From the CDC WTF department: The CDC now says that children in classrooms do not have to be 6 feet apart as they previously stated. "We don't really have the evidence that 6 feet is required in order to maintain low spread." They now claim that 3 feet apart is adequate. The new guidelines also remove requirements for plastic shields and other barriers between desks. "We don't have a lot of evidence of their effectiveness."

Of course this is after schools have already spent millions purchasing and installing distancing and shielding systems. But here is the kicker: They are still sticking with their guidelines about children remaining 6 feet apart while at recess. So, according to the CDC, if children are locked together in an enclosed classroom for hours at a time they only need to be 3 feet apart but while outdoors during their brief recess they should stay 6 feet apart.
