Who Will Rule the Farmlands?

How "Green Energy" is wrecking the environment.
New York Governor Kathy "Hokum" Hockel is forcing giant solar farms on the residents or rural communities against their will, disrupting wildlife habitats and making prime farmland unusable for crops.
At some point there is going to be resistance, with vandalism striking these pyramids honoring the gods of green. I'm afraid we're going to see a "resistance movement" that makes it a point to wreck these things. We are going to turn good people into criminals, alas.
The Daily Caller dishes on the dimwittery:
New York is tearing up rural communities, wiping out wildlife sanctuaries, and burying prime agricultural soil under solar installation in the name of green energy. The root of this campaign is New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) of 2019, which demands that renewable sources supply 70% of the state’s electricity, that greenhouse gas emissions fall 40% below 1990 levels, and that the state build at least 3,000 megawatts of storage.
The footprint of the 18 solar power plants is staggering. The Cider Solar Farm in Genesee County will cover 4,000 acres, and the Ridge View Solar Farm in Niagara County will take another 2,000. Both were pushed through over the strong objections of the people who farm.
And the folks who will suffer from this have no voice, being drowned out by the liberals in NYC and Albany and other blue communities in the Empire State. It's just shoved down their throats.
The article continues:
Then came a rebuke from Washington. U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler jointly challenged New York’s approval of solar projects on productive farmland, criticizing the state for not applying federal standards in evaluating its farmland.
And here is the contradiction that should embarrass every official who signed off on the policy. Hochul announced a moratorium of up to a year on new data centers that draw more than 50 megawatts, which typically occupy 15 to 40 acres. Meanwhile, New York has already parked solar complexes on approximately 11,000 acres of federally certified prime farmland and wildlife habitats.
Centuries ago, South American civilizations offered land, crops, and sometimes human lives to appease gods they believed controlled the climate. New York has updated the ritual for a modern audience. It has built altars of solar farms and appointed a priesthood of bureaucrats who redact the evidence of their policies’ destruction.
Years ago there was a southern Missouri farmer who had his grain sequestered by the government. Eventually he just took some equipment to the silo and broke in and took all his grain out. It was bankrupting him. He became a hero to the people of Missouri and ran for Congress, coming close to winning (he was running against a long time Republican incumbent who was very popular and I'm glad he lost because he ran as a DEMOCRATS - spit!)
The farming community in New York may make a similar raid on these solar farms. Wayne Cryts broke into that silo (the grain elevator owners were in bankruptcy and "their" assets seized) forcibly and took what was his. How long before the farmers take back what is theirs in New York?
Could anyone blame them?
This is bigger than just some farmland in New York; it is a war being waged by the Demo-Left against the rural communities. Country folk have a culture that is different from the city, and is usually quite a bit more conservative. The Left hates that - they can't get control of people who are self-sufficient.
I would add Marx and Engels promoted the concept first; they understood the importance of controlling the farms and the people who can make do on the land. One of the things they promoted was blurring the distinction between city and countryside. They wanted the whole world to be a cityscape, with all it's problems and congestion, so they could control the whole country, not just the cities.
Mao won his revolution against the Nationalists in China because he ruled the countryside while the Quomintang ruled the cities. Guess who won? Mao could starve the enemy out, and attack from any direction. Chiang Kai-Shek could do nothing but huddle in his cities and wait for the attacks.
So control of the countryside is vital to final victory and the Left knows it. We own the countryside. This policy by Hochul is as much about destroying the powerbase of the opposition (us) as much as anything.

The Greens Have Fallen but They Will Rise Again

We seem to have won, or at least are winning with enough to have made this issue toxic to voters.
Another quote from the great General sums it up:
"It was close; but that's the way it is in war. You win or lose, live or die — and the difference is just an eyelash."
But I disagree with Tyler Durden in his claim the propaganda started with the Green New Deal back in 2919. On the contrary the propaganda started even before the creation of the IPCC, but metastasized with that corrupt and useless body in 1988.
I should know; I've been fighting with them long enough.
But it did get a huge push from the Green New Deal, no question.
So what was it that slaid the Sky Dragon? People all over knew it for the gaslighting it was, and had the facts to back it up. I still get into Facebook groups where the fighting is fast and furious and people on our side bring the data - and while there are some very good people arguing FOR global warming they are in a losing position and usually have to resort to mockery and sneers - because the facts are not with them.
Which is quite a feat as the information is very hard to find on a web search. Google and the other search engines censor it, and if you find what you want it's usually on page eight or ten. A web search will get you a lot of pages of the same thing - climate alarmism, and it's usually different sources putting up the same content from the same sources.
But the Truth will out, at least in this. The subject is becoming toxic.
Why? Well, the Left pushed too hard too fast.
Remember what was going on in 2019; the pandemic was breaking and the Expert Class was telling us to do all sorts of crazy things, like social distancing. They shut down churches but kept the bars open. They stopped baseball games but said you were safe if you went to a Black Lives Matter protest. They made everyone get the clot shot. Elderly died alone because they would not let the families see them.
I read an article in Psychology Today arguing the pandemic would restore trust in experts and institutions, a trust that had been waning since the days of Obama, certainly, and actually well before. People forget Ronald Reagan often railed against the liberal news media.
But the pandemic did the opposite; people could see for themselves how much they were being lied to, and why. It exposed the gaslighting. And they pushed climate change alarmism right alongside of the pandemic.
Suddenly the "crazy" skeptics didn't look so foolish. And when it became obvious we had arguments rooted deeply in science and not just politics or superstition it became even more obvious - especially since the media flatly refused to even have on "denier" scientists, some of the top people in the field. It was clear there was a propaganda war.
Well, they oversold their product and now they are in the political wilderness; climate alarmism is a toxin politically and they are running away from it. Rightly so; Americans care about other things than a miniscule rise in a trace gas that actually helps plants grow.
But that may change over time. This war is not won. Young children have been taught this from birth and the schools have brainwashed them into believing the world is going to end because of it, that they have no future. It's no doubt part of why young adults, the Gen. Z crowd, aren't marrying and having children - they see no point in it since we're all doomed anyway. (Oddly enough these same types reject the idea of settling on other planets like Mars as they say we'll just "dirty them up like we did the Earth" when there is nothing but rocks to dirty.)
These kids are the future and the Left knows they won their hearts and minds on this issue. They can wait.
And I won't be here forever. My war with Climate Kookery will end when I'm fertilizing the flowers, and most of those who are realists are a bit older and they will one day be gone. The only way we can save thd day permanently is by making sure our knowledge is passed on, and that grows difficult as the internet and other information sources are centralized. It's one of the reasons I hate data centers so much - it's part of the centralization of information.
Anyway we should enjoy our triumph while it lasts. We held back the tide, but tomorrow night it will ris again.

Funding Subverts Climate Science
This from Meteorologist Christ Martz:
Climate alarmists claim that it is a myth and/or conspiracy theory that scientists have to toe the mainstream narrative in order to get grant money from funding agencies like the NSF, get their research published in prestigious journals, and remain employed in academia.
But it’s not a myth; it’s a FACT.
The late Dr. William Gray was invited to a global warming meeting in Washington, D.C. by then-U.S. Vice President Al Gore in 1993. Gray told Gore that he’d attend, but he didn’t agree with Gore’s climate views, and soon after, Gray’s funding for climate research was cut.
Dr. Patrick Brown admitted that he and his coauthors left out "the full truth” in a paper on wildfires to get it published in Nature. That is, they knew the editors wanted a storyline that blamed climate warming for increased fire risk and not an examination of forest management and ignition sources.
I also personally know (and am friends with) two meteorologists who are university employees who cannot speak their minds on the issue because they’d be fired for openly expressing skepticism of the narrative of doom.
That’s why almost everyone who does speak freely on the skeptic side is older and/or retired.

Donkey Con: Democrats Give Trump Tariff Authority, Skulk Out of Town

Democrats, after railing against tariffs, quietly gave him the authority to impose them in return for hard sanctions against Russia. Apparently, since they believe tariffs are so bad for the American People, the Democrats care more about the Ukrainian People than they do their own American constituents.
In fact the Democrats know the tariffs are necessary and proper and in fact a tax increase - something long cherished by the party that never saw a dime they didn't want nine cents from. And they hate Russia for reasons that escape us as Putin is exactly the kind of guy they would love to see in power in the United States. I'm sure they would love for President Trump to be fed a polonium cocktail from Mr. Putin's private bar. So one wonders why they despise the Russkies so much.
Could it be they had a lot of skeletons to bury in the boneyards of Ukraine and Russia would out them? We know Hillary was up to her hairy armpits with the Ukrainians, and so was Slow Joe Biden's son, who got a high paying job on the board of a corporation where he did nothing and knew nothing about it. Oh, and the Ukrainians fired the prosecutor who was investigating old Hunter when Joe put out the call. Oh, and they tried to impeach Mr. Trump based on HIS phone call to the Ukrainians where he demanded an end to corruption there (a dog whistle, the Donks said). There is something involved in this the Democrats REALLY fear; such hatred is not born of rational distaste for what Russia did in invading. They have something to hide.
And the Russians are rejecting the whole New World Order scheme, something near and dear to the Progressive Socialists hearts. Not that what the Roooskies offer is any better, mind you, but it is more old fashioned - purely a "might makes right" sort of thing. I prefer that to the Internationalists sneaking around behind our backs and then inserting knives. The Russian way is at least honest enough to admit they want to stab us. The Klaus Schwab's of this world smile and shake our hands while plotting to betray us.
Anyway the Democrats cared more for their Ukrainians buddies than about protecting Americans from what they claim is a terrible injustice. Shows what hypocrites they truly are.

What's in a Name?

Lake America is the lamest name Trump could have chosen.
I get the Gulf of America, as America is not just the U.S. But Lake America breaks with the tradition of naming the Great Lakes after native American tribes.
He should have named it Lake Iroquois since they lived SOUTH of the lake in question.
Of course Lake Superior broke with that tradition, but it was too much trouble to say Gitche Gumee (as Longfellow called it.)
Other useful names would be Lake Niagara or Lake Rochester.
BTW I just e-mailed the White House about all this and within about two seconds got pinged with several text messages from the White House (you had to provide a lot of information to weed out the crazies, including your cell number). No direct response and I doubt I'll get one but it will be interesting to see if Trump seeks to rename the Canadian River any other name.
I included the Aviary address so maybe the White House will start reading this blog. I have said before Rush Limbaugh used to read it (if only occasionally) and I suspect a number of others did. We used to be linked up at Commentary Magazine, for instance, so people from there read the Aviary (no doubt thanks to Jack Kemp, who provided a great conservative Jewish perspective). So who knows? Maybe some underline at the White House will take a gander and perhaps we'll get a little attention for once. It gets lonely blogging into a roaring silence sometimes.

Maybe we should move some white supremacists serving lengthy sentences down to the prison with the offer of time off their sentences if they accept. And the guards should be a bit careless with metal implements, the kind guys like that find easy to sharpen. Mr. Muhammed should never leave this prison alive - ever.
He should never have been down at Club Gitmo to enjoy the lovely tropical weather and laze about all day in a hammock in the first place. It's ridiculous he's only facing trial now.
This prison should have been built in the far north, where these guys had to freeze their posteriors. Some island north of Alaska would have been nice. In the novel Logan's Run the society ran a maximum security "prison" in the deep Arctic, where the prisoners had to fend for themselves in caves they dug and ate what they could - including new arrivals. That should have been what we did with the 911 Terrorists.
And they should have had hard labor. We should have had them breaking rocks for the rest of their natural lives.
It is just this kind of softness on our part which makes us targets; the Muslims think we are a bunch of vaginas.

Fauci was trying to create bioweapons in violation of the laws on the books against that. And the CIA wanted Trump gone and were willing to break a few eggs to make an omelet...

The CIA had "robust” capabilities to detect and identify viruses but wanted to go further, the documents indicate. The project sought to do "forensic comparative analyses,” but the documents do not define this term. The work would study complete viruses rather than examining one gene at a time.
The CIA would help NIAID obtain the germs, the contract shows. Work produced under the collaboration would be considered sensitive, not classified, but the CIA must give permission before data were shared.

"Vice President Cheney assigned Fauci to head US biodefense research programs in 2002, including bioweapons-agents-development and bioweapons-agents-characterization research programs that approached, and arguably crossed, red lines set by the Biological Weapons Convention,” said Rutgers Chemistry Professor Richard Ebright, a longtime critic of NIAID’s pivot to this work, after reviewing documents shared by DCNF. "The documents show early steps in the process of transferring funding for, and direction of, CIA and DoD biodefense projects to Fauci’s agency, NIAID.”
While this was ostensibly to IDENTIFY bioweapons to do that they first had to create them. Fauci was funding the creation of bioweapons and we are supposed to believe it was just to study them. Ri-ight.
And they did this overseas because U.S. law specifically forbade it.
I hold a rather conspiratorial view on this. I believe they knew Covid 19 was no worse than a fairly nasty seasonal flu and that they figured it was worth doing to get rid of that SOB Donald J. Trump, who seemed unstoppable at the time this thing was released. Yes, it would kill off mostly old people (who tend to vote Republican) and that wasn't a bad thing since the Earth is overpopulated anyway and who would miss a few geezers who were about to kick the old bucket anyway? I think the CIA figures it was worth it.
And Trump's policies were killing China, who had every reason to use a bioweapon on us, particularly a low-yield bioweapon. Covid was the equivalent of a dirty bomb; it kills no more people than a regular one but might give you cancer down the road and more than that frightens the public into a mass panic.
I believe they wanted all this and wanted to implement the draconian policies they implemented with rather a ridiculous speed. They figured they could nail this whole thing down quickly and it would be the end of the American rebellion.
It backfired, as most of the CIA Wile E. Coyote schemes do. In fact it showed their hand.
I would add that we now know there were hundreds of such labs in Ukraine. Any wonder why there was such a huge push to support the Ukrainians in the war with Russia? As for Russia, I've not seen anything where the Russians have been speaking about that fact as a primary reason for their invasion of Ukraine but we certainly have not been given the Russian perspective on this and Putin may well have said this was a reason - repeatedly - but we wouldn't be told that, now would we? My Russian is too rusty for me to read Pravda and the other Russian newspapers these days, alas. My bad vision makes it problematic even if I had my old slovar (dictionary) handy.
(Speaking of such things, my old slovar came from the Soviet Union and it fell apart almost immediately when I used it. I glued the binding back on using an old sock as binder, soaking it with glue. I always had to be exquisitely careful turning the pages lest they tear. THAT, boys and girls, is what socialism gets you; books that fall apart when you open them.)
At any rate, I strongly suspect Russia knew what was going on in those labs and that was no small consideration in their decision to invade. Not the only one, maybe not even a major one. But if we had hundreds of biological weapons labs down along the Mexican border what would we do?
Fauci is basically a war criminal. The CIA was waging war against the American People and Anthony Fauci was their agent.
BTW I'm not at all surprised that RINO SOB Darth Dick Cheney was the guy who gave the go-ahead for this program. He's lucky he's dead; he could well wind up on charges for violating 18U.S. 175, which prohibits the creation of biological weapons.

Judge Rules in Favor of Trump's EO Denying Birthright Citizenship

Another win for the good guys!
FTA:
Trump later signed an order that narrowed the list of people who are eligible for birthright citizenship, including babies born to terrorists and children of foreign government employees.Immigrant advocacy groups, in a brief to Boardman, requested she block Trump’s new order and argued that it was "in defiance” of the Supreme Court’s ruling and is unconstitutional because the Trump administration lacks the power to take away citizenship that the Constitution confers.
Government lawyers said that the new order, unlike the previous one, "is not based on whether the mothers were unlawfully or temporarily present at the time of birth” but rather targets categories based on exceptions to the Constitution’s Citizenship Clause that justices outlined in their decision.
Sounds like a prudent and Constitutional decision to me. The Constitution expressly states that agents of foreign nations do not qualify for birthright citizenship.
It is axiomatically harder to get an appellate court to overturn a wrong legal decision than it is to get a district judge to rule in your favor right away, at least it is for someone who is arguing a conservative, Original Intent case. The courts are full of activists and even the good ones tend to lean left because the law schools and the lawyer's organizations are run by leftists. It's why a guy like Neil Gorsuch sometimes goes off the rails with his rulings; at heart he's a Constitutionalist but he forgets sometimes and writes to please his long-ago professors. At any rate that Trump won this makes it harder for the Left to overturn it, not easier. This is a big win.

The Uniting of the Sunni Arabs

He is right.
The goal of Western policy towards the Middle East was and should remain dividing the countries in the region. The British did that for a long time and it led to an era of relative stability and peace; the Islamic World are natural competitors as each sees it's version of Islam as the best and the one that should triumph. The British sowed the seeds of discord among the varying sheiks and Mullahs and whatnot to keep them splintered. This is the beginning of an alliance that could well cause us nothing but grief.
I would add the British nibbled on the edges of the Saudi peninsula but knew better than to put their troops in the heart of Arabia, something the U.S. has done. There is considerable anger at our presence on Saudi soil, as the author points out.
And who is in this budding alliance? Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, that's who.
Pakistan has been moving to the Islamists for some time and they pose an ultimate existential threat to us. For years they sheltered Osama Bin Laden (they knew full well where he was) and while they have occasionally acquiesced to us it isn't because they love us. Pakistan in this agreement is a dangerous thing. What happens if they go to war with, say, India? They now have Saudi Arabia and Turkey on their side if that should happen. The Saudis could close the Red Sea if they so chose. And of course what was a two nation war could become global very quickly.
Turkey, you may remember, is in NATO. So if India and Pakistan go to war will NATO be dragged into it? And that may well mean the U.S. will have to choose between honoring our NATO commitments or breaking our treaty with the Turks.
We do NOT want to unify the Middle East.
I imagine it won't be long before Syria wants in, or Jordan, or Lebanon. And what of the Gulf States, like Kuwait or Oman or the UAE?
The author is right; Trump wants to get us out of the Middle East. If there was a responsible third party who would step in to take our place I would applaud, but it will likely be China who would do it. That would be very bad on any level one looks at it.
Who else? Logically the E.U. would step in since they are part of NATO and the Turks bring the NATO alliance into the game. But we've seen very little appetite among the NATO countries to do anything at all outside of their little borders.
Russia? Not who we want by any stretch.
That means we are stuck with this problem like it or not. There will be a blood-bath if we simply leave this region on autopilot. Muslims hate each-other as much as they hate Jews and Christians, just about, and the slaughter of the Muslims will begin as soon as all the Jews are wiped out in Israel and the Christians purged from every country in which they currently reside.
We could just pull out, Levant Interruptus, but the world economy will collapse when oil stops flowing from the region. And while the U.S. has plenty of oil the other nations of the world so blessed and outside of the Middle East simply refuse to get it, being in love with their global warming hysteria. So a blowup in the region will lead to a huge economic collapse and a depression which will make the Great Depression look like a blip on the world economic graph.
That's what sucks about being the only adult in the room; you have to keep all the unruly children under control all the time. No time to socialize and drink cocktails.
The author points out Pakistan was brought in for their nuclear arsenal, to act as a counter-balance to Israel's. Of course this could lead to a nuclear exchange between the two countries.
And he points out that Greece and Turkey have long been at odds over Cyprus and a skirmish there could bring in the rest of the alliance against the Greeks. What would NATO do in that case? EVERYONE would call in the U.S.
The Indo-Pakistani hostility goes back to the partitioning of the Subcontinent by the British just after WWII ended. They HATE each-other. Both have nuclear weapons too and it's always been a worry someone would push the button there. Then we get to test the nuclear winter hypothesis in real time.
Anyway, India won't be happy about this.
The author states:
"India’s Maj. General (Ret.) Gagan Deep Bakshi argued that the emergence of what he calls a "Sunni NATO" in the Middle East is a source of strategic concern for India. For example, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait — a chokepoint for India’s energy imports and trade — could fall under the influence of a bloc that excludes Indian strategic participation. And the stationing of advanced Turkish military hardware or personnel in the region would be a force multiplier for Pakistan."
The British were masters of the strategy of balance of power, playing off one nation against another to divide them and guaranteeing the security of others. In the Gulf States Britain made small kingdoms like Oman and Bahrain protectorates, and thus secured their control of India's eastern boundary.
Luckily India has long had bad relations with China (which is why they sought nukes in the first place) and are unlikely to try to make a treaty with the Chinese but you never know; if they think this changes the balance of power with Pakistan to a point dangerous for them they may well choke down their dislike of China and try to cut a deal with the Chicoms.
They may even try to cut a deal with the U.S. For a long time Indian has tried to maintain its "third way" by staying neutral in great power politics. But that may change if this succeeds. But the U.S. would be largely insane to get into a NATO like pact with India under such circumstances. We are already horribly entangled in foreign pacts. The U.S. is fairly in a Gordian Knot of foreign defense pacts. India would offer little to us, or at least not enough to us to make it worthwhile.
One final thought on this. The Bible speaks of the "King of the South" at Armageddon and it is generally assumed to be the Islamic World. A military alliance of this nature will have to exist for that to transpire. It also would create a reason for China to intervene if they would be brought in as a counterweight to the loss of American security. If Russia were to make a mutual defense pact with a member state of this alliance they would be obligated to come in. What happens if Israel is forced to go to war with, say, Syria (which is not yet a member but could be in the future) and Russia would have a treaty with Syria (which they already do to some degree) the Russians may come in, then if this agency had a treaty with the Chinese and THEY came in then we would see the End Time prophecy come true.

Felix Unger to a District Judge Who Ordered the Post Office to Deliver Mail-in Ballots

Another activist judge blocks (yet again) the Post Office from implementing rules for mail-in voting that require they be done properly and without the opportunity for fraudulent ballots moving through the USPC.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani of Boston has once again simply ignored the Supreme Court's ruling that said district judges may not impose nation-wide injunctions by issuing this edict, which temporarily halted the USPS program requiring verifiable voting via the postal service. The Post Office has long had rules against mail fraud and those were never challenged by the courts in times past.
Judge Indira Talwani - a woman who got her law degree from UC Berkeley and was appointed to the bench by our favorite Bolshevik Barack Hussein Obama (pee, er, peace be upon him) said there was no "compelling evidence" of vote fraud by mail-in ballots and so the Post Office could not restrict their delivery.
But that isn't the point. The USPS restricts delivery of suspicious mail all the time. It's not for a judge to decide; postal service is not a legal right but a service. It's a private corporation (even if wholly owned by the U.S. government) and it can operate outside of the normal rules of the bureaucracy.
There are any number of federal statutes against mail fraud including one that is amazingly appropriately named United States v. Schmuck, 489 U.S. 705, 710 (1989). (Schuck said the mail need not be the essential part of the scheme - if it is incidental to the plot it still is a crime.) But this scheme doesn't fall under that - it falls under Kann, 323 U.S. 88 (1980) which states:
"For conviction under the mail fraud statute, the mails must be used 'for the purpose of executing' the fraudulent scheme, and not merely 'as a result of' such scheme."
Mail in vote fraud most certainly does qualify for conviction under this statute.
Fraud is actually handled not by the USPS but by the United States Postal Inspection Service, which IS a federal agency and not a private corporation as is the USPS. As such they work for the President of the United States and are a law-enforcement agency under the DOJ. This agency can do searches and seizures and make arrests.
But they are not the ones who are actually restricting mail-in ballot operations. It is the USPS acting on it, based on advisory guidelines handed to them by the USPIS. The Post Office has to impose the rules for mail-in ballots.
I rather doubt the lower courts have any legal authority over rules governing what mail is accepted when fraud is suspected. This Obama judge is simply second-guessing the USPS and USPIS. You might call her a USPOS.
If I wanted to waste half the day on this I could probably dig up smoking gun statutes but I'm not going to bother. That is for lawyers and their paid paralegals to do. As I work for free I don't see any reason to do it.
At any rate this judge is once again overstepping her authority and hopefully will be smacked down by the appellate court. Or Trump's administration should just ignore her. Maybe deliver mail in HER jurisdiction only. Frankly they should give her a big Felix Unger ("it too me two days to realize FU meant Felix Unger" - Oscar Madison).

Good morning Aviary readers!
I've been gone a few days and there is an explanation for that - a good one. I was on vacation - the first vacation I've had in a long, long time.
My older brother has become increasingly concerned about keeping us together as a family, as our parents are now dead and with the passing of my father in January the draw that brings everyone together was gone. And we are getting older and certainly my health is a bit dicey, so he's been wanting us to get together on a vacation. His plan was a bit more grandiose; he wanted to do southern Florida.
But I begged off; I think that long, long drive (we would be driving) was going to be too hard on me. I proposed an alternate idea; we meet in the middle (he lives in Kentucky) at a place I spent many happy days at in southern Illinois.
My dear wife and I discovered this region long, long ago, just as they were getting it up and going. At the time a third winery had just opened up and I read about it in a pamphlet I found at a rest stop in Illinois one time. We started going there regularly after that and watched it grow into a major tourist destination. There are now something like twelve wineries on the Shawnee Hills wine trail, although sadly a couple have closed and my very favorite one is going out of business.
Cathy passed away in December and I was sad I probably wouldn't get back there - no point going by myself and who else would I go with? Well...
My brother and his significant other agreed to join me for one last fling in the Shawnee Hills. It was good because it was a relatively short drive for both of us. Two and a half hours for me, four hours for him.
Sadly my other brother was unable to attend. The point of this was for all of us to be together.
Anyway I was proud of myself; I feared breaking down on this trip with nostalgia and memories of my wife but didn't do it. Partly it was the dynamic; my brother Eric was in high form, a stream of endless jokes and barbs and we had a wonderful time! Lisa gives as good as she gets too and I laughed pretty much nonstop the whole trip.
It was tough that and I was still hobbling with a cane because of a bad foot (I had had minor surgery on my foot and it was still healing) plus back problems and so I was teetering along. And my brother booked our cabin at Giant City Lodge, a great state park with cabins and a wonderful country restaurant in a lodge setting, but the cabin he booked required a pretty "healthy" hike down a steep grade.
The walking down wasn't too bad but the walking up was, uh, challenging for a guy with a bad back and bum foot. It was wearing on my brother and his gal but it was just brutal on me. There was a hand-rail though which was helpful. And Lisa would stay back with me and help me go.
It made me feel like an old man but as I AM an old man, or near enough, I suppose I better get used to it.
We got the lodge to send a woman down with a golf cart when we left, so we didn't have to carry all our stuff down. But it was brutal going any way you slice it. We left our coolers in the cars and brought just one six pack cooler.
Lisa had taken to walking for exercise so we made her go back to the cars when we needed anything. Poor girl; she was a real trooper. Up, down, up, down. I suspect she was the only one of the three of us who lost weight rather than gained it on this trip!
At any rate the trip was a great success, even if we didn't get to do everything I hoped. We never made it to Bald Knob Cross, for instance. That is also called the Cross of Peace. It's a hundred and fifty foot tall crucifix, ivory white, that sits atop the second tallest mountain in Illinois and, since the top is treeless (hence the name) it is visible for miles around. They light it at night too. Magnificent sight if you are out at night!
Also, since I was hobbled we never did any of the natural stuff like the Little Grand Canyon (a deep canyon where the Big Muddy River cut through) or any of the local lakes. Shoot; I would have liked to rent canoes for the river but there wasn't enough time.
But it was a fine trip. We ate our heads off at the restaurant there. Big, meaty portions of everything, from the unlimited fried chicken dinner (their specialty) to their catfish and bison and they even had prime rib (which I had one day). Breakfast was naturally quite hearty, like a Cracker Barrel repast.
And we drank a LOT of wine, hitting several of the wineries a day. In the early days the wines of the region were just mediocre, but now that the vines have matured the wines have improved a lot.
We mostly had dry or semi-dry whites, as it was hot and Eric and Lisa preferred them. We did have red at Hickory Ridge, my favorite winery in the area (and the most isolated; they just created a winery in the middle of the deep forest, cut it right out, and it was always the most rustic. Oh, and it specialized in dry reds. Those reds aged beautifully too. I bought a few bottles and one of their bottles of port as well and plan on drinking them on occasions that would have involved my wife Cathy - such as our anniversary, or Christmas, or her next birthday. Sadly this winery is going out of business since the owners are retiring and they live on the property. They are leasing out their vineyard for the grapes.)
A few more points; the first day we left the lodge and my brother put the GPS system on. It got stuck in an infinite loop and led us around in circles for about an hour. Crazy thing! It's very easy to get lost around there; it's very deep woods, not quite mountainous but close, and the roads all look alike. Plus the wineries aren't very close together and the trail isn't well marked with signage. Much of the trip was spent driving. I kept nagging them that first day to get going and they didn't understand why I was so eager to hit the wineries. By the time we got to the first one it was getting a bit late; it took that long to get there. I knew it would since we had to get our feet wet with this back-country driving.
It got easier the longer we stayed.
And I got lost on my way out, and wound up well north of where I wanted to be. I had no GPS and at one point was thinking "where the HELL am I" but I have an excellent sense of direction (normally) and I found a road and just turned on it and it was U.S. 51, the very road I wanted. I had no further trouble after that.
Another interesting tidbit; I was chatting with the wine pour guy at Alto Vineyards and he said all the wineries have been hurting because of the legalization of marijuana. Apparently the college kids don't drink anymore - they sit in their dorms and smoke weed until they brains rot rather than go down to the wineries and pay fifteen, twenty, twenty five bucks for a bottle of wine. This dovetails with what I've learned from craft brewers around the St. Lous area, who tell me that they too have lost the younger generation to the Devil's Lettuce. Young people aren't drinking much anymore - they've been told by their teachers and society alcohol is evil, so they went to the "good stuff", which is now cheaper and now legal in most places. So the alcohol industry is suffering and importers of pot are getting rich. This directly affects the Mom and Pop wineries, which started life as someone's fondest dream and ends in bankruptcy because the kids are too stoned to waste time and money on the labor of love that is wine.
The Shawnee Hills wine trail is just a few miles south of Carbondale, home to Southern Illinois University. It's also just about fifteen, twenty miles northeast of Southeast Missouri University in Cape Girardeau. That's why so large a wine industry could thrive in so rural and backwoods an area.
Anyway it was a wonderful trip and I felt like my old self (rather than just old). It was so merry too; I thought about Cathy (in fact I probably talked about her far too much but I needed to do it) but didn't cry at all. I am really grateful to Eric and Lisa for this - it was just what I needed.
It's too bad my other brother couldn't make it. He needed it too, but he's got a class to teach and those college kids aren't going to learn it by osmosis.
So I apologize for not being here this week. But even the best of us need a vacation from time to time, and it was long overdue.

I've long argued mainstream media types are batcrap crazy and this proves it!
Yes, this former news anchor in St. Louis really did murder her sleeping mother.
Angelynn E. Mock was arrested in Wichita on charges of murdering her mother, with whom she lived. She had worked as an anchor in St. Louis but was let go because of alcohol abuse. She apparently suffered from schizophrenia.
Mock was formerly an anchor at KTVI Fox2 News.
While she is mentally ill police found everything laid out to perpetrate the murder so she was charged and convicted. She is scheduled for sentencing.
I wonder how many other crazies inhabit our airways?

Newsom signed the Stop Nick Shirley Act despite its brazen lack of Constitutionality.
It's all about waiting until the next election. Get through that and hopefully there will be a different climate that will allow Democrats to brazenly violate the law. Newsom has no idea of what to do to keep the lid on the corruption in California, but he's got to put it on the back burner. Come '28 he hopes a Democrat will be in the White House and it will be back to business as usual.
I cannot stress enough the importance of the next few election cycles.

Carney (Unofficially) Declares War on U.S.

The mouse that roared? More like the mouse that squeaked pathetically.
What a pompous jackass!
They've been attacking US for decades with unfair trade practices, knowing our milquetoast leadership would never retaliate. Well, Mr. Trump has many bad qualities but one he does NOT have is milquetoast leadership.
So what is Carney going to do? I am mindful of an episode of the Simpsons where Abu, the Quickee Mart owner, tells Homer to stop drinking slurpees straight from the tap "I have asked you nicely to stop. Now I have no choice but to ask you nicely again".
After whining like a little b, er, girl Carney made this terrifying threat:
The Canadian PM, who previously served as a central banker, declared that retaliatory tariffs on the US will go into effect on Sept. 8. He said Canada will match the US "dollar for dollar.”
The economy of the United States is ten times as large as Canada's. It will be fun to see Carney try this; his economy will collapse.
Canada's economy is inextricably linked to the American. In 2025 Canada exported US$408.99 Billion to the U.S. Imagine if they lost all of that trade! Canada imports $262 billion from the U.S. so a trade will is something Canada is going to be hard-pressed to survive.
If Carney wants to go to war somewhere maybe he should help us in Iran. But war fever against the U.S. is silly and will cost the Canadians dearly.
Carney is up for re-election and the Conservative Party candidate is down 12 percentage points as of this month, so he probably need not fear losing his seat, but it's an election year so he needs a boogieman just in case. Orange Man is the best scary bedtime story he can tell since most Canadians take pride in one thing - they aren't Americans. Otherwise their country has little to brag about. They chose July 1 as Canada Day to coincide with our July 4 Independence day, for instance. Their national anthem was chosen by committee, as was their flag. Nothing there to point to, unlike ours which were born in fire and war.
So hating on America is Canada's big pastime. And that is what Carney hopes to exploit. But he's going to find hard words are no substitute for financial pressure. He's got a lot to lose.

Iran is Cracking

In my best Frank Sinatra voice "and now...the end is near...time to face...the final curtain."
From the New York Post:
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that mounting economic pressure on Tehran is taking its toll, while cautioning against "humiliatingly” backing down "before the enemy.”
"The war must come to an end at some point,” Pezeshkian said in a speech Friday, per state media. "It is better that we demonstrate our strength and dignity today and tell the world that we have won and that we are ending the war.”
That "telling the world they have won" will necessitate surrender in all by name only and they know it. But what choice do they have?
Trump is squeezing the life out of them. And it's about to get much worse.
We can't trust any deal they make, of course, and they will immediately begin trying to cheat on any promises made. But not only should we not let them completely off the hook (we should keep a lot of sanctions in place and only remove them after compliance) but we should start working to remove the government and replace it with a truly pluralistic one. The only way to stop Iran from causing trouble is regime change. We need to help the Iranian People get rid of the Mullahs.
But that can be for later; now we need to get them to agree to the terms we have set down - get rid of all nuclear material and allow inspections of facilities, open the strait of Hormuz, and stop funding terrorists abroad. Force them to agree to those and set up mechanisms for compliance and then make them stick to it while we undermine their authority and power.
Anyway the article states:
"I was in the presence of the Supreme Leader, and in his speeches as well, he openly stated that we must move beyond this state of ‘neither war nor peace,'” Pezeshkian claimed, per a translation referring to Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who hasn’t been seen publicly since the war in Iran began.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the crux of the brilliance of Trump's policies. Iran sponsors Jihad, holy war. How do you fight a holy war when the enemy isn't fighting you, but rather is squeezing your economy? Increasingly the enemy appears not as the Great Satan but their own leaders who are impoverishing and starving their own country in a fruitless, willful struggle against an enemy who won't fight you directly. To people who think as do the Shiite Muslims in the IRGC it's maddening. They can't Djin up anger against America and they can't win this fight. That is why they kept lobbing missiles as other Middle Eastern countries, to try to get those countries to turn on America in the interest of being left alone. That would force the U.S. ultimately to put boots on the ground.
It didn't work because Trump isn't Joe Biden or Barack Obama. He's not even George w. Bush. He knows how to use leverage in ways that hurt.
"No matter how much military power we have, if people are hungry and we do not have financial circulation and economic growth, we will not endure,” Ghalibaf said, per Iranian sate media. "As someone who has experienced war, I understand the true value of peace.”
Most modern wars are won or lost based on economics, not military might. Yes, a strong nation can maybe invade and overrun a weak one (look at the U.S. in Iraq) but why lose all those troops and then get stuck governing a hostile territory? You can crush them far more effectively with economic pressure. It's how WWI ended.
Iran counted on oil. They believed if they closed the Strait of Hormuz, where a quarter of the world's oil moved, they could win any struggle based on economics. They called Trump's bluff, and this has led to new routes for oil transport being developed. Pipelines to bypass the Strait (and the entrance to the Red Sea). Of course the U.S. is lousy with oil and we took over oil from Venezuela, another top producer. The U.S. is now King Arab.
So their leverage is gone and they won't be able to project power any longer. They are waiting too long to cut a deal, but they fear they must drag their feet because otherwise the public will get uppity if they sense weakness. Also they hope the Democrats will win the midterm elections and end the war by imposing the War Powers Act. But it increasingly appears the GOP may win the midterms and that hope is fading.
If they want to cling to power they have to cut a deal. Every day they delay makes it worse.
That's why Trump is increasing the pressure now, just in case. It would be nice to bring the troops home, or at least some of them, before the election, but the fact remains that the public isn't angry at Trump for Iran, even if polling suggests they aren't thrilled with it. You know how I know? I did a web search and couldn't find any recent polling data on it - most data go back to May or June. That tells me they aren't reporting good news (from our perspective). The public didn't much like it back then. If that were true now the wen crawlers would be all over it. They aren't.
If Trump gets a solid deal now and starts demobilizing we'll win just that much more in the elections.
That in no way suggests anyone should stay home come November; we are facing a momentous election and if we screw this up it's curtains for America and I mean that literally. This was and remains our big chance to restore sanity to this country.
But it's looking good.
In another NY Post article we learn traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is up 400 percent as the Iranians no longer have the ability to stop shipping.
They are on the run.
