If ILA President Daggett shuts down the regular East Coast ports, what else could become available?
The
Chapel at the US Naval Academy honors Admiral Farragut's shutting down
Confederate blockade runners who had been exporting cotton to England
when the U.S. Admiral captured the Port of Mobile, Alabama in the Civil
War. Does the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard have enough ships and sailors
and BUDGET to stop goods from entering the U.S.? How great is the U.S.
doing in stopping the illegal importing of drugs? - I ask rhetorically.
Those drug runners must have access to some spare ships to bring in
other high profit goods.
During
Prohibition, a fellow named Joseph P. Kennedy illegally imported liquor
from Canada in trucks and from Scotland, often using high speed boats
the U.S. Coast Guard couldn't catch. That was one of Jimmy Hoffa's pet
peeves against Bobby Kennedy, i.e., his father's crooked business helped
finance the Kennedy's honest government crusades against Hoffa. And
Hoffa had a legitimate point.
Recently
there was a movie about the famed Dunkirk evacuation where many British
private boats and fishermen aided the Royal Navy in evacuating over
300,000 soldiers from the Belgian Coast.
In
1958, I saw the movie The Buccaneer in which the pirate Jean Lafite
combined forces with Gen. Andrew Jackson and local militias to defeat
the British invasion forces. One interesting part of the film was the
showing of how Lafite operated a duty free shopping plaza on one of the
many small uncharted islands outside New Orleans where he sold pirated
goods. He even arranged for small ships to bring his customers in from
New Orleans to his bargain island. In fact, Jean Lafite was a Jew and he
opened up what was arguably the first Shopping Mall. In the movie, the
daughters of upper class New Orleans loved to shop there for the latest
European styles - at a discount.
Americans
have a history of innovative ways to make money. Do you think various
major mobsters wouldn't go into a new "import-export" business if there
was big money in it? They already have much experience with importing
illegal drugs. Yes, poor and middle class Americans would have limited
access to this sea train - but they might get jobs in a new enterprise -
just as hard drug and pot dealers get work right now.
I
recall as a boy going to Rockefeller Center where the US Rubber Company
had a flagship showcase store/museum. One of the things on display were
models of transport submarines towing huge U.S. Rubber bags behind
them, full of oil or other commercial goods.
This
ILA president Daggett may get to feel very important for a while as he
also DESTROYS CHRISTMAS FOR MILLIONS, but it will be the Union's Last
Hurrah. I can hear those Boston Dynamics robots marching through the
gates of those East Coast Ports in a few years. And Biden will tell him
to learn to code a computer - for a new job in India.
(Posted by North-Central States editor Dana Mathewson -- whose uncle was one of the Coast Guard captains who chased, unsuccessfully, Joe Kennedy's "rum running" captains. Uncle Bill told about sitting at a bar once, next to a fellow who turned out to be a rum runner he'd been chasing earlier that day and who told him "You darn near caught me! If you'd just had a faster boat...")

FWIW China is on the board that employs the ILA members.Imagine a communist country bargaining with a commie labor union. Never fear because biden will send in kamala to save the day and her and prince timpon will bring the bully union to its knees.

I don't think Jack Kemp quite understands what is meant by the
"ILA shutting down the ports." It has nothing to do with a blockade, or with preventing ships from entering or leaving port. It has to do with longshoremen refusing to unload cargo from ships.

It's good to see you back here where you belong Jack!
BTW I was briefly a member of the Longshoreman's Union when I was young; worked for a grocer that couldn't get recognition from UFCW butt the longshoreman's recognized them.

Mike, I have been musing about this. I wonder if Kamala won't swoop in an "solve" this later this month, thus showing your "street cred". I have been suspicious that this whole thing is a setup from the get-go. Maybe I'm paranoid, but maybe this is some ploy to help get her elected?
Time will tell.

Martha listens to Clay and Buck on the way to rehearsal in the afternoon and to Joe Pags on the way home. She got home and told me "The strike has been settled. Give me a brandy!" I haven't picked up details yet, partly because our Dish network has just gifted us with a whole new layout that makes it darn near impossible to "run" our TV, and I'll have to call them tomorrow to get it straightened out (a call to them tonight would have put us on hold for 45 minutes). So I don't know what actually happened, but I imagine you're right and it was probably a bunch of legerdemain.

BTW, I'd sent Jack the link to just his article, and you can't access comments (dumb of me) and he told me to take care of any comments, so I re-sent the proper link and told him "your article, your responsibility" but obviously he hasn't jumped in yet.

I hadn't heard that Dana. Not surprised; this is an election year and if it hurts the Donkeys the Union won't do it. But if it helps.
Yeah; wish Jack would jump in.
