GOP Should Ignore the Consultants

Timothy Birdnow

Writing at Conservative HQ, Jeffrey Rendall makes a great case for nationalizing the upcoming elections and taking it to the Donkeys as the Party of hate and snarling. He also rips the GOP for the cowards that they are. He's right, and I left the following comment on the article:

Great piece Jeff!

You're right; politics ISN'T that complicated. What makes it so is the fact that the monied class is at odds with the majority of voters and the GOP is caught in a quandary, trying to fool the voters to please the financiers. Oh, and the media, we cannot forget them. Republicans fear being destroyed by the media through scurrilous charges and liberlous slander. So they walk on eggshells all the time. But victory would be easy if they would grow a spine and speak Truth to Power aka tell the liberals to go stuff it. But they won't because they don't think that way. They want to be everything to everybody.

Oh, by the way, the fact that every hill is now one worth expiring upon is evidence that we are winning, as the Left is growing increasingly frantic in their efforts to maintain power. It means we have to be willing to die on those hills ourselves, or at least fight on them. Too bad so many in the GOP want to play patty-cake with the opposition instead.

In point of fact politics is much like handling unruly children. You don't try to reason with them, and you don't try to mollify them. You set rules and you stick with them - and you punish them when they break the rules. This is especially true of the Democrats, none of whom ever grew past early adolescence. They throw temper tantrums. They steal from others. They insult people, yell at them. They do not try to make reasonable arguments, or at least don't try after their arguments have been shot down. They try to shout down their opposition. They just want what they want and will scream until they get it. And so they must be treated like children.

A major punishment used on unruly children is the time out. We can affect that via the ballot box, by turning them out of power and forcing them to stand idly by while things get taken away from them. This tactic often works with children, although it will be much harder with the Democrats because the media is on their side and will throw a fit on their behalf. Of course, the media itself can be punished simply by cutting off access. Trump did it and it worked, forcing some of the more virulent Trump-hating journalists out. But it has to be done on a larger scale.

The problem the GOP has is that a large percentage of their number still think this is a disagreement between adults, and the consulting class has no interest in actually making the GOP dominant. Why, you ask? Because if they were the need for a consulting class is reduced. It's like the military doesn't want peace to break out, lest they be reduced in funding and influence. As long as Congress remains split and in a close battle the funds will keep rolling in to these self-styled "experts" because there appears to be a need for managers who have a lot of experience. So the consulting class is happy to lose half their battles; they can claim the GOP would have been routed without them and that they are an absolute must in any election.

But this is not that complicated that it requires experts. It is tiddly-winks, not chess. It's Hungry-Hungry Hippos and not Backgammon.

And the consulting class is in thick as thieves with the monied class, and THAT is their real contribution to elections. They bring home the bacon. How? By promising the pork producers things they want, like ethanol subsidies, like amnesty for illegal indentured servants, like high oil and gas prices, government-funded health insurance, etc. These are things that are contrary to what the public wants and needs, but it benefits those who donate money and the consultants who feed off of them.

I once read an article about how it works in Washington. It's all money all the time. Half of every day is spent in "phone booths" where Congressmen make calls to donors all morning, trying to raise funds. The best fundraisers get the plumb assignments, up to and including committee chairs and even the Speakership of the House. Paul Ryan was a huge fundraiser. So was John Boehner before him. And to raise money from people who you have put the touch on before requires more and more be given in return. So the Republicans, anyway, and no doubt the Democrats too, are forced to work in direct opposition to the base of the Party. But to get elected they have to trick the base into believing they are working in their interest. So we have the Obamacare debacle, where the GOP refused to vote for it and ran against it every chance they had, yet when they got the power to eliminate it they suddenly tucked their heads between their legs. Why? Because there was a lot of money invested in the scheme and the GOP used their opposition solely for optics. In reality most of them were probably pretty happy with it; it gave money to a lot of people who donated money, and it kept dissatisfaction with the insurance industry - a prime source of revenue - at a minimum. People were angrier with the government and the Democrats than with Blue Cross or Coventry.

And, if the GOP truly DID become the dominant party, a lot of the funds they raise would dry up. Crises, fear mongering, help drive funding. This is marketing 101; "act now, before it's too late". Tell people it's an emergency and doomsday is coming if they don't send in money and they will send it in. If it's not a four alarm fire people are less apt to dish out. The Republicans - through the advice of their consulting class - have a vested interest in NOT routing the Democrats. They are the foils, the Snidely-Whiplash's of politics. The GOP WANTS divided government.

Everyone wins except the People.

I am always mindful of Jesus. He was not noted as a fiery or inspirational speaker so much. No. He was rather a strong voice of devotion. His was an unyielding nature, one unwilling to bend to fashion or to waffle. It was one of the great attractions of Jesus, that he spoke with authority (as opposed to most rabbinical types at the time who carefully weighed things and never gave straight answers) and was unbending to forces that would co-opt Him. He cared nothing for money, or fame, or power, or glory.

He told His disciples to travel the countryside, giving His message and if a town did not accept them to "shake the dust from your foot and move on". In other words, present the message and let people decide on their own. It worked; people joined because they were attracted to the authenticity, to the sense of truth behind this. He did not try to coax, or cajole, or have a "big tent". Big tents collapse over time.

If the Republicans would simply follow the example of Jesus they would light a fire that the media and their Democratic allies would be unable to extinguish. People are disgusted with politics largely because of the hypocrisy, the lies, the double-dealing. Give the public real Truth and they will follow you to the ends of the Earth.

So the consulting class needs to take a hike. We don't need to scheme our way to victory; the Democrats have largely walked off a cliff together. All that is needed is for Republicans to point that out to the public. Stand tall, nationalize the elections, and victory will be theirs. But forces are hard at work trying to get the Republicans to fall back into loser habits.

The consultants need to peddle their tripe somewhere else.
