What is the DEAL with the media saying "Keev" and "Kharkeev"? It's fucking Kiev and KHARKOV—and has been, FOREVER! During WWII, there were three Battles of KHARKOV. Even Fox News and Ben Shapiro is spouting this nonsense. It's just pretentious and IGNORANT. We don't say "Moskva," "Roma," or "Pair-EE." We say Moscow, Rome, and Paris. We do NOT say "Chicken Keev." "Київ" is the Ukrainian spelling. Not the umlaut over the "I." That means that BOTH vowels (both are "e" sounds) are pronounced!

The Ruling Class has been doing that systematically with place names for decades. Remember Peking? Bombay? Calcutta? They changed that to make it "more accurate". But why? They want to erase the past, all of it, and replace it with a new world, a new way of speaking, of thinking, of acting. Erasing the past is the key to building their insane dystopic future. So Kiev becomes KEEV. Aregentinians become Argentynes. The list goes on and on. This is the linguistic equivalent of tearing down Civil War statues.

I heard on a reputable talk show some time ago that "Kiev" and "The Ukraine" are Russian terms, and the Ukrainians themselves say "Kyiv" and "Ukraine (without The)." If this is accurate, it would indicate that at least some of our media are trying to show solidarity with the Ukrainians.

Except Dana they are saying KEEV, not Kyev. I've seen it in cyrillic. The Ukrainians use the letter ye as do the Russians. In Ukrainian they use the E-kratkaya then the ye then the v. An e-kratkaya is a glottal stop sign, so it is a de-emphasized K sound but it is a k sound. The ye is a soft e. The Russians use the K and hard E then the ye. But NOBODY uses the K and hard E alone.
Some journalists may be trying to do this out of solidarity with the Ukrainians. I rather suspect it's coming from the AP stylebook. They set the tone for how journalists speak, and I am pretty sure they chose to change it.
I've been using Ukraine rather than The Ukraine since a knowledgeable friend on Facebook pointed out the Ukrainians themselves always say Ukraine (which is, after all, the way most countries are named and how the slavic people speak). As this fellow pointed out, the Russians added the "the" to emphasize it as a region of Russia, not a separate country.
Still, old habits die hard, and I resent changing the way I say it. But I'm willing to go there. I'm NOT willing to go to KEEV.
