Jeff Sessions Makes a Yuuggee Mistake

Timothy Birdnow

Over at American Thinker J. Marsolo argues quite convincingly that Jeff Sessions made a big mistake in recusing himself from any investigations over Russia. I concur; it was a serious, profound mistake and may wind up costing Sessions his job or at best make him an impotent AG.

Marsolo writes:

"As part of the Opposition Party's campaign, it is now a political crime for a member of the Trump administration to have spoken with anyone from the Russian government before the election, and there must be investigations.

First we had General Flynn. Now the Opposition Party is in full attack mode. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck "Lightweight" Schumer demand the resignation of Attorney General Sessions because he spoke with the Russian ambassador.

This had its intended effect. Sessions announced on March 3 that he will recuse himself from any investigation of Russian "interference" in our election.

Sessions should not have recused himself. He did nothing wrong. By recusing himself, he adds credibility to the baseless charges. He spoke with the Russian ambassador? Big deal. He did not sell uranium to Russia. He did not run guns to Mexico as Eric Holder did in Fast and Furious. He did not meet, as Loretta Lynch did, with Bill Clinton the day before the FBI questioned Hillary, not under oath, and then the FBI gave Hillary a pass.

End excerpt.

No he should not have. There are multiple reasons; first, there is no crime here and there is no conflict of interest so Sessions had no reason to do this. The reality is such a recusal makes Sessions LOOK guilty; this is the old "have you stopped beating your wife" routine and Sessions just said "why yes I have". Don't think for a minute that this recusal won't be used against him and other Trump people now that it's on record.

Second, it must be understood what the Democrats and media hope to achieve here. In general they want an atmosphere of corruption, to make it look like Trump has been in bed with the Russians all along and to alter the history books so that it becomes an established fact that the Russians stole the election for him. This is the Big Lie spoken of by Joseph Goebbles; tell a big enough lie and nobody will disbelieve it. In the end it beccomes the truth as far as many are concerned. So Trump becomes an illigitimate President. But they can't get Trump himself on this (not for lack of trying) so they are going to pick away at his people. Sessions is perhaps the most important of them all, because he has the power to dig into the corruption that has infected the Democratic Party and they full well know it. Why do you think Trump dropped the business about prosecuting Hillary after the election? Because he knew this wass what would happen, and he hoped to get Sessions in securely enough. The Attorney General is the one who will conduct investigations, investigations of the Clinton Foundation, of vote fraud, of collusion between the Clinton camp and the DNC and the media. Sessions is the guy who can get the truth on some of the more annoying Republicans too, like John McCain or any of the NeverTrumpers who actively worked with the Democrats to fix the election. The Democratic Party has been a criminal. enterprise for some time now, cheating at will, and a strong, active AG could bring their political empire crashing down. There really is no choice; they must either remove Sessions and replace him with a more pliant guy or neuter him with fake scandal.

As Senator Palpatine said in Star Wars; the Phantom Menace "he is mired by baseless accusation of scandal". Now, so many of the Democrats and media types saw that movie...

Sessions must be mired by such accusations. They know that.

Which is why Sessions should not have given them the time of day here, and certainly should not have made this pledge. It makes him look guilty. It also chums the water, attracting the school of sharks, who see Sessions as vulnerable. This was why Trump should never have asked for Michael Flynn's resignation; you give these people a crack and they will push it open, like a weed.

Yesterday I heard Mark Davis, sitting in for Dennis Praeger on his radio show, sneer at a caller who suggested we launch counter-investigations. The caller suggested we bring back the Hillary e-mails, or dig up some new dirt, and Davis mocked the idea, saying it was old news and stupid. "we need to be doing exactly what we are doing" Davis admonished. Davis is profoundly wrong; this is the traditional way Republicans handled these kinds of attacks, and they are why the GOP has failed so miserably to advance any sort of agenda over the decades. The caller was absolutely correct; the best defense is a strong offense. You change the subject when you attack, and the Democrats and media then are forced to defend. It really is simple; any football fan knows the fastest way to lose a game is to go into the prevent defense. That's exactly what happened in the last Super Bowl where the Atlanta Falcons had what should have been an insurmountable lead but lost the game after wasting a half trying to protect that lead rather than increase it. Or, as George Patton once said, fixed fortifications are a monument to Man's stupidity, meaning if all you do is defend you will be destroyed.

Trump never fought that way; he always counter-attacked. Yet so many - even on our own side - keep pushing the ridiculous notion that Trump should tone it down, should quit counterpunching. I hate to remind everyone but Trump won both in the primaries and the general election by punching back. If he starts listening to the conventional wisdom he will be George W. Bushed. This imbecilic advice has never worked, yet the GOP seems incapable of learning that fact. The Democrats never do what the GOP advises sTrump or others to do; why should anyone listen to the perennial losers?

But it appears Trump's ear is being bent here, and he's making the unfortunate mistake of giving an inch.

I fear Trump is used to real negotiations where there is a give and take. He doesn't understand that the Left, the Democrats, and the media don't think they have to give. Any concession is viewed as weakness.

Sadly, Jeff Sessions just stepped into the quicksand. They laid a trap for him and now he is ensnared. If he does get out he will have to be a good little boy or face renewed wrath. It's how the Democrats have done things for decades.

Anyone remember the attacks on Reagan's people? James Watts, for instance, was forced out for absolutely no good reason; he used some not politically correct terms when describing a committee ("we have a jew, a woman, a black, and a cripple") and was forced out. This is an old tactic the Democrats have used. It should never be allowed; a firewall is needed to block the attacks. Like a classic crust defense, the line will be overrun if one break occurs. Our side simply must get that through their thick skulls.
