The end result is it LOOKS that way to the casual observer (who gets his news from the mainstream media). But in fact there is no net increase in either intensity or frequency of these storms. Mostly the media hypes this to terrify the public. As Michael Crichton pointed out, the modern social mechanism for controlling the public is fear, and that is ginned up by the media in just this fashion.
