This is how feudalism was born. The rich had private security and could protect the peasantry - for a price. That price was their freedom and their livelihoods. But if you are imperiled by Vikings or other crazed barbarians, what will you do?

I cannot imagine how it is that state is so liberal. Given the people who settled there, one would think rugged individualism would rule the day, but it's collectivist. I notice many of the cold northern tier states tend that way. Is it the Norse heritage? The descendants of Vikings are very collectivist these days.

If we could "depopulate" Minneapolis, St. Paul and maybe Duluth, we'd be as red a state as Florida. But it's like New York State -- the city's so large it skews the vote.

Like Illinois too. Illinois is, well, purple outside of Chicago. But it is solidly blue thanks to the behemoth in the north. It's why there was a discussion about kicking Chicago out of the state.
