American Rome

In a discussion about illegal immigration on Facebook I left the following comment:
Illegal immigration destroyed the Roman Empire; are we somehow going to avoid that same fate?
If you compare Rome to the U.S. the paralell is striking. Rome
had massive illegal immigration and eventually the German invaders took
over. Rome had massive overspending and devalued their currency to the
point where money had little value. Rome saw the decline of the
traditional family structure due to loose sexual morality which made
the populace weak and pleasure-seekin
g.
Rome became more interested in pleasure and enjoyment and entertainment
than actually accomplishing any great tasks. Rome saw a huge rise in
the gap between rich and poor, and the middle class was squeezed thanks
to currency manipulation and crony capitalism. Rome saw a rise in
agnosticism which led to a devaluation in the traditions of the old
Republic. Rome developed a heavy welfare system (bread and circuses)
which made much of the poorer classes dependent. Rome saw the decline
in family farms, with rich guys buying up the land and kicking the
peasantry off, putting them on the dole. Eventually Rome couldn't bring
in enough tax money to pay for the welfare state and wound up making
people stay in the professions they were in - the institution of
serfdom. We haven't done that YET, but how long will it be before we
do? Any way you slice it America looks surprisingly like terminal stage
Rome and the Democrats and RINO Republicans are hell-bent on us
following the Empire into the dustbin of history.

I retorted:
John Wieners haven't you heard of the Germanic invasion? German tribes,
pushed by the Huns, peacefully (well mostly peacefully) immigrated
(without permission) into the Roman Empire. The Romans actually then
hired these people to act as border guards. The Germans came to Rome
because it was a good place to live; prosperous and secure But soon
they grew out of control, and the Vands - who had peacefully immigrated
into the Empire - sacked Rome itself in 455. In 476 Odoacer - a German
king - was proclaimed emperor in the West, thus demarcating the fall of
the Roman Empire. If you knew any history at all you would be aware of
that. The Vikings were not a major player in the Roman era; you are
confusing the late Roman era with the Middle Ages. The Norsemen began
emerging in the late eighth century.
I am astonished at the ignorance of most Americans about history, but especially of the Progressives, who know next to nothing about history, and how it impacts us today. Amazing! And it's amazing how they THINK they are well informed!
