Where have all the Wasps gone?

Timothy Birdnow

On Facebook a friend mentioned she has seen no bees this year. It got me to thinking:

I have a cabin I built in the Ozarks and haven't seen any down there. Only saw one wasp, too, which is VERY unusual; I'm usually overrun by them. (Not complaining about that last, but it sure is odd.)

Odd indeed. Has it been too cold for bees/wasps? Is something else in the wind? Perhaps some sort of magnetic effect that has them all hunkered down? I haven't seen any wasp's nests anywhere at the Ozark Hilton, either.

Sure is strange.

1 'Bout three months ago, maybe less, I was on my morning dog walk and saw a bumblebee, and realized I hadn't seen one of those critters in a long time, mebbe three years or more.

And don't give me that garbage about global warming. The summers here are by-and-large the same as when I came here in 1994. One may be hotter than the others, and then there'll be one cooler than the others. That's called "climate," kids! I lived through exactly the same kind of variations back in Western New York when I was growing up in the late 1940s - 1950s. Nice summers interspersed by a scorcher. Folks all said "Oh, well. . ."

4 It clearly has nothing to do with global warming. We haven't had any - for decades now.

You may be right Bill!

5 And then there are the murder hornets. Don't forget the murder hornets! If we have them, they're probably all in the southern part of the state.

6 Good point Dana; maybe they are aggressive and the other stinging critters have been pushed out?  Like Kentucky Bass in a lake or river, once there Smallmouth and other cousins will disappear.
