In it's never ending quest to destroy itself, the National Football League is now partnering with colleges to "train" athletes not to push radical leftism.
From Campus Reform:
"The National Football League has partnered with Morehouse College to host a three-day workshop dedicated to teaching student athletes strategies for "effective advocacy.â€
The "Advocacy in Sport†workshop, which will be held in February, vows to teach students "how to develop and implement effective advocacy platforms that positively impact society.â€
"Linking with the NFL and their players in pushing forward social justice agendas that mirror present and past activist foundations of Morehouse College is important work."
The workshop comes on the heel of the NFL’s recent pledge to donate $89 million dollars to social justice causes over the next seven years, a commitment that notably came in light of the protests against racial injustice seen by NFL players like Colin Kaepernick and others."
End excerpt.
Support from the fans is dropping like Anthony Wiener's trousers when he is online, and yet they are still spending large amounts of money on open political advocacy, advocacy of issues antithetical to many of the blue collar customers of professional football. And this at the expense of real charity work, like funding cancer research.
Football players are supposed to be trained to, oh, I don't know, uh, PLAY FOOTBALL. Isn't that their primary purpose? If they want to become radical activists they have plentyof opportunity elsewhere. Colleges are crawling with Organizing for America types.
More from the article:
""This historic workshop is aimed at training the next generation of athletes who wish to use sport as a powerful platform for advocacy,†said Troy Vincent, the Executive Vice President of Football Operations at the NFL, in the NFL press release.
"Our partnership is designed to equip athletes as influencers and community leaders with the mechanics to develop their advocacy platform,†Vincent added."
End excerpt.
What is really going on here?
The NFL has been moving to the Left for some time, and social justice has been on it's mind. There are a number of reasons the owners are going along with this; they believe the claims that America's demographics are going to change and this country will be black/brown and so it behooves them to get in on the ground floor with their future fan base. See, old white dudes who are the current base are going to die out and if the league wants a future it had better appeal to the current minorities. Of course, this assumes all blacks and histpanics are radical leftists and that whites aren't going to be spending money after some "tipping point". I suppose it could happen that way, as it did in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe when Robert Mugabe nationalized all of the white farms and seized all the white assets, but is that going to happen here? Frankly, I don't really even believe America is going to flip as fast as it is being predicted.
And then there is the fear of the concussion collusion.
The NFL is terrified of where the Left is going to take the whole concussion issue, and they are trying to buy themselves out of trouble with the Left. They know they are in the crosshairs of the Progressives, and hope to sell their souls for another hour of breath. Bad idea. Anyone who has ever seen a bunch of birds circling knows there is a dead body somewhere, and the more you feed birds the more they will come. Give the Left what it wants and you can count on them doubling down. The only rational way to hold on is to fight.
Another thing might just be that too many of these owners and league execs really ARE liberals who believe this stuff. It shouldn't surprise us; you have to be very, very rich to own an NFL franchise. More than likely you, or your kids, attended an Ivy League re-education camp, and you swim in Progressive waters.
And so when a Colin Kaperneck starts the ball rolling you don't object, and when others naturally join in (naturally, because it means stealing some attention and air time at the expense of the others who just want to play football) you see an opportunity to show how benign and committed you are to social justice.
No doubt the NFL thinks the fans will return in time. This is a cyclical loss, they think, like during a recession. I don't believe it is.
It's high time someone started a new competitor to the NFL. The USFL was born before its time. Now it cold become something, what the NFL used to be.
Go for it!
