Live by the Polls, Die by the Polls

Lance Sjogren

Realclearpoliti cs has added Ron DeSantis to the list of national political leaders whose public approval poll ratings they post.

DeSantis is the only one who has a positive rating, at +6.0.

The closest to DeSantis is Biden who has a -9.4 rating.

Trump and the congressional leaders of both parties are in the -10 to -20 range.

Except for Mitch McConnell who's so unpopular he's off the charts, at -35.4.

Even though DeSantis won re-election in a landslide in Florida, that's not enough in itself to earn him a positive rating on the national level. The rating shows he has a lot of public support throughout the country.

They should add some others like Newsom, Elizabeth Warren, etc. I would guess Newsom's rating would be similar to Biden's and Warren's would be similar to Kamala Harris's, which is about -15.

Tim replies:

I do not believe Joe Biden is that high. Certainly no higher than Trump.

These polls are probably skewed towards Democrats, as most polls are these days. I do not believe any logical person thinks Biden is worth a warm bucket of p, er, spit.

And I don't believe Trump polls so badly.

We know that polls are not accurate; they showed Trump getting clobbered in both '16 and '20, something that proved not to be true. And Trump won more votes than any man in history in '20 and allegedly lost to Mr. Biden, who did not campaign. Ri-ight.

Many conservatives do not want to answer pollsters because of fear of being blacklisted by the government, and many others are just too busy with work, something not true among Democrats.

I think if we live by the polls we shall surely perish by them. And polls can change over time with leadership, or lack thereof. Certainly DeSantis is doing well because the media has yet to gear up their attack machine against him. And Trump fares poorly because he's taken all of what they could bring to bear on him.

I suspect that they have some nice present for Mr. DeSantis if he gets the nod. Mark my words.
