Holding Our Children Hostage

Timothy Birdnow

My cousin Ellen observes:

Gregg and I would thankfully be able to make this work and still keep our jobs (not very well, and some of our kids would probably need tutors in the future to catch up), but this is a real problem for probably the majority of families with 2 working parents (and an absolute untenable nightmare for single parents!). However, if we bring it up it means we think schools are babysitters and we want teachers to die!

In the Covid 19 World You Can Have a Kid or a Job; You Can't Have Both

I add:

So the New York Times wants parents to have kids and live off government's beneficience. Just vote for the Democrats and they will take care of you! BTW Teachers may not like this but they ARE babysitters and have been for a long time. They do more than that, of course, but it certainly is one role they play!

1 "Two working parents." Haha. Good one. Most families are lucky to have one working parent.

2 Bill, Ellen was saying for families with two working parents, not saying most families are two working parents. And she lives in a solidly middle class exurb, so probably a lot of her neighbors and friends ARE.

3 You are living on a different planet. Two parents with two jobs, and neither one of them has been laid off? This is a condition for a LOT of her neighbors? Somebody is out of touch with reality.

4 Oh come on Bill; the economy is reopening and a lot of people are going back to work. And what of the people who were in jobs deemed vital? I have a friend who is a surgical nurse, and so is his wife; they never got laid off (well, briefly at first when surgeries were stopped). At any rate, there certainly ARE families with two working parents who will be hard pressed with this.

Not that it isn't necessarily a good thing; I am all for getting kids out of the clutches of the government and the Bolshevik teacher's unions. But Ellen has a solid point.
