Sympathy for all our cold New York State friends

Dana Mathewson

Let the record show that Martha and I left New York State due to the machinations of this governor's father, who was also governor.

From Powerline.

You have to read down a ways into this article before the New York State part shows up.

The Triumph of the Will Reborn

Fay Voshell
(This appeared first at American Thinker)

Nuremberg, Germany is faced with a problem: what to do with the decaying monuments of the Third Reich, including Zeppelinfeld, the huge stadium that saw the Nazi rallies of the 1930s.

The restoration of the colossal and wordless testament to Nazism's power continues to present a dilemmato the citizens of Nuremberg. Some think the ruins should be preserved as a warning for future generations; others believe that the whole complex should be allowed to disintegrate. more...

Assuming you can bear to go back to this . .

Dana Mathewson

Remember when FBI Director Comey said Hillary wouldn't be prosecuted on the "mishandled" e-mail situation because she "had no intent to harm the country?" And we were up in arms because "intent" has nothing to do with it, because we ourselves would be rotting in prison for doing the same thing, intent or no intent? Well, Power Line's Scott Johnson has a nice article wherein he inserts Andrew McCarthy's take on the whole thing, here.

Sounds as if Comey was preparing his own defense all along.

Pithy Quote

Dana Mathewson

Reading the responses to today's Day By Day, I found one you all will appreciate. I'm sure I didn't send it already. We're all familiar with "For evil to triumph, it is is necessary for good men to do nothing," or something like that. Well, how about:
Or as the redoubtable Kurt Hoffmann put it, "Evil exists because good men don’t kill the government officials committing it.”

December Employment Slump Masks Massive Economic Boom

Timothy Birdnow

The Patriot Post has an article discussing a December decline in economic growth. According to the article:

"December’s jobs report was underwhelming, particularly when compared to recent months. For example, 252,000 jobs were generated in November, but December saw just 148,000 — a month-over-month reduction of 104,000 and about 42,000 fewer than economists’ expectations, according to CNBC. At 4.1%, the headline unemployment rate remained static, though the U-6 rate, a better measure, ticked up to 8.1% from 8%. Most of the jobs report blame is being pegged on the retail industry, which fell by roughly 20,000 jobs, and that certainly makes sense as brick and mortar stores are still grappling with Internet sales. But other factors may be at play.

While the jobs numbers failed to meet economists’ expectations, there was one person who anticipated the possibility of a lackluster report. On Nov. 30, meteorologist and Patriot Post contributor Joe Bastardi warned, "Caution: December Weather May Cause Skidding of the Economy.” Americans were accustomed to unseasonable warm Decembers in recent years, but Bastardi foresaw a major change this time around. He wrote, "The potential for more extreme cold between Dec. 10 and Jan. 10 has us very concerned.” In fact, his research revealed that the coming cold "would have a huge effect on the economy in almost all sectors from the Plains and areas east.”"

End excerpt.

Fair enough. Please notice I
observed that the Christmas sales weren't all they were cracked up to be.
I was derided in many conservative circles for this, but I was right. And I laid the blame squarely on the media and the Progressives who led a war on Chrismas this last year. But Joe Bastardi is correct in claiming the cold weather played a part. more...

Andrew Klavan -- The Wolff Book Proves It: Our Journalists Stink

Dana Mathewson

Yeah, as usual, Andrew gets it. All of it.
The self-destruction of Steve Bannon is a terrific story but not an important story. That is, for those of us who love politics for its Shakespearean revelation of character on the grand stage, it's an amazing farewell-to-all-my-greatness moment. But if you are concerned about the threats to liberty at home and abroad, the prosperity of our fellow Americans and allies, and the positive developments — like fresh space exploration — that might emerge from a new American century, well, Steve don't matter much. Or at all.

But Bannon's fall, and the scandal-mongering book that helped it along — Michael Wolff'sFire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House— do underscore one thing of real importance: our mainstream journalists are genuinely awful. They will sell any narrative they can to keep from selling the one that seems increasingly likely to be true:Trump is smarter than they are and doing a better job than the last two presidents combined.[Emphasis mine]

He goes on to provide some great examples. The article is here:https://pjmedia.com/andrewklavan/wolff-book-proves-journalists-stink/

Civilizational Death and Brain Tumors

Dana Mathewson forwards this article by the incomparable Spengler:

From the article:

The democracy first practiced by the Greek city-state is exceptional, and classical Greece is Exhibit A for civilizational self-destruction. Of the nearly 150,000 languages once spoken on this planet, a couple of thousand are left, and 90% of those will fall silent forever during the next century or so. Sometimes the best thing you can do for dying civilizations is, don't be one of them, as I wrote in my 2011 book, How Civilizations Die.

This makes the mullahs all the more dangerous, like a bank robber with a brain tumor who takes hostages. I sincerely wish a happy outcome for the people of Persia. But we need to be prepared for a very unhappy one.

Sun Tzu and the Trump/Bannon Feud

Timothy Birdnow

Donald Trump and Steve Bannon are going at it like a pair of kindergarteners, and much is being made about the silliness. But is this what it appears?

First, Breitbart, Steve Bannon's publication, is still cheerleading for the Trumpster, which is odd given the viciousness of recent tit-for=tat comments by the President and his former adviser. If this were a serious breech between the two I would expect Breitbart to turn against Trump as well. That they are still quite supportive suggests to me we are seeing a tactical deception.

Chinese military philosopher Sun Tzu stated thousands of years ago: more...

Why Capping State and Local Tax Deductions was a Bad Idea

Timothy Birdnow

Radio talk show host Mark Levine has Republican heads exploding with his argument against the changes made to tax law ending deductions for some state and local taxes. Ed straker at American Thinker argues most vociferously against Levin's complaint.

From the article:

"The new tax bill puts a $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, and Levin, who probably pays the top rate of 5.75% in Virginia (plus property taxes), which, given his income, probably amounts to a lot more than $10,000, feels that it is unfair not to be able to deduct such payments from federal taxes.

He points out that while someone making $100,000 in Maryland may pay lower federal taxes than someone making $100,000 in Texas, the Maryland taxpayer also has to pay a lot of state income tax that the person living in Texas doesn't."

End except.

He then goes on to call these deductions a subsidy for Blue States and argues they are inherently unfair.

He continues: more...

People Mag Scrubs Pornographic Image to Hide Hypocrisy

Selwyn Duke

Like most media reporting on the story, People magazine presented disgraced teacher Mateo Rueda in a flattering light. He was recently fired from Lincoln Elementary School in Hyrum, Utah for showing young children nude "artwork."He's actually, we're to believe, an intrepid martyr persecuted by prudish, uncultured rubes who can't distinguish between porn and fine art.To prove its point, People printed a couple of the pictures shown to the fifth- and sixth-graders, one of which is a full-frontal female nude titled "Iris Tree."

Only People obscured the woman's nipples and nether region.

Apparently, adult readers shouldn't see what the children saw.

Now the magazine is trying to obscure the truth. After I and others called People out on Twitter – I wrote, "If the 'artwork' Iris Tree really is appropriate for 10-year-olds, why are you blurring out part of the picture in your article?" – the image completely disappeared from the piece.

"Local" idiot

Dana Mathewson

Note: This nutcase is a Minneapolis product, not a Minnesota product. There is a difference. And while some people believed he was a possibility to head the DNC after the last presidential election, and while one friend of mine (who shall remain nameless in order to protect his reputation) thought he was in line to replace Al Frankengroper (I myself had never seen any such speculation), it seems he's not gotten anywhere except to continue to represent his (almost total Somali) district of Minneapolis. But he can certainly do enough damage there.

Coulter Rips Franken

Jack Kemp

"Money quotes:"

Which reminds me: That's exactly what Newt Gingrich said about the charge -- repeated by Franken ceaselessly, endlessly, relentlessly and ubiquitously -- that he'd served divorce papers on his wife when she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery.
This claim came from Gingrich's ex-wife. It was denied by Gingrich. Now I don't know who's telling the truth, but I note that there's no expression: "As reliable as testimony given by parties in a bitter divorce dispute!"

RIP June Foray the Voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel

Frostbite Falles (International Falls, MN) lives up to its name. It is -33 degrees today. It's plus 24 degrees with blowing snow in NY City now. I'm staying indoors today.

It was noted online that voice actress June Foray, the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Natasha Fatale and many, many other cartoon characters, passed away in 2017 at age 99. She was working doing voices until age 96.

June Foray was "Awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7080 Hollywood Blvd. on July 7, 2000."

The right to mobility: How the left is violating our fundamental liberty by refusing our right to drill for oil

Timothy Birdnow

(Here's an archival article from 2008 that dovetails with Dana's article on self driving cars below.)

When the Bill of Rights was introduced to the U.S. Constitution, an argument erupted over the need for amendments specifically enumerating the rights of Americans. The Constitution states quite plainly that any powers not expressly granted to the United States government are reserved to the States and the People. In short, there should have been no need to enumerate rights; they were granted not by men but by God, after all, and the Constitution made it plain that America's central government was to be seriously circumscribed.

Autonomous vehicles are about to collide with the American way

Dana Mathewson

I very much like the writing -- and thinking -- of Charles C. W. Cooke. I first became acquainted with his articles in "America's 1st Freedom," one of the NRA's monthly magazines, wherein he writes about how America's long tradition of keeping and bearing arms has come about. He's the editor of National Review, and is one of those people with whom I'd love to attend a party with. I really like how he's structured liberal "argument" in this article much the same as their "reasoning" in the gun control debate. more...
