August of 1991 I worked at the US Embassy in Moscow. The Embassy was on the Inner Ring road and there was a coup happening in August of that year. There was a three day siege of the Russian Federation building just outside the back door of the Embassy. We were watching History, at the same time we were uncertain how things would shake out. The Yeltsin team with Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze were rallying the population to come defend the Russian White House. So 2 million Russian Patriots got drunk and began building a barricade around the Building. The Soviet Troops were running around town on high alert, but had no had orders to engage the crowds.
On the third night. There was three armored personnel carriers driving around the ring road heading away from the Embassy and nowhere near the Russian Federation Building.
These were young Soviet Soldiers, that were told to take their vehicles to Gorky Park to link up with the main group that was returning to their base outside Moscow.
These were conscript Army soldiers, 18-20 years old, forced into serve to the Soviet Government.
As they passed the Embassy and drove under the Kutuzovsky Prospekt bridge. A gang of drunken Patriots, used a city bus to block their advance.
When the soldiers tried to reverse directions, the gang of drunken Russians blocked to other end of the bridge and started pelting the vehicle with Molotov cocktails. Three innocent men died, because Chaos and corruption in high places drove men crazy.
