Explosion in Antarctic sea ice levels may cause another ice age

Dana Mathewson

If you have a direct line to AOC and/or Greta Thunberg, you may want to send them this article. Don't expect any thanks from them, however; you're more likely to get raspberries, and I don't mean the soft red kind you buy in the supermarket.

Upside-down "rivers" of warm ocean water may be one of the causes of Antarctica's ice shelves breaking up, leading to a rise in sea levels. But a new study suggests an increase in sea ice may lead to a much more devastating change in the Earth's climate— another ice age.

Using computer simulations, the research suggests that an increase in sea ice could significantly alter the circulation of the ocean, ultimately leading to a reverse greenhouse effect as carbon dioxide levels in the ocean increase and levels in the air decrease.

"One key question in the field is still what caused the Earth to periodically cycle in and out of ice ages,” University of Chicago professor and the study's co-author, Malte Jansen, said in a statement. "We are pretty confident that the carbon balance between the atmosphere and ocean must have changed, but we don’t quite know how or why."

The last major ice age ended at the end of the Pleistocene era, about 2.5 million years ago, as glaciers have periodically grown and then gotten smaller. Researchers believe that changes to the Earth's orbit may be partly responsible for some of the Earth's cooling, but additional factors have likely played a part, Jensen added.

"The most plausible explanation is that there was some change in how carbon was divided between the atmosphere and the ocean,” Jansen continued. "There’s no shortage of ideas about how this happens, but it’s not quite clear how they all fit together.”

Researchers also believe a mini-ice age may have occurred roughly 12,800 years ago. It likely stems from an asteroid impact that "rocked the Northern Hemisphere" and led to the Younger Dryas climate event.

Jansen pointed out that the Southern Ocean around Antarctica "plays a key role in ocean circulation" due to the deep waters in the region, leading it to have "outsize[d] consequences."

Now, I'm not going to start buying heavier clothes, though at 29 degrees it does seem unseasonably chilly here -- my wife just tossed the latest Lands End catalog that arrived in the mail -- and I'm not terribly impressed that this scientist seems fixated on carbon. But he does point out that the Southern Hemisphere plays a key role in the process, which is more than most of the Global Warmiacs do, so maybe there's hope for him after all.

1 I was just about to post about this but you beat me to it, Dana!

I suspect this scientist is trying to save the day for the Gang Green, to find a way to explain why there has been no statistically significant warming. Just as these people did in the late seventies when they switched from Global Cooling to Global Warming, they may be ready to switch back again. They know warming and cooling trends last about forty years and the warming trend is about up, so they have to go back to the disco era sawhorse.

They've set it up so no matter what happens they can blame it on industrial emissions and automobiles.

We probably ARE moving into an unusually cold period. Solar activity has been quite sluggish for a while now - the same conditions that proceeded both the Dalton and Maunder Minimum and gave us the Little Ice Age. And cold kills people, for more than does warmth. Crops fail. Poor people struggle to heat their homes. Ice and snow increase public expenses as these have to be managed. Better to have a warm season; crops like that, so there is more food.

But we here at The Aviary know all that already.

2 Yup, I'd say you've nailed it.
What the Gang Green never addresses is the idea that Cooling causes more problems like the need to constantly clear more land for planting food, because shorter growing seasons produce less food on a given amount of land. That means that relatively primitive peoples such as those who live in the Amazon River area cut, burn and clear more (sacred) rain forest -- which annoys the living Hell out of the Gang Green.
So whyizzt that the Gang seems to prefer policies that apparently, if followed, would arrest warming (and therefore promote cooling)?

3 The article trashes itself in it's first sentence. "Upside-down 'rivers' of warm ocean water may be one of the causes of Antarctica's ice shelves breaking up, leading to a rise in sea levels."
Antarctica's ice shelves are already in the sea, they are floating on the surface of the ocean and continue to do so after they break off. The breaking off, therefor, does not raise the level of the sea one millimeter. Idiots.

4 Excellent point, Bill. You are absolutely correct; these ice shelves sit out miles into the sea. They calve when they get too far out, or the amount of ice becomes too great.

Another point to ponder; Antarctica is the dryest desert on Earth, because snow and rain never make it that far; it's too cold. The Continental ice caps grow or shrink very slowly as a result. Eventually they grow until pressure pushes the outlying ice into the sea. It's a completely natural process that is going to happen anyway. A percentage of one degree rise in atmospheric temperatures will not affect that, not in a place where below zero temperatures are the norm. And water currents?  The Antarctic current is a circumpolar current that is quite wide and deep and very cold. Warm water does not penetrate it.

This whole thing is a farce.
