Free the Captives?

Ellen Toever

From Avi Abelow from #ISRAEL:
"In 2011, there was a tremendous pr campaign in Israel to pressure Netanyahu to release over 1,000 Hamas terrorists in order to free captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Netanyahu was at first against the deal, as was half of the country, including myself, because we understood that in exchange for freeing one life, the deal would be lead to the deaths of many more innocent Jews in Israel.

Unfortunately, we were proven correct.

An organization called Torat Lechima recently put together the most accurate statistics regarding the impact of that Shalit deal.

In the Shalit deal, 1,027 terrorists were released. 500 innocent Jews were murdered by some of those released terrorists before Simchat Torah, Oct. 7th, 2023. And some of them returned to senior positions in Hamas, like Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza responsible for the Oct. 7th massacre.

That means, over 1,700 innocent lives were lost because of a massive pr campaign to save Gilad Shalit, which impacted Netanyahu to change his mind and agree to the horrible deal, a deal that the media today blames on Netanyahu, forgetting how they were an active part of the of campaign to pressure Netanyahu to change his mind and agree to the deal.

Today, we are faced with the same dilemma.

Is releasing terrorists who will return to return the right thing to do to save some lives, when it means many more people will be killed as a result.

This is not a simple issue and it becomes even more complex when the Torah actually says that if paying a ransom to free captives, endangers more people to be potentially kidnapped, then the ransom should not be paid to free the captives.

While the commandment of freeing captives is one of the most important, it is not a zero-sum situation.

The only solution to this situation would be killing all the release terrorists in Gaza after releasing them from prison. However, based on my knowledge of the leadership we have today, they, unfortunately, wouldn’t do that."
