Average Global Surface temps

The global average surface temperature so far this month is averaging +0.59 deg. C above the 30-year mean, which is warm, but cooler than any of the previous 6 months. Note the beginnings of our (U.S.) cold wave, which usually begins in NW Canada. (CDAS data assimilation uses all weather data-- surface, weather balloon, commercial aircraft, satellites, etc. -- in a physically consistent way to estimate temperatures).

El Niño and La Niña are a coupled ocean atmosphere phenomena. The map above is surface air temperature. For example, El Niño moves heat from the ocean to the atmosphere which is why the global air temperature will go up with El Niño.
