The Illusions of Global Warming

Timothy Birdnow

We have some Global Warming news this morning - and some related stories.

First, a paper in the Journal Nature tells us that we aren't seeing any atmospheric warming because...Antarctica is melting from global warming!

From Physorg:

"As the Antarctic ice sheet melts, warming of the atmosphere will be delayed by about a decade but sea level rise will accelerate, according to new research scheduled for advance online publication in the journal Nature.

The study is the first to project how the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet will affect future climate, said first author Ben Bronselaer of the University of Arizona, adding that current climate models do not include the effects of melting ice on the global climate.

The entire Earth will continue to warm, but the atmosphere will warm more slowly because more of the heat will be trapped in the ocean, he said

"Warming won't be as bad as fast as we thought, but sea level rise will be worse," said Bronselaer, a postdoctoral research associate in the UA Department of Geosciences.

Observations show that the Antarctic ice sheet has been melting faster in recent years." End excerpt.

First, Antarctica is not "melting faster in recent years"; in fact, Antarctica has been gaining ice mass overall. Only the West Antarctic sheet - which sits to a large degree on top of the sea - has been losing ice, and that because of volcanism underneath. East Antarctica has bean growing. It should also be pointed out that there is more sea pack ice then there used to be, too.

Second, this is nothing but a projection based on computer models. That has been the whole problem with climatology for the last thirty years; it places a higher emphasis on models than on actual observations.

Third, how can you have Global Warming without a warming atmosphere? Remember, the argument is that increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide will produce a "greenhouse effect" and will trap heat that would have moved back out into space. This absolutely necessitates a warming atmosphere. You cannot have ice melting without a warming atmosphere, because the heat is coming from reflected longwave radiation. In other words, it has to be warmer for the ice to melt in the first place.

Since it is NOT warmer, and since ice is actually not melting, how can you say we have Global Warming"

You can't, which is why these scientists have worked up this little bit of misdirection. It is what a stage magician does, get people looking in one direction so you can't see the sleight-of-hand. AGW theory is collapsing of it's own weight, and those with a vested interest in promoting the idea are desperate to come up with some trick to save it.

The article continues;

"Adding the melted ice into the team's model indicated that the global temperature would increase by 2 degrees C (3.6 F) by the year 2065, rather than the year 2053, the team writes."

To test that idea, Bronselaer ran a climate model with and without the ice- sheet melting included. The team included researchers from NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey and from Princeton University. The scientists used NOAA GFDL's climate model called ESM2M and tested the simulation over the time period from 1950 to 2100."

End excerpt.

See, a government project with every incentive to promote global warming theory.

It continues:

"Russell and Bronselaer were both surprised by their findings. They did not expect the Antarctic meltwater to affect the global climate system.

Ocean circulation moves heat from the equator to the poles. The heat is then released into the atmosphere, Russell said. However, the team's new research reveals that the additional freshwater from the melting ice sheet acts like a lid on the waters around Antarctica and slows the release of heat."

End excerpt.

So, the heat is going into the ocean, even though it's coming from heat trapped in a non-warming atmosphere. How does that work? If you have ice floating at the top of your glass of Bourbon and Seven Up you will find the drink stays cold below. See, there is no mechanism to move heat from the air to the bottom of your glass. Yes, it will be warmer below the ice but that is due to the glass radiating heat into the atmosphere and into your hand from below. On Earth you don't have that luxury.

This is just a way to keep the War of the Worlds scam alive.

For our second AGW piece, we learn that Nature is the real Greenhouse Gas emitter.

From the article:

"A study of Sólheimajökull glacier, which flows from the active, ice-covered volcano Katla, shows that up to 41 tonnes of methane is being released through meltwaters every day during the summer months. This is roughly equivalent to the methane produced by more than 136,000 belching cows.

The Lancaster university-led research, which is featured in Scientific Reports, is the first published field study to show methane release from glaciers on this scale"

End excerpt

And Methane may be a powerful greenhouse gas if it doesn't absorb oxygen first:

"Normally when methane comes into contact with oxygen it combines to form CO2, so the methane effectively disappears. On a glacier, meltwaters rich in dissolved oxygen access the bed of the ice mass and convert any methane present into carbon dioxide.'

End excerpt

So, the hysteria about methane among the Warmiacs is unjustified, it seems.

Finally, Scientists at Rutgers have worked out a way to turn CO2 into plastics.

From the article:

"The electrocatalysts are the first materials, aside from enzymes, that can turn carbon dioxide and water into carbon building blocks containing one, two, three or four carbon atoms with more than 99 percent efficiency. Two of the products created by the researchers—methylglyoxal (C3) and 2,3-furandiol (C4)—can be used as precursors for plastics, adhesives and pharmaceuticals. Toxic formaldehyde could be replaced by methylglyoxal, which is safer.

The discovery, based on the chemistry of artificial photosynthesis, is detailed in the journal Energy & Environmental Science."

End excerpt.

When the world hands you lemons...

IF carbon dioxide is warming the planet - something I don't admit - then the answer is not to limit industrial production but to turn this to our advantage. Oil was a waste material until someone figured out that it was a terrific lubricant and lamp fuel. Now we couldn't live without it; it is the backbone of our entire civilization. Penicillin started as a mold infestation of Ian Fleming's experiment. Wine was spoiled grape juice. History is full of examples of human ingenuity taking a problem and making it a solution. If we can scrub CO2 from factory smokestacks and make plastics, wouldn't that be a good thing?

Not to the radical environmentalists. Global Warming was a tool to rid humanity of industrial civilization, something that the Utopian Left sees as robbing them of paradise. Many of the Gang Green think we lived much better in a state of Nature than we do in a civilized society, and this idiotic belief is acted out by attempts to restrict industrial development, to restrict population growth, to move us back to a simpler time - one that they don't understand. In fact, we left that simpler time because it sucked. You were cold in winter, hot in summer, didn't have enough to eat at times, were subject to predation by animals and other humans and subject to illness. And there was little entertainment because you had to work all the time. It was not a better world in the "good old days". But the Utopian Left believes it was. That's because they don't believe in God and can't bear the thought that this is as good as it gets. In a world governed entirely by nature and Man they have to find a way to build paradise. The improvements of modern society don't seem the way to them, because they want it now and they don't like the fact that they have to work for it.

Lazy buggers.
