Reparations? A Modest Proposal

Timothy Birdnow

An article at Conservative HQ delineates the plot by Democrats to impose slavery reparations on America. The author, George Rasley, hit the nail on the head with this.

From the article:

The bill, drafted by Democrat Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), would create a commission to look at a "national apology" for slavery and discrimination against African Americans, potentially including compensation, report The Hill’s Sarah Ferris and Caitlin Oprysko.

Jackson Lee’s bill received a hearing yesterday in the House Judiciary Committee — the chamber’s first hearing on reparations in a decade. The bill is expected to soon have a full committee markup, though Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) has not yet set a date. A floor vote would come after that reported Ferris and Oprysko.

This was followed by some quotes by academics who are pushing this. Again from the article:

Dr. Julianne Malveaux, an economist and former president of Bennett College, who has studied economic gaps between racial groups, particularly the wealth gap, for nearly 40 years said about reparations, "It’s an idea whose time has come.”

Malveaux said that the wealth gap between black and white Americans hasn’t diminished over the years—in fact, studies show it’s gotten worse. And though Donald Trump’s presidency has helped to galvanize some of these conversations around racial equity, she added that the work around studying reparations has been done for many years through organizations like the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations (NCOBRA).

This prompted me to leave the following reply:

"Malveaux said that the wealth gap between black and white Americans hasn’t diminished over the years—in fact, studies show it’s gotten worse."

Question; what is the wage gap between Black Americans and the average person in West Africa? That is the more important comparison, not the wage gaps between Americans. Seems to me the current African Americans have actually profited by having ancestors who were slaves; it got them out of those hell-holes their ancestors inhabited. Nobody is saying slavery was some sort of benefit, but clearly black Americans are doing better than their African cousins. Oh, and does anyone remember George Obama, Barack's half brother who was living in the equivalent of a cardboard box in Kenya? He would have been better served to have been born here, slavery or no.

Everything is blamed on slavery by the victocrats in the black community, but how much is a result of slavery and how much is a result of clinging to a culture that has failed them? Black culture is a blend of the stone-age values of the ancestors of modern blacks mixed a veneer of Western civilization and an unhealthy dose of victimology and dependency. They embrace the Democrats as an article of faith, a religious belief that is at odds with empirical data and their own interests. So many black people blindly obey the slave masters in the social welfare state and the Democratic Party.

I have to ask; why are Asians doing so much better than African Americans? Asians weren't slaves, but they were just barely a step above, yet they do very well.

Victimhood is like alcoholism; denial is the first and most noticeable symptom. The African American community will never find what they claim to be looking for as long as they blame others for their fate. Did they get a raw deal in the past? Sure, but every ethnic group did as some point. The Irish weren't exactly welcomed with open arms. And that is true in all countries through all history. The Romans held slaves; lots of them. Should Italy be paying reparations?

For decades the Federal Government practiced what was called "race norming" in it's hiring practices. They denied they did it until just about fifteen years ago or so; they knew it would be very unpopular. But hiring was done on the basis of how one scored on the civil service exams, yet far more blacks were employed than whites, which made no sense as blacks generally score more poorly on written exams. There was discrimination against whites as a form of reparations. Also, the entire welfare state - the Great Society - was aimed at the black community. In short, we've already had reparations. I wouldn't mind giving them if that would mean the end of things; no more race norming, no more affirmative action, no more whining. But this will only accelerate the pro-black discrimination, not give us a race-neutral country.

Of course, the logistics of reparations are daunting, and they would be inherently unfair. Who pays? Will children of Bosnian immigrants who came here during the war with Serbia have to pay? They had nothing to do with slavery, nor did many white people whose family immigrated after the Civil War. And America has never held the sins of the father against the son. Who receives the benefits? Somali immigrants? They never experienced slavery. This is nothing but a way to enshrine discrimination and reverse racism.

I have a modest proposal; perhaps we should focus our attention a bit more precisely. Since the Democratic Party supported slavery (the Republicans were founded as an anti-slavery party0 and since they supported Jim Crow and the Ku Klux Klan, maybe the reparations should only come from registered Democrats? Just asking.

1 Will descendants of those who died fighting for the North in the Civil War in order to end slavery have to pay reparations? Did not the death of their ancestors mean anything?

2 Guess not, Bill H.!  Their ancestors deserved to die because THEIR ancestors tolerated slavery, or so the thinking goes. Not the it matters; these people want what they want and don't care about the details.
