Dr. Spencer would know if the Chinese balloon was for studying the weather or not.
Roy W. Spencer:
The Chinese reconnaissance balloon: Obviously not for weather, way too big (expensive) and of little to no practical use for meteorology.
It's in the lower stratosphere, where the steering currents can be quite different than in the jet stream (much slower windspeed, although the direction this time of year might be generally the same).
The fact it crossed through Alaska, Montana, and now into the Ohio Valley toward the East Coast suggests its launch and altitude placement was carefully planned.
My first guess is that this is a "trial balloon" to (1) see how America reacts, and to (2) test their skill at being able to carry a payload in a desired direction. I have no idea what kind of future payload they are considering.

Now, if you asked me to toss out our current president, I'd say "Yep, Boy howdy! In a New York Minute!"

Bear in mind we don't know what those balloons were doing. They could get basic spy information from satellites. These balloons were perhaps doing something else - maybe something very serious. If nothing else they could be platforms for launching drones. And maybe they contain biological weapons?
Any way you slice it this was a provocation and intended to test American resolve. We failed.

They are welcome to Biden. I'd send him gift-wrapped if they asked.

As you say, they blotted out the sun during the Trump years.
