Pete Buttigieg faces racism, 'dog whistle' accusations after touting his roots in 'American Heartland'

Dana Mathewson

Doggone, it must be hard to be a Leftist candidate. You have to watch everything you say, in fear of coming up with... well, now it's dog whistles. As I post this, I have my computer speakers turned off so as not to discomfit my dog -- though I seriously doubt there are any real dog whistles in this. And if there are, how are humans supposed to hear them?

First, let me point out that I have less than zero use for Mayor Pete, the Alfred E. Neuman look-alike with the beanie-with-the-propeller constantly on his head, whose favorite tactic is to pull the "more Christian than thou" hectoring of real Christians, whether candidates or not. So I don't feel any sympathy for him when he gets slammed for these accusations, I just find it rather silly. As I do his attempts to counter them.

A smattering of media figures attacked former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Wednesday, suggesting that he used racist language when he called for a president who had their roots in the "American Heartland."

"It is a dog whistle," former CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien tweeted. "And maybe Mayor Pete isn’t aware of that. There is nothing more virtuous about a vision honed in the Heartland. Again—he should sit with his staffers of color and have them explain this to him." [Hint: read the article to see if he did]

The controversy came as Buttigieg's campaign reportedly disseminated a questionnaire for staff members of color, asking them whether they experienced "microaggressions" in the workplace. The survey was the latest indication that Buttigieg might be encountering issues with his ability to connect with minorities.

Buttigieg had originally tweeted that his roots in the "heartland" were an antidote to the ineffective politics of Washington, D.C.

"Heartland is code. And I'm over it," tweeted Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund."It erases the legitimacy of the experiences and reality of Black mid-Westerners and cloaks white mid-Western communities in a gauzy innocence and authenticity."

Comedian Andy Richter similarly tweeted: "I’m from the supposed Heartland, and in a political context 'the Heartland' does not mean not-Washington. It means the place where white people run things."

Oh, gag, for cryin' out loud! Do any of these people ever have an original thought? Go here and read the article to find out: https://www.foxnews.com/media/pete-buttigieg-backlash-american-heartland And if you have a dog, give him/her a hug instead of using a dog whistle!

1 First, I have little doubt Mayor Pete is quite skilled blowing on all manner of whistles.

Second, this shows the difficulty the Democrats have; they NEED the heartland but are incapable of giving up their contempt for it. Mayor Pete rightly understands that the heartland was what put Donald Trump in office and he needs to fool at least some of us to win the Presidency. People like Soledad O'Brien are so contemptuous of Middle America they can't see the need to do this - or are incapable of swallowing their pride enough to do it.

Democrats in the past (and she is one, news person or no) used to hide who they really were in order to fool people into voting for them. But they thought they had won completely with Obama and they are unwilling to go back into the closet, as it were (with Mayor Pete more so perhaps.) They want to give the middle finger to Middle America.

2 (Snicker) Yes, I think you've got Pete figured out. And Soledad too. She's probably been told to attempt to push the weaker candidates to the side in order to pump up the more radical candidates.

Who do you think she really wants to face Trump in the General?
