Strong Job Growth

Timothy Birdnow

Good numbers on the job front.

From Fox zzznews:

U.S. employers added 164,000 jobs in July, right in line with Wall Street's expectations — a fairly unnoteworthy number, but evidence that the record-long economic expansion is continuing to chug along at a healthy pace.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 3.7 percent, near a 50-year-low, while the labor force participation rate was also little unchanged at 63 percent. Average hourly earnings, meanwhile, rose by 8 cents to $27.98. Over the year, average hourly earnings have increased by 3.2 percent, slightly beating expectations of 3.1 percent growth but continuing to disappoint.

For an economy with historically low unemployment, wage growth continues to fall short of expectations. It's not a new development for the U.S. economy, however: Since 1979, productivity has risen six times faster than hourly compensation for the typical U.S. worker. Plus, analysts caution that the greatest salary gains are going to already high-earning employees.

Professional wrestler Harley Race has passed away. he was 76.

From the Fox2 News article3:

TROY, Mo. – Harley Race, the tough-talking, Missouri-born professional wrestler who rose to national prominence over three-plus decades, has passed away. He was 76. His official Twitter account says, "Today at 12:50, we lost the man that fought up until the very last of his existence. More information will be released soon, but just know that he loved pro-wrestling and the fans that loved him. Harley Race, we love you.”

Race was born to sharecropper parents in the small town of Quitman in northwest Missouri in April 1943. As a pro wrestler, he’d be billed from Kansas City.

He began training as a teenager and started his career in the early 1960s and married his sweetheart Vivian Jones at age 18. Unfortunately, they were involved in a severe car accident one month after the wedding. Jones, who was pregnant at the time, died the crash. Race nearly had his leg amputated as a result and was told he’d likely never walk again.

After several months of physical therapy and recovery, Race returned to ring, traveling across the country and honing his craft wrestling for the famed Funk family in Texas and Verne Gagne’s AWA promotion. He’d achieve his greatest popularity competing in the National Wrestling Alliance, feuding with fellow wrestling luminaries like the Funk brothers (Terry and Dory Jr.), Dusty Rhodes, and "Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

I used to go to the wrestling matches at Kiel Auditorium when I was in high school. A friend had a father who was with the athletic commission, and he got free front row seats. It was a blast; we could actually speak to the wrestlers and they would answer us. That's how close we were! Front row! If someone fell out of the ring you could get hurt; they'd land on top of you. And we could see just how fake the "sport" really was, watch these guys communicate with each-other about what they were going to do next. A couple of times I saw one of them get mad, but usually it passed, after a rather subtle apology. As my friend said, if the cops come down then you know it's out of control.

Anyway, it was fun and Harley Race was always one of my favorites. He always looked half drunk and was a hillbilly besides.

Once some kids hit him with snowballs after a match and he smacked them, winding up in jail for that. I wish I had been there to see that one!

It was fun. I once yelled at Dick the Bruiser (part of the fun was razzing these guys) and he gave me a look that withered me where I stood. I'll never forget it!

So the loss of Race is a rather sad thing to me; kind of like losing a part of my youth. Godspeed Harley!

Race died  of cancer.

Arguing with Idiots: Climate Change Edition III

Timothy Birdnow

I continue my argument with a global warming buffoon. She replied to my comment on Facebook:

Timothy Birdnow --

Everything you've said is wrong.
1. Science is NOT actually about "debating those annoying little things". Science is about building and organizing knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the world we live in.
2. Most of the billionaires who are investing in fossil fuels are conservatives. Jeff Bezos, for example, is a conservative. Google it, you'll see.
3. The blog you read that said that the 97% figure came from some questionnaire is wrong. According to NASA, "Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree: Climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities."

Schumer Calls for Amending First Amendment to Limit Political Speech

Dana Mathewson

Let's do everything in our power to prevent Chuckie Schumer from becoming Senate Majority Leader! Why? Well, because

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D.-N.Y., has determined there is too much political speech in the United States coming from sources he cannot tolerate. So, he stood in front of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, along with Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D.-Ill., to announce he is backing Democratic New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall's proposal to amend the First Amendment.

The First Amendment — as it now stands — includes 10 unambiguous words about freedom of speech.

"Congress," it says, "shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech."

Schumer and Udall do not like this sweeping restraint on government power. There are speakers whose speech they want to abridge. The Bill of Rights — as correctly interpreted by the Supreme Court — stands in their way. So, they are seeking to change it.

Specifically, in 2010, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission that Americans enjoy the freedom of speech not only when they act as individuals but also when they form corporations.

In other words, a movie-making company has the same right to free speech as its owners individually do.

The same can be said for a book publishing company — or a company that manufactures lawnmowers or fishing rods.

In the United States, they all enjoy a freedom of speech that Congress "shall make no law" that abridges it.

For Schumer, this principle, which the court upheld in Citizens United, is gravely wrong.

"Few decisions in the 200 and some odd years of this republic have threatened our democracy like Citizens United," Schumer said on Tuesday.

"If I get to be majority leader with the help of my colleagues here and all of you, Citizens United will go. It must," he said.

"Overturning Citizens United," Schumer said, "is probably more important than any other single thing we could do to preserve this great and grand democracy."

It was not Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito or even John Roberts who wrote the court's opinion in Citizens United. It was Anthony Kennedy.

"The court has recognized that First Amendment protection extends to corporations," Kennedy wrote.

"If the First Amendment has any force, it prohibits Congress from fining or jailing citizens, or associations of citizens, for simply engaging in political speech," he said.

Elections have consequences. I believe that no matter how hard Schumer may try to get the First Amendment changed, he will not succeed. But in today's political climate, you never know. At any rate, this article is Required Reading! https://townhall.com/columnists/terryjeffrey/2019/08/01/schumer-calls-for-amending-first-amendment-to-limit-political-speech-n2550952

Biden and Booker threats to punch out Trump no laughing matter

Dana Mathewson

The great Victor Davis Hanson provides this Fox News opinion piece.

Former Vice President Joe Biden has bragged on two occasions that he would like to beat up President Trump.

In March 2018, Biden huffed: "They asked me would I like to debate this gentleman, and I said no. I said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.”

Biden’s tough-guy braggadocio was apparently no slip. A year later, he doubled down on his physical threats.

"The idea that I’d be intimidated by Donald Trump? ... He’s the bully that I’ve always stood up to. He’s the bully that used to make fun when I was a kid that I stutter, and I’d smack him in the mouth.”

Had former Vice President Dick Cheney ever dared to say something similar of President Obama, what would the media reaction have been?

Biden? Beat up Trump? Excuse me, but only in his wildest dreams would that happen!

Sen. Corey Booker, D-N.J., another presidential candidate, took up where Biden left off.

"Trump is a guy who you understand he hurts you, and my testosterone sometimes makes me want to feel like punching him, which would be bad for this elderly, out-of-shape man that he is if I did that. This physically weak specimen," Booker said.

One trait of the Democratic field of presidential candidates is always to sound further to the left than any of their primary rivals. Apparently, a similar habit is to see who can most effectively imagine beating up the president. For now, Booker seems to be in first place.

Excuse me again, but the president doesn't appear to be out-of-shape to me. I've watched him on his televised rallies, and it takes a lot of stamina to do what he does. I have the feeling he'd mop the floor with Booker!
The current candidates are just channeling three years of sick showboating by Hollywood celebrities.
And you're urged to read the article for the examples of the sick showboating -- which are exactly that.
[...]

This is especially dangerous in the aftermath of progressive zealot and Bernie Sanders supporter James Hodgkinson’s 2017 attempt to assassinate Republican congressmen at a practice for a charity baseball game. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot and nearly killed. Three other people were also shot and wounded.

[...]

Nonetheless, the current climate is becoming scary. Those who brag of wanting to violently attack the president should worry about where their boasts will finally lead if any of the thousands of James Hodgkinsons in America take such threats seriously and act upon them.
Am I cynical if I say perhaps that's exactly what the left wants, hoping if it happens they can finally push their dreams of firearms registration, leading to total firearms confiscation, on a "softened-up" electorate? Pray it never happens, and resist their attempts with all your might! Remember, elections have consequences!

Liar! Robots and Dufi

Timothy Birdnow

It's official; the Left has flipped its wig.

Robot racism? Yes, says a study showing humans' biases extend to robots

From the insane musings of CNN:

"Robots And Racism," a study conducted by the Human Interface Technology Laboratory in New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) and published by the country's University of Canterbury, suggests people perceive physically human-like robots to have a race and therefore apply racial stereotypes to white and black robots.

These colors have been found to trigger social cues that determine how humans react to and behave toward other people and also, apparently, robots.

"The bias against black robots is a result of bias against African-Americans," lead researcher Christoph Bartneck explained to The Next Web. He told CNN, "It is amazing to see how people who had no prior interaction with robots show racial bias towards them."

It never occurs to these morons that robots are built out of white plastic because it costs less. And NASA and others use white to make robots easier to keep cool. But I am interrupting a good leftist rant here:

"Imagine a world in which all Barbie dolls are white. Imagine a world in which all the robots working in Africa or India are white. Further imagine that these robots take over roles that involve authority. Clearly, this would raise concerns about imperialism and white supremacy," Bartneck told CNN. "Robots are not just machines, but they represent humans."

I can hear the clank of spittle dropping into tin cups here.

First, robots are entirely machines; we do not have self-aware computers, and these gadgets are sometimes made to look human but in reality they seldom do. Nobody is fooled by them. Nobody places them in a position of authority, as this lame-brain says.

How did they determine all this? They don't really give the methodology here, but they do say they had a "shooter test" which showed people and robots and that black robots got shot by the test subjects for apparently holding a weapon more than the white robots (nothing was said about the black and white people who appeared onscreen). So what? People are more apt to notice the black robot, because it stands out in terms of color. It has nothing to do with race.

Race has nothing to do with color, for that matter. Europeans saw black people as barbarians, largely because they were living under stone-age conditions when the the first Europeans made contact with them. Ditto the "brown people" in India and the Americas, who appeared to European eyes to be primitive - even though in many cases they were quite advanced, as in India. It was not the color of their skins but the way they lived and their level of societal and technological advancement. It was a horrible case of prejudgement, something that the Christian heritage of Europe should have precluded, but it was natural, just as the Chinese saw all non-Chinese as barbarians. (BTW, the Europeans saw the Asiatics in the same light and they are not black. Many aren't even a shade of brown.)

In modernity there is prejudice because many African Americans are poorly educated and behave in a manner that seems anti-social to many whites. It has nothing to do with skin pigmentation.

So the stupidity of saying robots are discriminated against based on color is beyond belief.

This is an example of cargo cult science, fake science. There is a conclusion that the researchers want to provide evidence in favor of, and they then work their way backwards to produce "research" that buttresses their claims.

As Sheldon Cooper said of Psychology on the Big Bang Theory "it has once again proven itself the dufus of Science".
