New IRS filing shows Mark Zuckerberg spent at least $5.1 million to influence 2020 election offices in Arizona.

This is a shocking amount of money, but even this appears to underestimate the actual dollar figure that Zuckerberg spent in our state

Happy Boxing Day!

Timothy Birdnow

Happy boxing day! Today is traditionally called Boxing Day, and it has nothing to do with the Sweet Science so much as with the fact that the British upper class would box up their old things the day after Christmas to make room for their new stuff and would donate this to the poor.

Of course, it also has led to a tradition of boxing matches on the day after Christmas and even on Christmas itself. (I stayed home with my wife this year, eating lamb chops and drinking a fine Bordeaux as we watched the prize fights last night.) Nothing says Peace on Earth like an exhibition of two men beating the tar out of each-other!

Anyway, in addition to this being Boxing Day it's also the Feast of Stephen, the Proto-martyr. Stephen, you may remember, was an early day Christian who had the unfortunate luck of running into a mob led by Saul of Tarsis, who took everyone's coats while they stoned him. (And wehn I say stoned I mean threw rocks at him until he was dead, not gave him too much spiked eggnog.) So this is an important day in the Christmas holiday season.

The Nativity

The Word of the Lord:

1"Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts.

2But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire, like a launderer's soap.

3And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will present offerings to the LORD in righteousness.

4Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD, as in days of old and years gone by.

5"Then I will draw near to you for judgment. And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, and against those who defraud laborers of their wages and deny justice to the foreigner but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts

Malachi3: 1-5

1"For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble; the day is coming when I will set them ablaze,” says the LORD of Hosts. "Not a root or branch will be left to them.”

2"But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like calves from the stall. 3Then you will trample the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day I am preparing,” says the LORD of Hosts.

4"Remember the Law of Moses My servant, the statutes and ordinances I commanded him for all Israel at Horeb.

5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful Day of the LORD. 6And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Washington's Christmas Miracle

Timothy Birdnow

America owes her existence in no small part to a Christmas miracle.

The Continental Army was about finished.

After a series of defeats at the hands of the British, Washington's men spent the early days of December in 1776 in an utterly miserable time in winter's quarters. Hungry, sick, half naked, the men had but one hope - most of them would be dismissed on New Years Day after finishing their term.

General Washington was desperate, and he had but one chance.

So he decided to attack.

There was an encampment of Hessians across the Delaware river in New Jersey, and Washington decided to launch a surprise attack on Christmas Day.

Washington's battle plan was to cross the half-frozen river by boats at three separate places. But the weather was inclement and only one of the three groups made it across.

Because spies and informants had likely informed the British, Trenton was expected to be on alert and well guarded.

But to Washington's good fortune the weather was lousy; it threw off his timetable. Hessian scouts found no evidence of any American troops when they checked. Had Washington been on time the word would have come to the enemy.

Also, a band of Patriots not associated with the Continental Army made a rather pointless attack early in the day and had been easily repelled. The Hessians believed this was the attack they had been warned may come.

After making the perilous crossing of the Delaware river, Washington's men began marching in the driving snow. The wind was ferocious and it helped hide the movements of Washington's 2400 men. Many of them were barefoot and they left a crimson trail in their wake, feet bleeding as they marched.

Meanwhile in Trenton the Hessians were enjoying their Christmas. As there was little chance of an American attack the commander of the German mercenaries gave them the day off, and much feasting and drinking and general merriment ensued. Warm by the fires, they were caught completely by surprise  when the Continental Army moved silently into town and the battle ensued.

It was a route.

This was the first great victory of Washington in the war since his first encounter at Second Bunker Hill. And, having defeated the German mercenaries, he then turned towards Princeton to win over the British forces there.

While this did not turn the tide of war, it kept the American cause alive at a critical moment.

Had this gone the way logic would have dictated, the Armerican Revolution would have ended that winter. But Providence gave us a great Christmas gift, one that would eventually lead to our independence.

Almost all of the men re-enlisted, and the Continental Congress appropriated more funds, excited by the great news of the victories.

This Christmas miracle led Washington to state:

"No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency"

End quote.

And indeed there is a saying that God protects fools and small children and the United States. He did for a long time as we understood who it was who was providing us His protection.

So we can celebrate not just the birth of Christ this Christmas but also the birth of a nation.

The End of Days

Malachi 4

1 "Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty. "Not a root or a branch will be left to them.
2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.
3 Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the LORD Almighty.
4 "Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.
5 "See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.
6 He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

The end.

And for four hundred years silence reigned in Heaven.

Brilliant Business Model

James Doogue

For years Big Pharma have been jealous of Big Tech. They envied Big Tech's business model of locking users in to monthly payments for life.

With Covid-19 vaccines and boosters and testing, Big Pharma have copied that business model. But they went two better. First by getting the Government to pay for all users so there's no consumer push back on costs or value for money. Secondly by getting the government to provide complete product indemnity.

Big Tech are working on copying this new model and they have access to our regulators!

Bountiful Harvest

This was posted by the inestimable Bjorn Lomborg:

Fortunately, the prediction from both economists and the UN is that the average person over the century will get about 5x richer — and could be 10x (bad policies could also lead us much astray)

Read more in my peer-reviewed article:
https://sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0040162520304157

Tim adds:

Bet that won't happen. The wealthier the world becomes the more amenable it becomes to socialistic policies and economic disgruntlement (to coin a phrase) and that is going to lead to an eventual slowdown of economic growth. War is coming, as is the Green New Deal which will strangle economic output. I think it would happen if we weren't moving into the slough of despond wrought by leftist policies and a thirst for "equity".

Some will grow richer - vastly richer. But the average person will decline into a kind of easy poverty, supported by unhealthy doses of a social safety net that drags them down and keeps them there. And the poor will remain poor and angry.

What we've seen in the West in recent years is the coming trend, unless we somehow beat it back.

Scrooge and overpopulation

Dana Mathewson

Since our site's owner Timothy has been posting Christmas stories (some more fanciful than others) that are based at least a bit on Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," I thought I'd offer up this article from the Christian Post.

We all know that there is some kind of economic theme running through Charles Dickens' most famous novel, A Christmas Carol. The problem is that modern people tend to read their own views into the story instead of paying close attention to the details of the story itself. The standard modern interpretation is that A Christmas Carol is a condemnation of business, and a call for the state to step in and become the provider for the poor. But look closer and you'll see that the truth is quite in the opposite direction.

For example, when a pair of men come to Scrooge's office asking for private donations for the poor, Scrooge responds,

"Are there no prisons? ... And the Union workhouses?... Are they still in operation? ... The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then? … I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course … "

Scrooge is refusing to give private aid and instead throwing the responsibility onto public, government entities. The alms-askers decry the cruelty of these institutions. "Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”

"If they would rather die…they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population," is Scrooge's reply.

And in this exchange we see what the economics of A Christmas Carol is all about. It is a condemnation of the philosophy of scarcity and population growth hysteria popularized by Thomas Malthus. Malthus argued that history showed population tends to grow faster than the food supply, and therefore population growth was dangerous and might cause mass starvation. Historians now recognize that Malthus himself, both an economist and a Christian pastor, eventually came to a more balanced position. He corresponded with the free-market economist Jean Baptiste-Say, the forefather of modern supply-side economics and the man who coined the word "entrepreneur." Say argued that economic growth was driven by increasing the supply of goods and services and the world could consume more as it learned to produce more. He is responsible for something called "Say's Law;" i.e., "supply creates its own demand." In other words, production is the basis of consumption. As entrepreneurs move resources to more productive endeavors, supply increases, which means there's more for us to consume.

But Malthusian ideology did not shift along with its namesake, and English elites lived in fear of excess breeding among the poor classes. They devised programs for the poor that were intentionally cruel, keeping them in cold and hunger and abusive circumstances. In modern parlance, the cruelty was a feature, not a bug. The point was to impose pain on the poor to keep them from bringing more poor people into the world. As Solomon said, "The compassion of the wicked is cruel."

Dickens put the words of Malthus into the mouth of Scrooge, when he wrote the phrase "surplus population." That would have been easily recognized by educated readers at the time. Scrooge was what we would call an advocate of "Zero Population Growth" (ZPG). Malthus' ideas were key to the work of Charles Darwin and through him down into the various eugenics movements of the 20th century. Nazism was built on Malthus. The gas chambers were the "final solution" to certain segments of "the surplus population." In the "free world" the Malthusians took a more medical than military approach in the form of public health efforts at mass sterilization and, barring that, abortion. Surely a post-1973 version of Scrooge would have asked, "Are there no abortion clinics, are they still in operation?"

Later we see Scrooge talking with the Ghost of Christmas Present who tells him that he has over 1,800 brothers (i.e. over 1,800 Christmases have passed since the first one in Bethlehem.) Scrooge's reaction is to exclaim how difficult it would be to provide for such a large family, at which point the Ghost rises in indignation, reaches for his sword and looms over a frightened and stopping Scrooge. Christmas Present is rightly offended by Scrooge's philosophy, which treats his brothers as burdens rather than blessings. Later, Christmas Present rebukes Scrooge for his wish that the "surplus population" would die off, suggesting that perhaps the Tiny Tims of the world were greater "in the sight of Heaven" than the men who wished that such sick children had never been born.

Malthus has been smacked around in these pages on more than one occasion, and here's another shot at him. And remember that Ebenezer Scrooge was redeemed at the end of the story.

Linked here, a wonderful talk from a good and compassionate man who reminds me of the man described in Psalm 15:2; "He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness, who speaks the truth from his heart." His truthful talk is about the article in New York magazine, in which a young woman who has been horribly mutilated by heartless doctors is held up as a model for humanity. Oklahoma murder conviction tossed after judge found to be having affair with prosecutor

Dana Mathewson

Apparently, sexual abuse and misconduct is not confined to CNN.

An Oklahoma man’s murder conviction has been overturned after it was discovered that the county judge who presided over the trial was having a sexual relationship with one of the prosecutors.

Robert Hashagen III was convicted in February of murdering 94-year-old Evelyn Goodall in 2013.

But now that conviction has been tossed after former Oklahoma County District Judge Tim Henderson admitted to having a sexual relationship with a district attorney in his office who helped prosecute the case, FOX25 Oklahoma City reported.

Robert Hashagen III was convicted in February of murdering 94-year-old Evelyn Goodall in 2013.(Oklahoma County Jail)

Henderson, who is married, resigned in March after three female attorneys came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against him, the Oklahoman previously reported.

One of the three attorneys was a prosecutor in the Hashagen case. She said the judge began sexually abusing her in April 2016 and continued until July or August 2018, according to the paper.

Henderson described the sexual involvement as consensual and said he maintained his role "as a neutral and detached judicial officer" at all times during the Hashagen case.

"My rulings were fair and supported by the evidence and facts presented by the attorneys," he said.

However, the scandal may impact even more cases.

I should think so! For the rest of the story, go here: https://www.foxnews.com/us/oklahoma-murder-conviction-tossed-judge-affair-prosecutor

The gods of this World

The Incarnation of the State as God is opposite in means and objective to the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, the God-man.

The State seeks to rule us from cradle to grave in order to enslave us to worship it under threat.

The Savior came to serve us from manger to cross in order to free us with new life to worship God willingly in spite of threat.

Christmas and the Cross

Timothy Birdnow

And yet another Christmas poem from the archives:

Christmas and the Cross

by Timothy Birdnow

A prisoner of his own fault
ensnared in vain and doomed default
Man walks this world in pain and loss
His only hope is Christmas and the Cross

I looked about in sore despair
A world so wore and full of care
winds unfurled; at sea were tossed
Yet all still flee from Chrismas and the Cross

How can it be if there be God
that Man should suffer iron rod?
I pray my plea to Heaven's gloss
A way must be to Chrismas and the Cross

my brain so full of this assault
my train of thought in much tumult
My bed disquiet, I pitch and toss
I can find no rest, no Christmas nor the Cross

But He endured though much to bear
and took the chore of judgement chair
His birth the sages did emboss
the pages spoke of Chrismas and the Cross

for Christ did come and without halt
to save the sum with no exalt
and Man is freed from that dreadful cost
Yes, there truly is a Chrismas, and a Cross

Now free from my iniquity I soar with no real care
I now can see the Christmas tree, so beautiful and fair
A Savior born on this bright day, the veil torn across
salvation come on Christmas day, and finished with the Cross!
And finished with the Cross...

A Hillary Christmas Carol

Timothy Birdnow

Another one from the archives:

Now old Hillary's electoral prospects were dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of her loss was certified across these United States and signed by the Electors of the College of gentlemen and ladies appointed to the task. It was called by the Associated Press on election night in November, and that is good upon Change for anything the venerable news outlet put its hand to. Hillary's prospects were dead as a door nail.

Obama knew she was finished? Of course he did. Obama and Hillary were partners in crime for I don't know how many years.

Well, actually I do; since Obama managed to snatch the nomination from old Hillary back in 2008.

Oh! But she was a tight-fisted hand at the grind- stone, Hillary! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. The cold within her froze her husband's randy ardor, nipped her pointed nose, shriveled her cheek, stiffened her gait; made her eyes red, her thin lips blue and spoke out shrewdly in her grating voice. A frosty rime was on her head, and on her eyebrows, and her wiry chin. Se carried her own low temperature always about with her; she iced her office in the dogdays; and didn't thaw it one degree at Christmas. Her pantsuits and Mao jackets were flecked with frost.

And the same could be said of Obama, the old community organizer, who, if he could work his will, would have had every "bitter clinger" in Middle America boiled in his own motor oil and garnished with a dollop of high sculpture coal.

When told of her loss by John Podesta Hillary proclaimed "Bah!" said she "Humbug!" "Are there no prisons?" "No Union sweat shops?" "How could we not find enough votes in those places?"

She bemoaned the inconvenience of picking men's pockets without the government access to back it up.

At which she began devising a devious scheme; blame the Russians for doing what she herself had failed to do, steal the election.

All the Democrats got onboard, from Obama to the CIA and even old the F.B.I.'s Fezziwig Comey. The fake news media turned even bluer than when Hillary was present, crying out from every window at passers-by "Trump and the Russians stole the election!" And claims were made, claims heard by a friend who heard from a friend, who heard from another that the shadowy Russians had tampered with our election. Obama even uttered a threat to retaliate at a time of our choosing (boldly plagiarizing George W. Bush.)

After downing a full quart of vodka as was her custom and settling in for a winter's nap Hillary was awakened from her stupor to find her bed curtains drawn back and found herself face to face with an unearthly visitor.

It was like a child, yet not so like a child but like an old man. At first Hillary thought it was Huma Abedin, but she vaguely resembled Vince Foster, and also looked more like Monica Lewinsky.

"I am the ghost of elections past."

"Long past?"

"No, the elections you tampered with in YOUR past."

The Foster/Lewinsky glowed with the light of truth, and carried with her/him (now HERE is a transgendered person, thought the old hag) a conical hat.

"Put that ridiculous hat on your head; you're blinding me!"

"That is the light of truth. Would you extinguish the Truth?"

"Hell yes, if it means I can be President!"

Hillary was compelled to take hold of the cloak of the spirit and leave the room in her night clothes (and was, thankfully to all, invisible.)

The spirit conducted her first to Nairobi Kenya.

There in 2006 she witnessed her former boss, Barack Hussein Obama, a fellow member of the U.S. Senate, tampering with the Kenyan election. Obama went to Kenya to openly campaign for Raila Odinga, neo-Marxist and radical Muslim and fellow Luo tribe member. Obama appointed an aid to act as special liaison to Odinga canadafreepress.com/article/obama-and-odinga and, when the other O lost, he was quite put out. Odinga claimed fraud and called for violence, which erupted across the country leading to the deaths of many Kenyans and the destruction of much property. Over 300 Christian churches were burned by Odinga's Muslim followers. A power sharing arrangement was enacted with Odinga becoming Prime Minister (at the behest of the U.S.) and repeated attempts have been made to install Odinga as President. That effort was ongoing through Hillary's tenure as Secretary of State and is still happening today. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2013/03/205553.htm

U.S. financing of election "reforms" in Kenya amount to $20 million dollars in "aid".
https://researchfunding.duke.edu/kenya-electoral-assistance-program-keap-2017

Then in 2010 Hillary and Obama violated the Siljander Amendment in a push to enshrine abortion in the Kenyan constitution.
http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/obamas-push-to-legalize-abortion-in-kenya-broke-u-s-law/ This is tampering at the highest level, and the spirit told Hillary so. She replied "Humbug!"

So the Spirit took her to Honduras.

There she was shown the drama of the ouster of communist President Manuel Zalaya, who sought to overturn the Honduran constitution and install himself President-for-life.
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/06/28/wsj-white-house-tried-to-prevent-honduran-presidents-ouster/

Zalaya was term limited, but wanted more. He tried to violate the constitution by holding a referendum to get rid of that pesky term limit. He lost in court, with the Honduran Supreme Court ultimately ordering his removal from office (as he had no intention of obeying either the Court order nor the orders of his legislature.) In a perfectly legal fashion the other branches of government ordered his removal and the military carried it out. Led by Hillary, the U.S. branded this a "coup" and demanded Zalaya's return to power.

Hillary was adamant that Zalaya be returned.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/31/world/americas/31honduras.html

"During a half-hour telephone call last week, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took a leading role, making it clear to Mr. Micheletti that the United States was growing impatient with the stalemate and demanding that democracy be restored.

(Interim Honduran President) Mr. Micheletti later joked with his aides that she stuck so close to her message it appeared she had a limited vocabulary.

"I kept trying to explain our position to her,” he said, according to officials close to the talks, "but all she kept saying was, ‘Restitution, restitution, restitution.’ ”

End excerpt.

Zalaya was later allowed to return to Honduras but not to power, a result of U.S. pressure. The end result was an eruption of lawlessness and chaos that triggered a mass migration of people - especially young people - from Honduras to the United States, where the Obama Administration immediately scattered the refugees across the country.

To this Hillary responded "It's all humbug, I tell you!"

So the Lewinsky Foster figure took her to Israel.

There in 2015 the United States under her boss Obama spent $300,000 to get Benjamin Netanyahu defeated.
http://freebeacon.com/national-security/congress-investigating-obama-admin-funded-campaign-unseat-israeli-pm/

"But I didn't have anything to do with that!"

"No" the Spirit replied "but those who are helping you make the claim now did."

So the Spirit led on.

To Egypt, where Clinton and Obama helped drive Hosni Mubarak from power in the so-called "Arab spring" by training the young protesters on community organizing. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/revolution-in-cairo/inside-april6-movement/

"In December 2008, one April 6 member visited the United States to take part in a State Department-organized "Alliance of Youth Movements Summit" in New York City. According to a recently released Wikileaks cable, the activist said he discussed with other activists there techniques to evade government surveillance and harassment."

End excerpt.

To Libya where Hillary's own policy of driving the erstwhile U.S. ally Moammar Khadafy from power led to the rise of ISIS.

To London where American banking giants Citigroup and Morgan Stanley as well as Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan donated massive sums of money to defeat the Brexit vote.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/11/official-pro-european-union-campaign-is-part-funded-by-goldman-s/

"But that didn't have anything to do with the U.S. government" Hillary protested.

"They took TARP money from your government and then attempted to influence a foreign election" the Spirit replied.

On and on they moved, to Belarus, to Bolivia, to Nicaragua. Everywhere the hand of the Hillary Obama machine was evident, heavily pressed on the body politic.

"Remove me!" Hillary exclaimed, "I cannot bear it!"

In the struggle, if that can be called a struggle in which the Ghost with no visible resistance on its own part was undisturbed by any effort of its adversary, Hillary observed that its light was burning high and bright; and dimly connecting that with its influence over him, she seized the extinguisher-cap, and by a sudden action pressed it down upon its head.

The Spirit dropped beneath it, so that the extinguisher covered its whole form; but though Hillary pressed it down with all her force, she could not hide the light, which streamed from under it, in an unbroken flood upon the ground.

After a moment, in which Hillary's eyes moved in opposing directions crazily, the apparition was gone.

Did you expect more? Did you expect Hillary to embrace the light and turn from her ways? Come on; this is Hillary we're talking about.

Hillary remained true to her nature, shaking down contributors and manipulating supporters and media alike. She would become a byword, a cautionary tale, an bad luck charm. It was said of her that if anyone knew how to Scrooge over the American People it was Hillary.

God help us, Everyone!

Why Christmas?

Timothy Birdnow

Here's one from the archives:

Why Christmas indeed? Non-Christians have a very difficult time understanding the religious implications of Christmas, and why it is so important to the Christian faith. Atheists scoff at Christmas in the religious sense because they think it nothing more than a co-opting of the old Roman Saturnalia, which was a pagan festival celebrating the winter solstice. I remember a few years ago atheists were saying "happy solstice!" in a vain attempt to de-sacralize Christmas. There has been a big push to eliminate Christmas, a war being waged on it, just as the Left (largely successfully) waged war on Easter; when I was a boy Easter was a big holiday, with everyone participating. Now it is primarily "spring break" and only in the churches is it even remembered that it is Easter (which to Christians is an even bigger holy day than Christmas.)

The forces of darkness have pressed heavily on the culture to disown Christ from His birth to His death and Resurrection.

But again, I must ask the question; why Christmas? What is so special about it? Is it the fun of giving and getting? The pageantry? The colorful lights, frosty air, ice skating? Ugly sweaters? Egg nog? (Well, there is something to be said for that!)

Is it something deeper? Perhaps about charity, kindness, good will?

Nope.

These are all good things and enjoyable at Christmastime, but are not the central point of Christmas. Much effort has been expended to make people think Christmas is either a commercial racket (it's run by a big Eastern syndicate, as Lucy Van Pelt says) or it's some feel-good tribute to the human spirit and dignity, also worthwhile to a degree but falling far short of the true meaning of Christmas. Look; you have all year to give to the poor. There is no special reason to give something at Christmastime except to make YOURSELF feel good. Christmas alms are not really that charitable because they are done for the wrong reasons. Don't get me wrong; giving is always a good thing! But true charity is done silently and without reward. Christmas charity is for show and warm fuzzy feelings. In the end it's about pleasure. And the good it accomplishes is limited.

And so we can say, like an onion, Christmas has layers, each of which peel off to reveal another layer. As Pontius Pilate asked Jesus before sentencing Him to death "what is Truth?"

The fact is all of this detracts from the REAL meaning of Christmas. This is the old snare of the Devil, to put on a magic show, to divert your attention so you miss what is happening.

See, God, who is infinite and far beyond our ability to comprehend, desired to share Himself and so began creating all manner of things and creatures. We don’t exactly understand why or how but suffice it to say we understand the what of it. Herein lies the problem, the stumbling block to so many; Islam, for instance, disdains Christianity for accepting so many mysteries, and innumerable heresies in the early days were tied to Gnostic beliefs, the idea that you should be able to understand God. Why should we? Most people do not understand quantum physics or relativity, and those are easy next to the absolute Creator of all things. But there is an arrogance in Man (an echo of the Fall) that demands understandable answers. Well, a Divine Being worthy of worship should NOT be understandable by our few measly pounds of gray matter. The notion that we can understand God and that we know best is a conceit born in Hell.

Literally; the legend, coming from the Bible, is that the greatest of the angelic beings created by God rebelled, seeking to be a god unto himself. We are talking about non-corporeal beings, and as such we translate what happened into anthropomorphic terms which are undoubtedly very imprecise, but suffice it to say Lucifer told God to buzz off. Leave, split, take a hike. Like any good parent the Almighty reluctantly let Lucifer and the other angels he had seduced go their own way, be their own gods. Up to that point God had given them everything, had made them infinitely happy. But for whatever reason Lucifer and some of the others rebelled.

Why? Well, if you were God would you make people love you? How hollow is that? Most of us have had the experience of unrequited love, where a person we are crazy about just isn't into us at all, and had we the power we might try to force them to love us. But we would always know that person loved us not for ourselves but because we MADE them. Love not freely offered is not love at all.

So what do you do if you are God? People might love your power, or love what you can do for them, but love Him for Himself? That has to be freely given. The answer is you let go and allow them to choose their own course. If they choose you you will be happy, but if not then, like Ebenezer Scrooge, may they be happy in the life they have chosen.

That we call Hell. Most people have childish visions of Hell as some sort of torture chamber with flames and cartoon devils with pitchforks, but the flames are metaphorical for the tortures of ones' own puss-filled heart. Hell could be a seemingly wonderful place! But in the end it will be a place of endlessness, a pointless existence at best. And you are there with all manner of people who you really don't like at all.

God really doesn't want that for anybody. But he is in a tight spot because he can't MAKE you love Him - or anyone else.

And you aren't fit to be in Heaven if you are a sinner, not because you can't be forgiven but because your negativity will ruin it for everyone else. A

When I was a boy I was on a swim team and we practiced early in the morning. I always hated to be the first person in the pool; the water was so calm, glass clear and I didn't want to be the person to roil it. It was perfect, see, and my entry was going to cloud it - and it would stay clouded until the next morning. Heaven is like that; a place where everyone is perfect and we poor sinners have to despoil it or stay out. We all choose to stay out without help.

Look at it this way; if we were all telepathic we would know everything about everyone. Our souls would be buck naked to the casual eye! NOW do you get it? Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Knowledge and SAW THEY WERE NAKED. Well, they knew they were physically naked - that wasn't the point. They were now aware that they had something to hide and no way to hide it. The fig leaf was a metaphorical attempt to cover their psychological nudity. As a kindness God kicked them out of paradise and sewed skins of animals into clothes - in other words, He made them physical bodies. And he promised them death, which was far preferable than the kind of death they were supposed to receive for sinning, the kind the fallen angels chose. Physical death was a cheat, and no doubt infuriated Satan, who thought he had ensnared the whole human race. But physical death is no picnic, and the disembodied Adam and Eve were still not able to go to Heaven without some sort of salvation, something that repaired their souls.

They were sick and needed a spiritual transplant.

And like an AIDS infected mother passing the disease along to her children Adam and Eve passed this disease along to the rest of us. Yes, this was part of God's plan all along, but it was no fun. And we still needed the cure.

Which put the Almighty in another pickle. How to deal with open sinners, people who acted like jerks, and still maintain the high standards that the unfallen had to maintain? Mercy is a virtue but too much of it is a vice. We all understand this; letting a serial rapist off with a warning only guarantees another woman will be raped. That is no longer mercy. But how do you draw the line? God stopped speaking directly to Humanity because of Sin; He had to, or He was a hypocrite and Satan would make sure to use that against Him. God began judiciously speaking to sinners; Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, etc. He told them what He expected and gave them the Law to help guide them. But God knew full well the Law was unfollowable by a decadent and corrupt Humanity. And of course Satan and the other fallen angels kept tempting Man; it was the only weapon they had to use against God. They were angry at Him for not giving them a second chance, even though they knew exactly what they were doing when they chose their fate, something Humanity did not. (The fallen angels wanted to have their cake and eat it too; go their own way but have all the benefits of a relationship with God. In short, they wanted to be co-Gods with Him. God would forgive them if they would repent, but none of them ever will because long ago they chose themselves over everyone and everything else.)

Something had to be done to save Mankind. As matters stood nobody was getting out of hell.

And what better way could God show His love to us than to do the job Himself?

Soren Kierkegard, the great Danish philosopher and Christian apologist, compared this situation to a king who falls in love with a lowly maiden. He wants her to love him in return but can find no way to know if she loves him or his wealth and power. There is, of course, only one answer; he abdicates his throne, gives away all his money, and goes to her a pauper. Now she either loves him or does not, but he knows it is a true love.

So God incarnated a part of Himself, becoming not just a man but a rather lowly one at that. Jesus was a Nazorean - a hillbilly from the country. Nazoreans were the equivalent of Arkansas woodsmen or West Virginia coal miners; they were looked down on by the rest of the Israelites. Jesus clearly fit into the "basket of deplorables" Hillary disdained. He was a country rube, a guy with no pedigree (although he was related to King David it wasn't much to crow about) and had no formal education. Nobody would ever dream he would be called "sir" much less Lord.

Now Jesus' mother was a very holy young woman, and in Catholic teaching she had Original Sin waived as a gift from God so He would not be born in a sinful body. (Protestants disagree with the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which says Mary was born sinless - not Jesus alone.) In Scripture it was said that a virgin would conceive and bear a child, and the Archangel Gabriel told Mary that was going to be her. Now a teenage girl betrothed to a young man as was Mary to Joseph was not going to be believed when she said the Holy Spirit impregnated her, and the embarrassment in an honor culture like the Israelites had must have been horrendous. The Gospels say Joseph wanted to dump her, but he had a dream telling him to go forward with the marriage. Imagine that! Joseph knew HE hadn't been doing anything to get his fiancé' pregnant! But he went through with it anyway.

One wonders if that isn't why Mary went with Joseph to Bethlehem during the census; she was getting along and it was perhaps thought better she have the baby away from wagging tongues in Galilee? I don't know if she had to come or not, but it was a terribly trying trip, with so many people in town she had to sleep in a cold dirty stable and give birth to the Messiah.

It is hard to follow God. It's supposed to be.

I like to compare life to a tournament where you are deciding your standing. Most people want to win, but you have to really work at it if you do. There are some who, upon being challenged, take their ball and go home. These are some who loaf about, content with just watching the pageant. And then there are those serious about winning. Your place in eternity is decided by how you approach the tournament. Mary, the mother of Jesus, took the terrible suffering she was dealt with quiet acceptance and so won the place highest in creation, far above Lucifer, who had been given the greatest gifts but who threw them away in his pride. It must gall the old devil that a peasant woman towers above him in Creation! But Mary said yes when Satan said no, and the end result is she was exalted while he was laid low. And he will be laid much lower in the future as the universe winds down and he is forced to live with himself and his destructive meddling forever.

Jesus came into the world to die, as do we all, but His death was special, because he did nothing to deserve it and was made to suffer horrible anyway. He took on the suffering of all of us and as a result was able to break the barrier between God and Man, the one Man imposed on himself. It was a rescue mission. And while Jesus' words were important they were not the critical aspect of His coming. Barack Obama said he was a great admirer of Jesus because He was a "great teacher". That misses the whole point of the story! It wasn't the words that mattered but the act, a supreme act of love for a bunch of ingrates.

Do I understand it fully? No, but that only increases my belief, because if I understood it fully I would have to dismiss the Divine nature of it. The workings of God are a mystery to me because I am not quite in His league. He devised this plan before ever creating anything at all. I've only been around for a few years, and have a brain that weighs just a few pounds. If I understood this I wouldn't feel comfortable at all with the veracity of my faith.

Why is faith so important? That is another atheist complaint, that we should be able to understand. The atheist philosopher Bertrand Russell famously quipped "Were I to meet God I would ask Him why did he hide himself so?" and Russell thinks this was some great damaging philosophical point, when in reality it is little more than a naughty child asking why he has to go to school, or eat his broccoli. God hides Himself because a.we don't deserve to see Him and b.it would invalidate the whole project. God showing himself would be like a teacher giving you the answers to a test. That is not what the teacher is there for. The teacher is there to help you learn, so you can answer the questions on the test yourself. If he gives you the answers you just copy them to pass then forget them all. You never LEARNED anything. Life is about our learning to live, learning to love, learning to do what is right even when we would rather not. Faith is vitally important because without it we stop trying to grow, or if we continue trying to grow it is in the wrong direction. Cancer cells try to grow, too, but wind up being deadly to the body. Proof of God would be like that. It would tamper with our free will, our right to choose, our walking a path that we may not like but which we trust is correct.

Imagine if we were to know God existed for a fact. Nobody would sin, which seems to be a good thing, but then nobody would have a choice in the matter either and in the end Heaven would be a worthless prize, something not so much earned but given. It would be a participation trophy! Our place in eternity would be fixed, with no sense of accomplishment or success.

It is horrible that some people choose to go to hell (and that is precisely what they do) but it would be worse if everyone were forced to be happy like it or not. That is what so many of our Progressive friends seek, an enforced conviviality, and it is soul-crushing.

No, we are free people because we have a choice. If we choose to be miserable than at least it is our own decision. God wants us to choose otherwise, but He isn't going to force us. If we knew for a fact we would be forced, made to act against our will.

So faith is vital to our eternal happiness. God fulfilled that faith when He sent Jesus to save us.

THAT is the miracle of Christmas, the thing we celebrate. It is not about gifts and parties and eggnog, nor about charity or good works. We do those things in memory of Jesus, but in the end Christmas was the beginning of Calvary, and the Resurrection which validated the whole thing. It was the salvation of us all, and it started with a virgin birth.

So a very Merry Christmas to all! Even you, my separated brethren, be ye atheist or Muslim or what have you; the miracle of Christmas is still yours for the taking.

Merry Christmas!

California to require Solar

Timothy Birdnow

California, in it's bid to blacken every light in the state, is soon to require every commercial property to have solar panels and batteries.

At a time of rising inflation and an inability to get help they are going to dump a major cost on businesses. Brilliant!
