Trump's idea of the U.S. buying Greenland is back.
You may remember, the President suggested we might want to buy the giant frozen island and was sneered at by the media, who cannot fathom the concept of America actually growing and moving ahead. Well,Trump is renewing his call for an American Greenland!
A couple of points on this:
It'sa big, frozen chunk of nothing and offers little in the way of benefit to the U.S. now, but...
I have read rumors that Greenland may be sitting on oil. Black gold.Texas tea. And while Denmark may own the island (called Kalaallit Nunaat by natives) it has done little to develop it. With American know-how we could have an oil boom there that would make the eskimoes who live there rich.
Also,America already has a military base in Greenland, notably at Thule in the very north which has been renamed Pituffic, the Space Force base in the wilds of the north shore. We could theoretically lose that bases at any time if Denmark should so decide. Given the importance of the Arctic for missile launches if the Big One ever hits Greenland would be a very important platform for our national defense.
Also, IF YOU BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING and think we'll have an "ice free Arctic" as so many do (they've been predicting that for decades and it will happen any day now...) then the Northwest Passage would be under American control and not Danish (who cannot control it given they have just 20 ships in their navy, compared to the U.S. which possesses 280. Denmark can only hold Greenland with American help if attacked.
But what I like most about this proposal is that it is forward-thinking, dreaming big, believing America can still grow and do great things. This is at odds with the prevailing liberal view that our last days are behind us and we should learn to manage our decline. This is the spirit that built America.
But the question is, how much will it cost; we are flat broke, having squandered our money on studies of bait fish and gay dating practices in Argentina and a host of other useless things.
But at least when you buy land you buy something real, tangible, and it won't go away. It may be taken from you but it doesn't just disappear. And you never know what will turn up on that land.
The American Left always wants to "Go Green". I say "Go Greenland!"
