Israel has rejecte the peace deal put forward by Trump's "Board of Peace" since it would leave Hamas with their weapons but require Israel to withdraw from Gaza.
I don't blame him; it's just another deal that is dependent on Hamas following through when they have no intention of doing so.
This is the same old saw we've seen repeatedly - a deal where Israel gives up land for the promise of peace.

You have to wonder if Trump's kidding? Surely he knows better than to trust Hamas, even with a burnt-out match?

I suspect Trump is playing for time. He wants Hamas to make a deal just to quiet things down there so he can finish the job on Iran. With Iran gone Hamas and Hezbollah both will be defunded and eventually strangled. Right now Trump doesn't want to anger the Arab nations, the coalition he's in the process of building against Iran. He wants Saudi Arabia and others in the Abraham Accords. I think he believes he can achieve all this diplomatically but he needs quiet at the moment to do it. Certainly he has to know people like Tony Blair will give away the whole of Israel as part of the "peace process"! I don't think he'll let it happen, but I think he'll let Hamas THINK it will happen so they cool it for a time.
That at least is what I suspect.
