Stupor Bowl 52 saw a 3% decline in ratings from last years game show, and was the lowest in viewrship since 2009, despite a booming economy (which generally favors frivolity in the populace.) According to CNN Money
" The game, which saw the Eagles bring home their first Super Bowl trophy, brought in an average viewership of 103.4 million for NBC. That makes it the tenth-most watched program in U.S. television history. The viewership peaked at 112.3 million from 10 to 10:15 p.m. EST, near the end of the game.
The number is down 7% from the 111.3 million that tuned in for last year's Super Bowl, which saw the Patriots come back to beat the Atlanta Falcons. And it makes the game the least-watched Super Bowl since 2009."
End excerpt.
This despite the possibility of a record setting Patriots triumph as well as a record for QB Tom Brady, history in the making (had they won).
The article continues:
"The league saw its viewership dip roughly 10% overall this season. And broadcast TV as a whole has seen its numbers shrink this year as well, with its ratings typically falling more than the NFL's have."
End excerpt.
I boycotted it, except to flip it on for occasional updates, and I did wind up watching the last two minutes since it was in doubt. Funny; growing up, the Superbowl was rarely a good game, usually a blow out, and yet in the last decade or so it has been one of the best games of the season. Coincidence? I don't think so; the League clearly has taken steps to keep the game close. In that regard it is becoming increasingly like pro wrestling, a scripted affair. Maybe not fully scripted, but there clearly is an attempt to pick winners and losers and to manipulate the game. And we know for a fact that the New England Patriots have cheated on numerous occasions, stealing playbooks and planting clandestine surveillance that would make the Comey FBI jealous.
I'm surprised viewership wasn't even lower. And the NFL has it coming. Americans expect patriotism from our fellows, especially from those we bless with our hard earned cash. Insulting the National Anthem and by extension the entire country does not deserve to be blessed by us, or by the League that so wants our money.
