I'm not quite sure why there is such strong resistance to the most obvious explanation. That ancient stone columns and walls were primarily used to support ancient wooden roofs. Roofs which have long since perished.
Why all of this crazy speculation? We know that neolithic people built roundhouses. Why would they not also build round temples with stone supports instead of wooden supports for the walls? But wooden roofs, just the same.
