Washington University here in St. Louis is planning to ramp up it's financial aid to "people of color" and others for the medical school. According to St. Louis Public Radio:
"They look at our tuition and they don’t even consider applying because of concern they would accumulate very large amounts of debt,†said Eva Aagaard, the school’s senior associate dean for education. "This might change their mind, and we might see a really different population applying and being accepted into Wash U.â€
The money will make it possible for up to half of the school’s approximately 100 incoming students pursuing an M.D. degree each year to receive full-tuition scholarships to the medical school, ranked among the nation’s best. Others will receive partial support. About 20 current students per class have a full scholarship, and another 40 receive some kind of scholarship. Students pursuing a combined medical and doctoral degree already get a full ride, Aagaard said.
A couple of points; first, why don't they LOWER the cost rather than offer scholarships? This is an admission that they charge too much, that most people can't afford to attend, but there is no suggestion that they lower tuition rates, but rather that they keep gouging some students and they help others. In other words, we have a two-tiered system; some are more equal than others.
This is not about recruiting qualified minorities but rather about "social justice" and punishing white or Asian students for coming from a more successful background. Who is paying the cost? These students who are not being given the aid. They pay huge amounts in tuition while others attend free on their dime. It's redistribution o f wealth.
Furthermore, the minority students take spots that they may not be qualified to take, as part of the outreach. I don't know about you, but I want he best doctor I can get. Be he black, white, Asian, Amerindian, Innuit, Saami, Moari, Australian Aborigini, what have you. I don't want some guy opening my insides who is only there because he was the right color, or the right sex, or shagged the right people. Quality is color blind; affirmative action is not and leads to poor quality.
There are places in this world where a medical license can be purchased for a price. Nobody wants to go to the doctor in those places, because the doctors are incompetent. America is working her way to just that with affirmative action policies, with "social Justice", with the babbling insanity of our modern higher educational system.
The article continues:
With the announcement, Washington University joins a handful of the country’s elite medical schools that have drastically decreased or done away altogether with medical school tuition. Last year, New York University’s medical school made headlines when it announced it was waiving tuition for all students thanks to a massive donation. Other schools such as Columbia University have followed suit.
Critics say such programs are offering support to students who don’t need money. Students accepted to NYU or Columbia are already bound to have many opportunities other students don’t have.
End excerpt.
Notice how they conflate aid with tuition reduction? That isn't what Wash U. has said it is doing. It is targeting some for tuition forgiveness but not all.
Notice too, how the argument against this is "they don't NEED the money" meaning the students. Well, the Universities don't need the money either. This is vintage leftist thought; from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs. It's not about doing what is fair by the students but what you want to make fair.
Wash U. explains they are going to avoid helping the rich:
Unlike other schools, Washington University isn’t offering full rides to everyone. The medical school will determine who receives scholarships based on a combination of merit, interest in studying academic medicine and financial need, Aagaard said.
End excerpt.
Here is another point that caught my eye:
The $100 million will also enable the university to start putting its new medical school curriculum program in place. Instead of starkly dividing the four years into "book†learning in the first half and practical learning in the second, the new plan combines medical learning with practical science throughout the entire program.
The new curriculum will also further emphasize social sciences and community needs, Aagaard said.
End excerpt.
So, Wash U. will emphasize social sciences (most of which are hockum, (IMHO) and "community needs". In other words, the free market has no place here. Instead of letting the market decide these deep thinkers will do it for us, and will turn out a bunch of sex-change surgeons or feminist intersectional endocrinologists. Everything but a guy who can actually set a broken bone or whatnot. Great.
Medicine is broken and keeps getting more broken. This will continue until we put free market economics back in, take out government and large institutions, and return to common sense. But I don't see that happening any time soon.
All Washington U. is doing here is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
