Did Coffee Give Us America?

Timothy Birdnow

Just a thought:

Perhaps that was the genesis of the Enlightenment, as for the first time in ages the more thoughtful people were actually sober enough to engage in a logical, clear-minded way? People used to be drunk all day in the good old days because their water was so bad.

In 17th and 18th century England, coffeehouses were popular places for people from all walks of life to go and meet, chat, gossip and have fun, whilst enjoying the latest fashion, a drink newly arrived in Europe from Turkey – coffee.

Whilst the taste of 17th century coffee was not very palatable – indeed, it tasted quite disgusting according to accounts of the time – the caffeine in it and the ‘buzz’ it provided, proved quite addictive.

The first coffeehouse in England was opened in Oxford in 1652. In London, the first one was opened later that same year in at St Michael’s Alley, Cornhill, by an eccentric Greek named Pasqua Roseé. Soon they were commonplace.

And while the American Revolution was fomented in no small part in taverns, one wonders if the rise of coffee and tea drinking didn't free up the minds of the patriots so they could actually think about their plight and work out a philosophical approach and tactics.

Remember, the Irish had fought the British for a long time without much success. Was that perhaps because (at least to a degree) they were all emotion and no reason in their fight? And if so was it perhaps not a function of too much liquor making them passionate but not reasonable?

So it could well be coffee changed the world and gave us America.

2 Well, coffee gives ME life, once my wife gets the French roast bubbling in the coffee maker in the morning. She can't drink it because caffeine is a no-no for her, but she's happy to make it for me, wonderful wife that she is!

3 She's a better spouse than I; Cathy loves coffee and makes terrible brew and wants me to make it for her every day. I'm like Martha; not supposed to drink it, at least much. But I do anyway and sometimes pay for the privilege. (It causes what I call "coffee flu" leading to breathing problems and chills and a general malaise).

I only make it if I'm going to have some though; can't make it and not drink it!

I make damned good coffee, by the way. When I worked the graveyard shift at a grocery store the truck drivers all lined up for a fresh pot made by me. They would ask when I was going to be out so they could get coffee elsewhere on those days.  I remember all of them raving about it.

And thus ends a shameless bragging session!
