Eric Edelman
Tim adds:
Eric von Kuhnelt-Leddin made the same argument about De Sade. He argued that De Sade was the founder of modernity insofar as it was his views of easy sexuality of any and every stripe (no pun intended). His writing was indeed popularized by 19th century french (and German) philosophers and that created the Free Love movement - the forerunner to feminism and the sexual revolution. So our modern world is based on the meanderings of a guy who liked to beat women into unconsciousness
