Did a New Chinese Weapon Take U.S. Intel by Surprise?

"We have no idea how they did this.” It’s not comforting that the preceding was uttered by a U.S. source in reference to an alleged new Chinese weapon: a hypersonic missile. But Beijing now claims it didn’t develop anything unusual, stating that what we detected circling the Earth this summer was a spacecraft.

1 That's what China says, eh? Believe that, and I've got an outdated can of Chow Mein noodles I'll sell you really cheap.

2 La Choy makes Chinese swing American.

No bet; I don't need stale chow mein noodles. And I won't win it anyway.

Probably a nuclear launch platform.

4 Yep, for sure.

Ate a lot of La Choy when I was a kid -- the whole family loved it.

5 We had it a few times growing up, but we were spoiled; had the very best Chinese food at a hole-in-the-wall place near our home. It was hot in there and you stood in a little line to get the food and they barely spoke English and it was the best EVER. I sorely miss that.

6 I grew up in a small town and the only restaurants were "normal" American food, with Italian mixed in. In those days there was no such thing as take-out.

When Martha and I lived back East, a friend took us to a Chinese restaurant in Eastchester, and it became a favorite of ours. The owner remembered you after you'd been there once, and he'd remember what you'd ordered. We'd go there, and he'd say "Do you want menus, or do you want me to fix something for you?" The smart person took the second choice, and it was always wonderful, and always different from what he'd ever served you before. We even went there occasionally for Dim Sum on a Sunday morning.

7 I'm surprised you didn't have a Chinese restaurant though; almost every small town has at least one these days, and they used to be ubiquitous as far back as the nineteenth century.

Often they were the ONLY game in town.

I remember when McDonalds first came to St. Louis. It was just carry out and it was terrible; greasy and unappetizing. We never wanted it. But once they came others began coming and voila!

They were across the street from the North Drive In, which my parents sometimes took us to. I sure do miss the drive-in.
