Coming Soon to America

Down Under James Doogue, responding to my post about credit card companies tracking gun and ammo purchases:

The card providers already know where we spend our money and largely what we spend it on.

In Australia we have to have a firearms licence which requires the passing of a multiple choice exam, a pretty thorough police background check, and provision of photographic evidence that you have a correctly installed firearms and ammunition safe. The ammunition must be locked away separately from the firearms. Every firearm must be registered and shown on your firearms licence. You can only be licenced if you have a reasonable use for the firearm. That can include say farming, sports or recreational shooting. If the latter, you must have suitable property, or have a letter from the property owners stating you have permission to shoot on their property. If for hunting, you must nominate what the target game is. They wouldn't for instance approve of you having a large calibre, long range rifle if you have a small property with only ducks and rabbits on it. Nor would they approve a small hand gun on a property where you were claiming kangaroos and wild pigs as the typical quarry.

We must present our firearms licence for any purchase of ammunition to ensure we are not purchasing ammunition which isn't used by one of our licenced firearms.

When not in use or being transported, your firearms are required to be stored in your nominated safe. Buying and selling firearms is another bureaucratic nightmare. Oh, and 'self defence,' is not an acceptable 'reasonable use,' for a firearm. We certainly couldn't have our firearms in the bedside cabinet, or under the bed to fend off a possible home invasion. Using a gun would be considered unreasonable force, unless you could convince a court or judge you felt your life was in immediate danger.

So having our purchases tracked by card providers is no big deal! 🫤
Mark McDougall kindly replies:

And these days, the most likely home invaders are the jackboots! Which is likely WHY they don't want guns to be accessible in time of need.

Tim replies:

Yikes! Those are some big hoops to jump through James. I remember when you guys had that one mass shooting and overreacted so horribly, imposing all this crap. This is why they were able to then impose the tolitarian lockdowns. If you all had your guns they might have thought twice about it. Guns keep the authorities honest, which is why they ALL want to take them away from the citizenry.

1 I don't believe the card companies are tracking firearms purchases. That new code that gun dealers have been given will only show up if somebody bought something in the store. It doesn't and can't differentiate between guns, ammo, bows and arrows, hunting togs or anything else sold in the store.

It's similar to the idea that the Feds would want to know what I buy in my liquor store to find out if I'm a drunk. A similar code would not differentiate between purchases of beer, wine, whisky, rum, or fancy wine glasses.

2 I'll take your word for that Dana.  You are the expert here on firearms.
