Death by Affluenza
Timothy Birdnow
I was thinking about the rising tide of Marxism around the world and it's a strange thing; we live in an era of prosperity undreamed of by our ancestors. We live in a material paradise, with fabulous wealth. We just throw things away when we get tired of them, not when they get worn out. We have iPhones and are simply dazzled by instant communication and the internet at our fingertips, with the average phone having more computing power than the one that ran the Moon landing in 1969. Everyone has air conditioning. Most families have two, three cars. Most have three television sets or more. We live healthy, long lives, far longer and healthier than our great grandparents. Our televisions have hundreds of channels, not the three we had when I was a kid, and they come in crystal clear, not all fuzzy and wavy. We have gourmet instant food; frozen or pre-mixed and all you have to do is pop it in the microwave for a few minutes. No more laborious hand cooking over a fire as in the old days! Kids no longer have cavities, and when their teeth come in crooked they don't need those old giant retainers that came out of their mouths and went around their heads. Everything is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We've cured diseases at an astonishing rate; no more diphtheria, or cholera, or smallpox.
People bathe daily and wash their clothes most days so they never have to wear dirty underwear or whatnot.
We are rarely cold, rarely hot, rarely sick, rarely stranded. Our lives are better now than kings of just a century ago.
And yet so many of us are bitching. Communism and socialism is on the rise, despite the fact we waged a war on Communism for over fifty years. Yet people - especially young people - are more discontent than ever, especially at the capitalist system.
It was the capitalist system that gave us this material paradise we now have.
This enormous cornucopia of wealth was born from the free market, from people starting companies, inventing new and better products, from people coming up with better systems to produce stuff, and ultimately from better service.
Take Amazon. It started life as an online bookseller; Jeff Bezos had some books he wanted to be rid of so he sold them online, and realized there was a real market for online sales. By working out a system that gave excellent customer service and fast delivery Bezos was able to create a world-girdling empire, and pretty much put Sears Roebuck out of business.
That has been repeated over and over in the last century, and our technology keeps getting better and better.
Yet here we have these ungrateful snots going online to complain about free enterprise on the smartphones they purchased with the money they did not earn by not working.
It's an amazing spectacle to watch.
Go to any Antifa protest and you see these young fools dressed in brand new clothes as they protest the very system that made it possible for them to have brand new protest clothes. If they lived in the old Soviet Union they would have been wearing rags - and that is assuming they would be protesting at all. More likely they would disappear and never be heard from again.
So we have this amazing situation where ungrateful people think they have it so bad when in fact they are living better than Caesar.
But they aren't living like gods, which is why they are angry. They look around and see the uber-rich with private jets and mansions (as opposed to their own 3000 square foot home) and are consumed by jealousy, coveting what their neighbor possesses. Well, it's not so easy to be a billionaire; you work all the time, you have people trying to slice your throat, you have women marry you for your money then tear your heart out, etc. It is a gladiator's arena. One of the few good things about it is you have money to own things and do things. But few people are willing to earn it that way. They want it given to them.
And they don't want to work. I remember when I was a teenager I didn't want to work either (and I had some pretty bad jobs) but I most definitely DID want the money I made. Kids these days want to skip the work and just take the earnings. They have been so entitled that they think it is owed them just for their existing. They figure their parents brought them into this world and so owe them.
It's a very curious role reversal; instead of being grateful their parents had enough love to conceive them and birth them and raise them and love them they figure their parents did it solely out for self-fulfillment and so the parents owe them big time. That's why they won't move out of their parent's homes; why should they?
And it is why they are all on-board with Marxism and Socialism. They want to live without being productive. They think the world owes them. And they are used to being given participation trophies and not being forced to actually face the real world.
I remember back in the eighties when the big "self esteem" juggernaut began rolling. We were told the problems in society stemmed from too much low self-esteem. Well, kids SHOULD lack self-esteem, or more precisely arrogance, because by and large they have nothing to contribute. They are in the learning phase of their lives and they have nothing to add to any conversation. Their thoughts are meaningless. We encourage them to speak them but that is to teach them to express their thoughts and to organize them and to learn to THINK. But until someone gets a bit of experience under their belts their thoughts are pretty worthless.
Not always of course; the inventor of the television was a 13 year old boy who entered his idea in a science fair. Philo Farnsworth was a kid from Washington State, and his teachers didn't know what he was talking about but one of them thought it might be important so he got some professors from the University of Washington to come and they were stunned - it could work. It did.
But that was rare; most times young skulls are full of mush, as Rush Limbaugh used to say.
But we began inflating their egos until they are now as tall as skyscrapers, and while they live better than kings and emperors they are still unhappy.
Part of that is the fact that their parents have been seduced by all the wealth, by the success, by the amazing things in our society. Wealth and success often breeds dissatisfaction, and God Himself told warned the Israelites they were coming into a very dangerous situation as they were entering the Holy Land because they were soon going to have easy, wealthy, successful lives and in the process would forget Him and become dissatisfied. It's why there was not one but TWO Commandments against coveting; human beings covet that which they do not have but others possess. Our young people, boated with false self-confidence, covet that which they have not earned and do not possess (and in the end may well not want).
I remember some years ago the phrase "affluenza" was coined. It was about the entitled rich kids, but it fits most young people these days, and many not so you. Our whole society suffers from affluenza and it only gets worse the more wealth and technology we create. As things get better and better so many of our people become more and more disaffected.
Why? Ultimately because we have become grown children, playing with toys, while eschewing the permanent things, the eternal things. We no longer believe in God and most especially we no longer believe in a God who will eventually impose justice. We believe in a sappy happy God who would never harm a fly even if the fly was biting Him, and who is all giving. But if that were true why is life so hard in so many ways? Why is there death, grief, loss, heartbreak, disappointment, etc.? No, God has two aspects and one is the Great Judge. And life is about more than pleasure and enjoyment.
An of course many don't believe in God at all and think we just spontaneously generated out of nothing. As a result the philosophy is the same as the Satanists have long advocated "Harm no one, thy will be done". But of course you WILL harm people if your will is the whole of the law; it is unavoidable. We do not live in a vacuum. A man on a deserted island might be able to live as his will demands but in a society that leads to strife and hatred and struggle.
But that is exactly what we started doing in the past with the Me Generation and the rise of anti-natural law ideas like feminism or the sexual revolution. We are in the post-revolution period now and the damage to society, to family, to children, to our system of things like our social clubs or schools or whatnot, has been done. The young in particular feel alienated - something all youths feel at some point (teen angst) but it is far worse for them now as they no longer have the bedrock under their feet. They've been told they have to figure it all out on their own. Then along comes some radical teacher, or a Facebook page, or something else, that offers a false religion to them. They snatch it up, as a drowning man snatches a life preserver.
So now the most evil idea ever conceived is rising again and everyone is puzzled by this. It was inevitable. We've been driving the wrong way down the interstate; eventually we were going to crash.
The only way we can alter this trajectory, to avoid making the mistake Russia made, is to restore Christianity and our national roots. People have to stop substituting physical wealth for proper social upbringing, for love. If a woman can stay home with her kids she should do so and the family should do without the toys. The family is, after all, the primary building block of society and a strong family won't see their kids succumb to the temptation of a free and easy existence and punishing those who produce the wealth. If that means denying kids the smartphones or the other gadgetry so be it; the kids are better off reading a book or playing outside anyway.
We have made a false god out of our wealth, just as the Israelites did. God sent the Israelites in exile twice, and He owed them a debt based on His promise. He has made no similar promise to us. When our time comes we may just disappear, as did Esau's children, the Edomites.
Charlie Kirk knew how to reach the young, and he was very effective at it, which is why the leftists murdered him. He was showing us the way home.
We need to listen.
