Brittney Griner's return has re-ignited calls for female basketball players to be paid the same as male basketball players, so they don't "have" to go play for foreign teams.
The problem is, if every dime brought in by all the WNBA teams put together was used to pay women players the average male NBA salary … they couldn't even field two teams to play against each other.
Seriously. Average male NBA salary is about $7.5 million per year. Women's NBA total gross income, all teams combined, is less than nine times that, $60 million. They couldn't even field nine players if every dime went to the players and nothing to admin, overhead, and expenses.
Simple economics. If only a few people pay to attend the circus, the performers won't make a lot of money.

PS—Am I glad Griner is no longer in the Gulag? Absolutely. I've been in jail, it's no fun, and I can't even imagine what a Russian Gulag is like.
I'm just pissed that the weak coward in the White House didn't hold out for Paul Whelan as well … although I must confess, I didn't expect that pusillanimous pinche cabrón to get even one of them back.
Might I suggest the WNBA charge enough to pay the women same as the men. That way all is fair, right? Granted, the WNBA will have maybe five fans at the games because nobody wants to pay extra to watch women's basketball, but heh! It's all fair, right!
The value of a thing is what that thing will bring. If the WNBA was a superior product it would bring more money and the players would get paid more.
Maybe we should have a champion game between the NBA champions and the WNBA team? That should end the stupidity of this claim for good.
Here is the financial breakdown between the two leagues. Note the NBA brings in seven point four BILLION dollars and the WNBA a paltry sixty million. How is that league going to offer the same pay, and why should they? They MUST make up the lost revenue by charging more.
And the average viewership for the NBA as of 2019 finals was 15.14 million viewers compared to the paltry 231,000 garnered by the WNBA.
Average attendance for the NBA that years was 18,000 while for the WNBA it was 6,768.
On the question of revenue Draft Kings says:
In a WNBA season, there are 204 matchups between teams. As each team plays 34 games – four against in-conference competition and three against out of conference competition. There is the possibility of 35 post-season games if each series maxed out at five games.
It is currently estimated that the WNBA generates approximately $60 million in revenue, while $12.3 million of that revenue is distributed to its players.
In 2018, the NBA’s 30 teams generated $7.4 billion in revenue which was up 25% from 2017. From a 1983 agreement to cap payrolls, NBA Players are guaranteed at least 53% of league revenue."
End excerpt.
So why should Brittany Griner get paid what men get paid in the NBA? Anybody?
When she starts drawing what the men draw she will be paid like the men. Until then everyone should either buck up for WNBA tickets or shut up.
