The Race Card
Timothy Birdnow
KMOV, a local television station in St. Louis, posted this on Facebook:
The announcer had been providing public address announcements for about 20 years.
Oklahoma Game Announced Removed for 'disgusting' Comment
From the article:
An Oklahoma high school basketball game announcer was removed after calling the names of the opposing team's players " disgusting ." NEWKIRK, Okla. ... We sincerely apologize for any pain or affront our announcer's comment has caused Crooked Oak players, parents, patrons, and school employees,†according to the statement.
Fair enough. But the message board was full of rather angry rants about white racism. I responded to one, which started a bit of a row.
Let me reproduce the thread:
Pierre:
Why else would you say someones name in disgusting, he didn't make a
mistake, he said exactly what he was thinking regardless if he ment to
say it or not. How is ones name disgusting? Would be understandable if
the girls names were hot turd, or sackwart, something along the line of
disgusting. His comment was motivated buy the creative way that our
community chooses to name our off spring, which would make his comment
racially motivated. The problem with most white folks, when these
things happen, their's a feeling of guilt that sets in, knowing what
the actions of their ancestors were so they cant help but to go on the
defensive. Were not saying you as an individual person is responsible.
We just want every Good hearted human being to have a problem with it
too! And stop trying to tell us that we're not justified in our
feelings when these types of things happen!
Brian S. stated:
White folk? Really? I don't think I have ever referred black people as
black folk, to me that would be kind of offensive. But heck, today it
seems that ""White folk"" are being blamed for everything, from
patriarchy to sneezing. For some reason we are suppose to be segregated
and colleges now insult white people and it's suppose to be okay. Rich
Hollywood actors and sports figures go on film and TV and say how
blacks and POC are being controlled and such when these things are so
false. Yes, there is some racist out there, but when these so called
Liberal Hollywood and sport figures say whites are controlling others,
this is so false
I replied:
It's not some sort of guilt Pierre Morgan but rather we "white folks"
are sick of being blamed for the insecurities of you black folks. So
often there is a mad scramble to find racism lurking around every
corner. Well, it's true from both sides! There is as much black racism
as white in America, and maybe more because nobody wants to call it for
what it is.
BTW, in case you are unawares, it was black tribal
leaders who sold prisoners of war to the Arab slave traders who then
sold them to the white ship captains on the coast. And the first slave
holder in America was a black man who argued in court that an
indentured servant was his property, not just a contract worker. And
there were numerous black slaveholders in America. In fact, the largest
slave holder in Louisiana prior to the Civil War was a black man. So
don't lay this huge guilt trip on whites; there was plenty of blame to
go around.
Laura replied:
Timothy Birdnow I know...those Black people are so insecure...it’s
almost like they’ve spent generations being treated as "less than†to
the degree that actual laws were made dictating where they could drink
water or sit on public transportation.
And even though we had a Black president, which clearly indicated
racism is over, Black people are still being targeted by things like
mass incarceration and police brutality and inexcusably high maternal
and infant mortality rates...How dare they...
To which I responded:
Laura, I don't see the Irish carrying these same grudges
in America, or the Italians, or any other group that had a rough go of
it. We don't judge people based on what their fathers did in America. I
guess you missed that in your public education. And as for mass
incarceration perhaps the black community should look to clean up it's
own act and police it's own members. They are the ones committing most
of the crimes. It's time to grow up.
William added:
Laura your people are treated the way they are because of the majority still
wants till live that thug life. Not only that but they are being raised
with a mentality that everyone is out to get them
Laura replied:
I am actually white, but can see the reality of what is happening to
Black Americans. I think you referring to them as "my people†is quite
telling of how many of the folks who share your outdated, racist, and
ignorant mindset contribute to the ongoing systematic racism in this
country.
William replied:
Laura att this point in time it’s the culture they cling to. pointing out
problems they refuse to deal with because of their own racism isn’t
racist but good try.
Laura addresses me again:
Timothy BirdnowI appreciate the analogy to other groups who have been persecuted, but
it isn’t the same thing. Racism is alive and well in this country
whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.
I replied:
As a white male I get put to the back of the line for jobs, for
admission into schools, for loans, etc. As a white male I'm told I am
the scum of the Earth and have a duty to shut up and confess guilt to
the world. White males are the only demographic that has a negative
life expectancy; white men are dying younger these days then they did.
Minorities get extra points on civil service exams. Minorities get
preferences in hiring in big cororations, and in colleges and
universities. But we are privileged, yes ma'am!
As for racism
being alive and well, who was it who actually changed things in
America? It wasn't black people who somehow seized these changes. It
was white Americans who felt bad about how their fathers had treated
blacks and other minorities and who passed changes to the laws to give
the black community a fair shake. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 wasn't
somehow passed by minorities. And yes there is racism in America, but I
see it on both sides. In fact, there may well be more on the side of
"color". Here is one example.

R0YdoqUMBut that doesn't make national news and there are no hate crimes
charges (another example of white privilege as hate crimes laws are
just an extra protection given to minorities that do not apply to white
people.)
Jennifer tosses in her two cents:
Timothy Birdnow Every "struggle" you listed has been what every other
marginalized group has been going through forever at the hands of white
men. Could it be possible that you're last in line for jobs because you
lack skills? We are much more of a social society and your
communication skills are terrible. You seem to blame everyone else for
your mistakes which is counter productive in an adult work environment.
I wouldn't hire you. Schools would also look at this temperament and
your intelligence so perhaps that's the reason. And exactly who is
calling you the scum of the Earth? White males dying early might derive
from always having someone else do things for them. The white
patriarchy is cracking, thankfully, so I find it logical that they are
unable to function on their own. Do better Timothy and you might
attract better. No more whining.
I reply:
Jennifer, the point is that nobody has a monopoly on being discriminated
against, and white males are clearly being discriminated against now.
Two wrongs don't make a right. And I'M not the one doing the
complaining, just pointing this fact out. You cannot deny there is
affirmative action and "race norming" in government hiring practices,
as well as in most corporations. These are facts. This is
discrimination,
whether you
want to call it that or not. As to the remainder of your rant you are
clearly a delusional person. Show me the data that proves blacks or
Hispanics or others are better educated or more intelligent or do
better in schools. You can't. (It actually is true of Asian Americans,
but they are also discriminated against these days.) You have nothing
but a meme and no substance to back up your argument. Oh, and I'm
hardly in the job market these days; this has nothing to do with me
personally. I am discussing the false claim of white privilege and
pointing out that the reality is there is minority privilege. But you
seem to miss the point.
A woman named Samaria also chimes in:
Timothy Birdnow if it makes you feel better, I get put to the back of
the line for jobs because I have a "foreign†name, i didn’t get a
single scholarship for being black, and it’s proven that financial
institutions have inherent biases towards those who look like me. As a
black person, I’m told I’m the scum of the earth and have a duty to
shut up and confess guilt for the crimes other black people commit. As
a black woman, I’m less likely to receive adequate healthcare. I’m not
entirely sure what advantages I’ve gotten for being black, since I
never put my race on applications, but sorry people didn’t hire you. I
get that feeling. It sucks.
Would you like me to thank white
people for ending segregation? Is that what you’d like to hear? Are you
upset because MLK didn’t write a thank you note? I do think some of the
rhetoric towards straight white men is inflammatory and rude, and I
understand you’re upset, but I’m not sure who your frustrations are
directed towards.
Also, I worked in media. Here’s a tip-if you
want certain stories to make the national news, you’ve got to make more
noise about them. They are not going to pick up a non-violent story
that no one outside of the immediate area is talking about.
I reply:
Samaria you received as much privilege as a black woman as any white man ever
has. Do not deny that. Or then admit that nobody gets some fabled
privilege that you are somehow getting cheated out of. That is the
point. You apparently haven't heard of affirmative action. Or race
norming.Or the United Negro College fund. Or any number of other
programs designed to give black people a leg up. I'm not complaining
about that, mind you, but I want to remind you of it before you accuse
white people of having this mysterious privilege. As for Martin Luther
King Jr. do you think he would have ever been heard from had America
been so against black people? He would have been arrested and sent away
for good in most countries, or even killed. Instead he became a hero. I
am not saying there was no racism in America, but I am saying this
country had a lot of good people in it who realized what we had been
doing was wrong AND I'm arguing that times have changed. You cannot
keep holding to the wounds of the past. Sadly that is what so many in
America want to do these days. Instead of moving forward together we
have endless recriminations and blame being assigned, and a demand that
those of us who were not alive during the bad times and had nothing to
do with it pay. Well, it doesn't work that way, at least not in America
where we are not held liable for the sins of our fathers. Or should
white America hold all blacks guilty for criminal activity on the part
of some of you? Are YOU upset that we didn't write you a letter of
apology for slavery and Jim Crow? Well, we didn't have anything to do
with that. any more than you are personally guilty of crimes by black
thugs. Did you murder the Kerry sisters? I don't blame you for it. So
why do you blame all white people for things that happened not even to
you but to your ancestors? I get it; you say there is still racism.
Perhaps, but wouldn't the obvious first response be to look into the
mirror? The black community demands contrition from whites and special
privileges for us to atone for things done by a previous generation.
But you offer no reconciliation in return. .
Jason adds:
Laura Fowler Watson no it actually doesn’t, but your proving your
absolute need to be right, and your refusal to see any other option to
the contrary of your beliefs. There are issues within every culture,
but it seems that only one is able to be discussed and anyone who tries
to bring to light any other issue outside of that culture is just a
"privileged white†"racist†"sexist†or whatever else derogatory put
down can be thrown out there. History needs to be learned about,
remembered, so that it will happen again, but to perpetually live in
the past prevents moving forward and past it for a better world.
Instead some would rather erase the past and forget about it, then in
turn continue to use it as excuse to not do better.
At any rate, I have to stop here. I imagine this is going to continue on for some time. I kicked a hornet's nest.

Pearls are organic
gemstones created inside the shells of mollusks. They are formed when an
irritant, such as a grain of sand, enters the shell and the mollusk secretes layers
of nacre around it. Pearls come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, and are
treasured for their beauty and elegance in jewelry and adornments.
