This is sad; the end of an era, but it was inevitable.
It will save the country a lot of money. It actually costs the mint more money to make a penny than it is worth.
But it is a sign of the times; our currency is so devalued a penny is completely worthless and nobody wants them anymore. There was a time you could buy stuff with a penny - penny candy, for instance. And you could put them in shoes...
I am mindful of the old English song we used to sing when I was a boy:
Christmas is coming the goose is getting fat
won't you please put a penny in the old man's hat
if you haven't got a penny a ha'penny will do
if you haven't got a ha'penny then God bless you!

Hate to gig you on your meter, but you've screwed up the second line, which doesn't properly "scan". It's "Please to put a penny in an old man's hat."
You'll find it sings much better, as it's almost straight iambic.
And talking about things costing more these days, a lower-middle-class family like my wife and myself can no longer afford a goose for Christmas these days, though perhaps with luck Mr. Trump may have such a salutory effect on prices as to make such things possible again by next December.

Dana, I copied and pasted it from a site I found with a Google search since I couldn't remember exactly how it went. But of course you can't rely on what you find online.
I love goose but we haven't bought it in years. Last time we priced one it was over a hundred bucks!!!!
Part of the reason why is the U.S. government protects geese and made it illegalto use goose down for any products. Time was the down was a major profit producer for people who raised geese for a slaughter market - now they don't make anything off it. You can't sell a bird for that much; even rich people won't buy it.
That was Obama who did that.
I still can afford duck, though it's very expensive too; you can get a ribeye steak for less.

I can't swear to this, it's just my impression, but around here I think duck is actually affordable if you buy it "off-season." During the holidays it's pretty pricey but other times I think I can get one for maybe $35 or $40. That's high but not impossible.
It seems like only about ten years or so ago, you didn't have to rob Ft. Knox to buy a goose. Now, you have to traffick your nanny...

Yeah; it's a shame. BTW duck eggs are supposed to be good and could substitute for chicken eggs right now but there never was enough of a duck market, alas.
