Is China Capitalist? No it is not.
I am always having this argument with people, particularly Millenials. Corporatism, the fundamental economic system we now have and the one also imposed by the Nazis and Fascissts, is not capitalist. It is neo-socialistic, where government does not own the means of production outright but has control over them nonetheless. China is closer to the Nazi way than are we, but are not capitalist. There are corporations owned in total or in part by the Communist Party. These aren't private companies; they are public charges masquerading as private companies. "Capitalism" is an economy where the entire market is privately owned and run as the owners see fit and the market asks. America has not been a capitalist society for some time now.
I am forever arguing with (usually young) boobs who sneer at Capitalism as explotative, yet they have no idea of what it is. The Left dismantled Capitalism some time ago, interjecting government power "a guided economy" as they called it. That is a Fascist economy. Fascism and Nazism are socialist.
Capitalism is natural, not an "ism" at all. It is what people would do if left to their own devices. Socialism is an artificial construct requiring a powerful state entity to set the terms, to own the mechanisms of economic activity, to regulate and mandate. It uses the power of the sword to compel behavior. Capitalism does nothing but offer what people want.
A fascistic corporatism is Fabian Socialism, a creeping socialism that ends (and is intended to end) in true socialism aka the ownership of the means of production by the state.
The word Capitalism was never used by Adam Smith (who elucidated free markets, did not invent the idea). It was a term that came into usage in the mid-to-late 19th century, largely at the behest of the socialists/marxists who wanted to create the notion of parity between their totalitarian system and free exchange of goods and services.
We've let them get away with subtly creating a pejorative term then sneering at the whole idea of people exchanging voluntarily.
China is a Communist country which takes in some private investors into their businesses. That is not "capitalism."
And given the fact we now know that Twitter was in bed with the FBI and the like we can confidently say the U.S. isn't capitalistic either. A free market isn't run by government executives as was Twitter.
The difference between modern "capitalists" and communists is a bigger paycheck, to quote Chesterton. (Chesterton advocated what he called "Distributism" which was basically small c capitalism.)
