Putin's "justification" for taking Crimea from Ukraine is that Khrushchev "made a mistake" giving it to Ukraine. Below is a map of Ukraine in 1919.
Not only was Crimea part of Ukraine, but quite a bit of land to the east was also that Russia continues to claim.
Stealing land from other countries by conquest, genocide, and population replacement is nothing new for them. They've been doing it for centuries.
Tim replies:
Greg I don't disagree - especially with that part about Russia and land grabs. But I do quote this from the Wilson Center.

"Crimea was part of Russia from 1783, when the Tsarist Empire annexed it a decade after defeating Ottoman forces in the Battle of Kozludzha, until 1954"
Certainly the Crimean War (1853-6) was fought by Russia and Western allies against the Ottomans. Yes, Ukrainians were undoubtedly part of the coalition but it was understood they were part of the Tsar's empire.
In fact the region had been under the empire from the annexation of the Crimean khanate in 1783 after the Battle of Kozludzha. Catherine the Great first annexed it from the Khanate.
But of course they gave it to Ukraine in 1954 and thus had no right to simply invade and take it back. Using their logic Russia can take back Alaska from the U.S., Spain take Florida, Mexico take Texas and the whole southwest.

Yes, there were Russian troops in Crimea at the time. They were there pursuant to a treaty with Ukraine having to do with the naval base at Sevastapol, and they were restricted to base during the voting period.
The whole process is no different than the manner in which Hawaii and Alaska were admitted as states in the United States of America.
The United Nations has a "Right to Self Determination" clause, which is honored by most nations in the world, that allows the people in a region to vote their destiny. The United States honors that principle only when it suits us. We proclaimed it repeatedly when providing military support for Kosovo, but renounce it in the case of Crimea, claiming that Crimea does not have the right to determine its own future.
