Climate Grinches

Gregory Wrightstone

Climate grinches are asking – sometimes forcing – people to consume less electricity, forgo festive celebrations, alter vacation plans and give up meat. Some victims of this insanity may even freeze to death for lack of affordable energy.

1 Our power company is deep into a flirtation with wind and solar, and consequently has sent its customers an e-mail asking us to lower our thermostats to 65 during the daytime -- for the duration of this current storm -- and 60 when we're not home. (Interestingly enough, the storm ran away and hid during the middle of the night and today is bright and sunny, though only about -3 degrees.)

I'm very disinclined to change our settings, which are 71 during the day and 68 at night. I didn't tell the fools to go whole hog on wind and solar, and there certainly are enough examples to indicate they should stay far, far away from those techniques.

2 Our electric company went there too. Now they struggle to generate enough power.

You can't run a post-industrial society with high tech electronics on pinwheels and mirrors. (It's all smoke and mirrors sans smoke.)

Got down to minus 6 last night here in St. Louis. Coldest night since 1983!

3 I see the Euros are going back to coal, bigtime. Maybe the Eurolovers in this country will take the hint.

4 They have to. But I doubt we'll see it here, not unless we have a very bad time of it.

"Renewables" is key to their long-range plans.
