'Is the Pope a Catholic'? is the best response to this article. 😄 (Unfortunately I didn't come up with that.)
Pope Francis Calls for Civil Unions for Same Sex Couples
A word from Tim:
Francis shows himself to be an heretic here.
The purpose of the Church, and especially the Pope, is to keep people out of Hell. That is their primary mission. The social work - feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, housing the homeless etc. - is only an ancillary mission. Salvation is the first and foremost.
Homosexual behavior is a mortal sin. Paul made that quite clear in 1Corinthians 6:9-10:
Get that? Homosexuals are sinners and will not enter the Kingdom of God.
See also Leviticus18: 21-22
Leviticus 20:13
Romans 1:25-27
Look, there are people who have same sex attractions. There are also people who lust after children, or wild beasts, or dead bodies. But if they do not act on those impulses they are blameless. This becomes sin when they seek to fulfill these lusts. This isn't just true of sexual perversion; a married man is not supposed to screw around on his wife. It becomes a sin when he actually does so. We are all here to be tested, and we are all tested in different ways. Satan (I know; he's sooo politically incorrect these days) knows our weaknesses and tempts us with them. In the past society was set up to discourage acting on them. Sex outside of marriage was discouraged in general and homosexual sex in particular. Now we think we know better and dismiss the wisdom of the past as folly.
But the Catholic Church held to this "old fashioned" idea of not excusing sin so as not to allow people to drift into Hell. Apparently Francis wants only a fun-loving, hipster God. He wants a God who excuses, and who holds no standards (except in condemning free markets). Righteousness is swallowed up in faux grace. Justice is ignored in favor of forgiveness to the point of damnation.
Francis is a heretic. I don't think we can call him anything else.

We are supposed to learn patience and how to deal with temptation; how to resist it, to say "no" to it. NOT to say "Aw, shucks, I guess I'll just jump right in."

"Regarding the pope, if you take his comments in context they make a little more sense but he has a history of not clarifying his position. I don’t believe he’s changing church teaching and actually he can’t! So church teaching is going nowhere but lack of clarity still remains as long as we have human error."
I sent her the link to your post and our comments. I would love it if she were to post a comment!

I wish there was a recall mechanism. Francis looks a lot like the False Prophet from Revelations.

Anne is a dear, sweet lady -- that's why I asked her to be my sister -- but she is often a bit too gentle. In this matter she feels, I think, that she has to "cover" for Francis, perhaps. What Martha and I are more worried about is the pickle that Francis has placed the more conservative members of the clergy in. Even though Francis can't change canon law, a lot of people will take it that he has, and priests who are refusing to perform same-sex marriages have now pretty much had the rug pulled out from under them.
This was a win for Satan!

There are a lot of people like Ann; they will cut him slack because he's Pope. I won't. The Pope is only infallible when speaking Ex Cathedra, and he is chosen by God but aren't we all? It doesn't mean he does what God wants; look at Saul, who was chosen by God, but as punishment to Israel and an object lesson.
