1 The trick is for strikers to not care about the law. In the early 1960s I was in a union that struck a steel company. They said we could not block the gate. We blocked the gate. They sent police, with guns, who threatened to shoot us. We said, "Go ahead. There's more of us than there are of you. You'll get some of us, but we'll get all of you." They left, and said the steel company was on its own.

I remember when St. Louis Beer and Wine went on strike. A replacement driver came into the store I managed. He was ashen. He took me outside to look at his truck; the windshield had a starburst shatter, the result of someone firing a shotgun at him. I don't know if he quit at the end of the day or not but wouldn't have been surprised.
