In 2014, Tea Party candidate Matt Bevin challenged Mitch McConnell’s senate seat in the Kentucky Republican primary. In answer to this challenge, McConnell vowed to "crush” the Tea Party in general. A falsely-named PAC, Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, consisting primarily of donors to Karl Rove’s American Crossroads, sprang up to support McConnell’s Tea Party-crushing efforts. Among the group’s major donations was Donald Trump’s $50,000.

During the final months of the primary campaign, Trump also donated a further $10,000 directly to McConnell’s campaign fund, and publicly endorsed McConnell for Senate majority leader. During the 2016 presidential primaries, Trump built his character assassination campaign against Ted Cruz on a foundation of attacking "Lyin’ Ted” for disrespecting his Senate leader, McConnell. After being elected President of the United States, one of Trump’s first cabinet appointments was McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao — who also happened to be a member of the board of directors at Fox News during the campaign, when Fox became the propaganda center of Trump’s presidential bid. (Remember how Mark Levin, before he sold his soul for cash and fame, used to refer to the "pom-poms” in the conservative media who supported Trump. He was referring to Fox News, which, as we now know, was directly pressured by Mitch McConnell’s wife to slant its commentary against Cruz and in favor of Trump.)

Well, here we are in 2018. Donald Trump repeatedly says he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and that this amendment will "never be repealed.” And yet he just proved how meaningless that statement is by ordering a ban on the sale of bump stocks, one of the broadest assaults on the Second Amendment since the machine gun ban. (And Trump used the illegality of the machine gun as his justification for banning bump stocks, a perfect example of the progressive authoritarian ratchet in motion.)

Donald Trump, hot air aside, is a major threat to the right to bear arms, because he neither believes in it nor has the vaguest idea what it is about. In this area, like most others, he is doing the bidding of his puppet-masters in the progressive GOP establishment, headed by Mitch McConnell.

Meanwhile, the man Trump helped to defeat in 2014 is giving Americans a tasteof the kind of conservative leadership the GOP could have had by now, had McConnell, Rove, Trump, and the rest of the progressive establishment not banded together to crush the Tea Party and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

My favorite part is Bevin’s extremely well-articulated case regarding the desensitizing influence of violent video games and pornography on the minds of today’s youth. This is especially important today, in the age of Trump, when so many conservatives in the wake of the Parkland shooting have been out front in demonstrating their stupidity by citing "research” and "studies” which allegedly prove that there is no connection between such ubiquitous cultural crassness and youth crime and behavior. What those Trumpservatives are essentially saying, although they don’t understand their own meaning, is that moral education does not exist. (I’ll have more to say about this issue in the near future.)

Bevin represents the opposite, genuinely conservative and common sensical position that yes, moral education really exists, it consists of much more than abstract rules for behavior, and if it is done poorly — that is, if the moral influences in the minds of young people are calibrated to establish habits of disrespect for the sanctity of human life, and to put a premium on viewing other people’s lives as nothing but sources of your own tawdry amusement or grim satisfaction — then bad psychological and social results are sure to follow.

Congratulations, Governor Bevin, most of all for adding to the time capsule that future earthlings will need to refer to as they seek evidence of what America once was, what it might have been, and how it was destroyed.
