C.S. Lewis Play Opens in NYC

Jack Kemp forwards this:

Opening soon in NY City. You learn something every day...
https://fpatheatre.com/production/shadowlands/

Shadowlands, the unlikely love story of C.S. Lewis and Jow Davidman.

The Unlikely, True Love Story of C.S. Lewis and Joy Davidman
From the producers of The Screwtape Letters, The Most Reluctant Convert, The Great Divorce and Martin Luther on Trial comes Shadowlands, the unlikely and true love story of renowned Oxford scholar and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis and the much younger Joy Davidman, a divorced Jewish New Yorker, former Communist and Christian convert.

The smart, brash Joy bursts into Lewis’ sedate, middle-aged life and upends it. Lewis is as shocked as anyone to discover that he and Joy have fallen deeply in love – and then almost immediately he must contend with the equally deep pain of losing her when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Funny, poignant and insightful, Shadowlands — also an Oscar®-winning film — is a moving portrait of love and loss, faith and doubt, as inspired by Lewis’ own A Grief Observed.

THIS FROM dANA mATHEWSON

There was a movie awhile back -- or a TV show. Not sure I remember them falling deeply in love. It was more like, she asked him to marry her, as a matter of convenience. But love eventually blossomed.

Why I Oppose Banning Bump Stocks

elwyn Duke

The latest firearm-equipment boogeyman is the "bump stock,” a device allowing one to fire a semi-automatic rifle more rapidly. Liberals learned of bump stocks because Las Vegas murderer Stephen Paddock had modified 12 of his rifles with them.
This has made them a target for prohibition, and an easy one, too. After all, almost no one wants to buy a bump stock, so even many Republicans — and the National Rifle Association — are willing to place greater restrictions on the device. I also have no plans to acquire one, but I wouldn’t even consider outlawing the stock. Why?
Remember last year’s Orlando massacre, perpetrated by Muslim terrorist Omar Mateen? In its wake the gun boogeyman, as it has often been, was the AR-15, the sleek black gun with military looks that makes libs wet their panties. We were told how outrageous it was that such a " HYPERLINK "http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/orlando-club-shooter-ar-15-rifle-newtown-article-1.2670739" killing machine” (is this the Terminator we’re talking about?) was available to the public. But notice something funny?

Paddock also had an AR-15 rifle.

Yet we haven’t heard a peep from the mice about this "killing machine.” The reason? more...

School Coach Branded Racist For Calling Thugs “Thugs”

Daren Jonescu

Imagine if behind every little thug, there were larger, stronger thugs ready to defend those little thugs against criticism or correction. In this situation, thuggery would always grow, and all defense against it would be futile, until at last most people would just give up and either join the thugs or hide quietly in their corners all their lives.

This self-perpetuating thuggish world is the social mechanism of public school in a nutshell — a world in which beating up a classmate with special learning needs has become a less egregious offense than condemning that beating with language that might hurt the perpetrators’ feelings.

Public education is systematized thuggery raised to the level of an extinction event. And what is slowly going extinct under the government schooling regime is civil society — standards of mutual respect and decency, individual responsibility, rational discourse, higher literacy, the spiritual life, and moderation.

In an age which spews out endless microcosmic instantiations of this destruction on a daily basis, you could hardly find one more all-encompassing, or more indicative of this particular moment in our global decline, than the following from Right Scoop.

A [Pennsylvania] volunteer [wrestling] coach was banned from the school where he helped kids by some IDIOT of a super-intendant who CAVED like a coward before irrational calls from the mob that the coach was a racist.

What did he do?

Well, the coach saw a video online of two pathetic maggots beating on a 16-year-old student with special needs – and he called them "thugs.”

Trump Fails to End Iran Con Game; Fails America

Timothy Birdnow

Trump keeps the iran nuclear deal in place.

Accordding to Breitbart:

"President Donald Trump will not re-certify to Congress Iranian compliance with the landmark nuclear deal signed in 2015 under President Barack Obama, but will keep the agreement itself in place.

Congress will be urged to pass new "trigger points” to hold the Iranians to account and the Treasury Department will be directed to place additional sanctions on the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a wing of the Iranian military accused of terrorist acts in support of the Iranian regime throughout the region"

End excerpt.

This is too cute by half and has all the earmarks of mcMasters and Tillerson, two internationalists who have always supported the Obama policies. Donald Trump campaigned ona promise to end this deal, which was never a formal treaty and which gave Iran the right to develop atomic weapons.

More from the Breitbart article:

"Tillerson called the JCPOA, against which Trump ran extensively during his campaign for the presidency, was "only one piece of what concerns us in our relationship with Iran.”

"We don’t think that nuclear deal should define the entire policy. Quite frankly, in the past, it more or less has defined Iran policy,” he explained, citing the Iranian Shiite theocratic regime’s "destabilizing” support of Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and "other terrorist activities.” The decision to not certify compliance has the effect of putting reform of the nuclear deal in the hands of Congress. Tillerson recommended against Congress either doing nothing – and leaving the current deal in place – or scraping the deal entirely. Instead, he suggested:

There is a third path the president is going to be suggesting Congress consider. … amend the INARA to put in place some very firm trigger points … that if Iran crosses any of these trigger points the sanctions automatically go back into place. There’s no determination other than they’ve hit a trigger point. There’s no other action required, the sanctions just automatically go back on. These are trigger points that are specific to the nuclear program itself, but also deal with things like their ballistic missile program.

Tillerson explained what he saw as the benefit of putting these "trigger points” into federal law, saying they would then form a more permanent part of American Iran policy. The provisions of a reform bill would extend beyond the sunset provisions of the JCPOA and would require both a future President and Congress to overturn, addressing what Tillerson called "a countdown clock to when Iran can resume its nuclear weapons development program.”

"The President also would like to have the Congress deal with that expiry within INARA,” Tillerson said, arguing such a law would put Iran on notice that the trigger points would be part American-Iranian relations in perpetuity.

End excerpt.

Congress never voted on this; it was Barack Obama's imperial policy. Why is Trump sending it back to Congress now? If he wants Congress to deal with it he should write his own plan and submit it to Congress, not ask them to decide what dto do with Obama's plan.

And this business about "trigger points" is imbecilic; we aren't going to hve an inspection regime to veify if they are hitting this mark. Americans are prohibited from being part of any inspections. What Trump ahs done here is merely kick the can down the road - a shiny enriched uranium can that may well explode when kicked.

Trum promised America he was going to get rid of this terrible deal and now he has allowed himself to be talked into it by his liberal appointees. It is inexcusable.

Time is running out. North Korea and Iran share all of their technological advancements and concentrating on Korea is pointless; this has to be dealt with in tandem. Trump has just upended his own policy.

Nadal Chappelle Makes an Ass of Herself Again

Timothy Birdnow

oops, she did it again!

Missouri state senator Maria Nadal Chapppallle, the blustery foot-in-mouth state senator from Missouri who recently wished for President Trump's assassination, has done it again, this time comparing the President to Adolf Hitler.

According to KTVI Fox 2 News:

"It's not a war or words but a picture that has some raising their eyebrow over Missouri Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal's Latest tweet about President Trump. It shows the controversial Dove body wash ad where a woman takes off her shirt to reveal someone else underneath. This picture shows the president's face and once the shirt is removed, it's revealed to be Adolph Hitler.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch interviewed Chappelle-Nadal about the tweet. She tells the newspaper that, "I have a First Amendment right to share my opinion, and if a meme is offensive to people, they should look at the First Amendment again," she said. "Then ask yourself why you have different qualifications for a black woman of Puerto Rican descent than other people putting up a meme with no words. It's Twitter."

Missouri's Lieutenant Governor Mike Parson tweets, "Some things never change. Another example why she should not be in the Missouri Senate.""

End excerpt.

Indeed, Nadal Chappalle is a humiliation for the State of Missouri, a woman who should be drinking Maddog from a paper bag around a fire barrell rather than making laws for the Show Me State. She is a racist and a nasty person and clearly knows nothing about history. Oh, and Donald Trump's son-in-law is a Jew and his daughter a convert, and Kushner is an important adviser to the Donald. Could the same be said of Hitler? For that mater, could the same be said of Nadal Chappelle?

When you have lost an argument you must turn to childish expressions like this. This woman is mentally and morally bankrupt and should be removed from the statehouse.

McConnell ends Blue Slipping

Timothy Birdnow

The Senate has reached a point of nearly complete stasis thaniksto mitch McConnell's worship of antiquated Senate rules and the unwillingness of the Republicans to move forward the Trump agenda lest an outsider show them up and break the power of the Establishment. But McConnell is starting to move,k probably out of fear, and he has taken a welcome step; he just ended the blue slip rule which has kept President Trump for getting any judges appointed.

The blue slip rule basically made it possible for one Senator to stop a judicial nomination. If a Senator from the home state of the nominee objected to said nominee he could issue a blue slip, thereby killing the nomination. The Democrats were furious when John Ashcroft did it to a black judge appointed by Bill Clinton Ronnie White, who once called a plaintiff in a case "m-f" in his brief). The Dems railed against the blue slip proceedure, and yet now they will defend it with all of their might.

Be that as it may, Mitch the Prison Bitch has finally asserted himself. According to Natalia Castro at Americans for Limited Government:

"With only seven judicial nominees confirmed by the Senate, despite Trump’s now 54 pending nominations, McConnell has placed part of the blame on this policy for allowing individual politicians to single handily stall the confirmation process.

McConnell stated the blue slip policy will act "as simply notification of how you’re going to vote, not as an opportunity to blackball.” This is a smart decision considering the blue slip process represents the slow, outdated, and partisan policies of the swamp, but a closer look at the judicial nominations still pending proves the real issue is rooted much deeper in the Senate.

While this move will effectively allow the nine judicial nominees from states with Democrat senators to be freed up for consideration in committee, assuming they were all be blue slipped, it does nothing to expedite the process for the 10 judicial nominees who have cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee and are merely awaiting a confirmation vote on the floor. And there are another 35 judicial nominees from states with Republican senators."

End excerpt.

McConnell has to put up or shut up. He has proven an ineffective leader, whether by weakness or design. I would argue the latter; he doesn't want Trump to be successful and disprove the arguments made by the swamp rats of the GOP and the consultants who promote them. But either way McConnell has failed to move anything in a Senate he controls - and that is grounds to remove him from the leadership and perhaps even his Senate seat when he is up for re-election. It's time for Mitch to earn his pay or get out of the way.

Harvey Weinstein’s Wife Turns To Mrs. Anthony Weiner, Huma Abedin, For Support

Dana Mathewson

Folks, I do not distribute porn, but I have to admit that this comes awfully close to it. Keep in mind these are the Left -- the people who look down on you and me -- the people who know better than we how the country should be run.

The people who want to take our guns away from us so we can't hurt ourselves or anyone else with them.

There are some pretty good comments following the article!

A NOTE FROM J. DAVID DICKINSON:

First of all, what's this about how her husband turned about to be different than the man she used to know, he's been exactly like who he is now for thirty years or more, in other words, when they first met. Another interesting fact about Weinstein's wife and why possibly she ignored his behavior, his starlets, many of whom he did weird things with, were always dressed in his wife's clothing designs for red carpet appearances, that was part of the deal.

Rush recommended that the person Weinstein himself should reach out to for help is Hillary Clinton, she's an expert at aggressively going after victims and she's the best in the world at managing a pervert's affairs so that not only does nothing at all happen to him, he gets elected twice as president. And her grandest accomplishment is that through it all, her own personal sexual abuser is revered by both men and women in the Democrat Party and their leaders in the media.

“The Left and the Media love their scumbags”

Jack Kemp

There is a blog piece today at Amer. Thinker about the connection between Hollywood and various sleazy politicians such as the late Ted Kennedy. http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/10/the_predatory_politics_of_the_democrats.html

It begins with this quote:

"The Left and the Media love their scumbags” (Sebastian Gorka,10.12.17)
END

This piece made me recall a true story that I added as a comment:

Speaking of the Kennedys and scumbags, I have an interesting story I saw on the Biography tv show years ago. Peter Lawford was a teenager whose family had moved to the Palm Beach, FL, area from England. While working at a Palm Beach parking lot, Peter befriended a young black teen working with him. One of the customers to that parking lot actually complained to management that Lawford was too friendly with a black (this was in the days of the Jim Crow South) and should be fired.

The Internet Movie Database bio of Lawford lists this version of the story:
"In his 20s, he worked at a country club. A prestigious member of the club once complained to the management that Lawford was eating lunch and fraternizing with the black employees, and that he should be fired. This member was Joseph P. Kennedy, who years later became his father-in-law!"

Lawford wasn't fired but years later, when Lawford became a well known actor, that same parking lot customer, a wealthy winter resident of Palm Beach named Jospeh P. Kennedy Senior, walked his daughter down the isle of a church to give her hand away in marriage to that same Peter Lawford. Well, at least Old Joe didn't take Lawford for a drive off of the Chappaquiddick bridge...

Elk Attack in Mo. Park; Bless the Beasts and the Children

Jack Kemp

Apparently with Harvey Weinstein set to leave the country and Bill Clinton and Anthony Weiner far from them, they thought the last rougue male was out of the way. Clearly, these elk hadn't taken Freshman Orientation and Gender Studies classes at college.

According to the story:

"Nature photographer Kent Burgess told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he witnessed one of these incidents take place on Sunday afternoon.

Burgess said that while he was in the park taking photos of the elk, he saw a group of two women and two men walking along a hiking trail near a herd of elk trying to take selfies with the animals.
As Burgess watched the group wander towards the dominant bull, he heard the sound of the animal's bugle, which is a noise that helps elk attract a mate or warn other animals to stay away.

"It was startling," Burgess told the outlet. "I saw the dominant bull moving toward them and I tried to yell at them to get away."

Unable to hear Burgess, the group continued moving towards the large animal which, in turn, lowered its head and charged. One of the women sustained a bloody arm and some otherwise mild injuries.

End excerpt.

A NOTE FROM DANA MATHEWSON:

People who grew up in cities, and whose only experience with wildlife is cockroaches and rats, have no idea how to deal with large wild animals. They often think that such creatures think and act like humans. Too often they learn the truth too late.

This story ought to be submitted to the Darwin Awards committee.

Plus, people -- especially liberals -- evaluate everything by the benevolence of their own motives and believe everyone and everything picks up on that. As a kid of two, I was stung by a hornet, and the pain of the betrayal was worse than the actual sting -- well, almost. "I told him I wouldn't hurt him!" The difference was that I learned.

A NOTE FROM TIM:

Too many people grow up watching Bambi (not the dancer on stage three that Weiner or Wiener would drool over) and thinki the anthropomorphized vision of wild animals is the way it is. They are called wild for a reason, and they act to protect themselves and their offspring. It is stupid beyond words to approach a wild animal of any sort, even a rat or mouse, which can still bite and give you rabies or other diseases. Too many modern Americans have come to believe in their absolute godhead, in the idea that they are completely safe at all times and should be. It's why there is the snowflake phenomenon on college campuses; they think they should be protected from anything that bothers them. Well reality doesn't agree and these elk made that point plain.

Just glad those were elk and not grizzly bears or wolves.

God vs. Private Property?

Daren Jonescu

My article, "Hysterical Christian-Haters for Property Rights” got a fair amount of attention from people craving some kind of rational conversation about that lynchpin issue of modern liberty — property rights, that is, not Christian-hating. Every time I write about property, however, there are always a few holier-than-thou progressives lurking in the weeds to say, "But Christianity is against private property ownership.” If they are clever enough, they might even mention a few Gospel episodes, or something about camels passing through the eyes of needles, to support their point.

To be honest, I’m never sure what point they think they are making, other than to get under the skin of religious conservatives by asking, in effect, "Wasn’t God a socialist?”

Well, no, or not to the best of my knowledge. But since the progressives making these kinds of arguments are mostly non-believers who are just as likely to mock Christianity itself as to mock Christian conservatives, I think it would almost be a category mistake to defend the biblical God against charges that He is or was opposed to private property ownership, since that is not really the charge the progressive muckrakers are making. What they are really saying is that Christianity (the religious belief system as practiced by mortals) is, properly understood, a progressive idea.

Since the mockers never seem to provide any evidence for this claim beyond their specious interpretation of a doctrine which they themselves do not believe has any truth value, but is merely an antiquated social practice, I suggest the only reasonable answer to their sophistry, if any is needed, is to look at what actual Christian leaders have said about matters related to private property in the past. That is to say, how did the most important figures among actual believers in the faith interpret their own "belief system” on this question?

That many recent Christian leaders of all stripes have leaned toward the socialist interpretation is undeniable. But that this latest trend indicates anything more than transitory figureheads unworthy of their posts flirting with fashionable politics, whether out of intellectual weakness or due to the temptations of (perceived) power, is far from obvious — especially in light of the obvious break this late Christian trajectory entails relative to the positions of earlier, graver representatives of the faith.

I will not pretend to be able to trace the details of this leftward trajectory through the modern history of all the major Christian churches, although I suspect most of the individual cases would be roughly analogous to one another. I do know, however, that in the case of the church in which I was raised, namely the Roman Catholic Church, the shift may be encapsulated in a most remarkable transitional document, namely Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical, "Rerum Novarum,” from 1891.

This strange document is an exceptional example of the Catholic tradition on private property, identifying it as not merely acceptable to Christianity, but as essential to living the true Christian life, on many levels.

It is also, however, an early example of the Church’s strained and awkward effort not to distinguish itself fully from the academically-fashionable, German-inspired, progressive political philosophy which was beginning to poison the political wells of the late-nineteenth century Western world. I therefore cite this strangely schizophrenic encyclical as the great moment of untruth for Catholicism, the beginning of the end of the Church’s role in helping to establish the moral conditions of modern liberty — even as it is intermittently a strong declaration of those very conditions.

I wrote about this encyclical, oddly enough, in connection with the 2012 Republican primaries. (Remember when a GOP primary could still involve the discussion of fundamental philosophical questions? The GOP establishment and their friend Donald Trump certainly hope you don’t, because they clearly intend never to let that happen again.)

I refer you, therefore, to my analysis of this document, and of the question of the Catholic Church’s historical position on property rights, "Catholicism and Freedom: A Moment of Truth.”

For further discussion of the issue of property rights in general, I suggest "The Last Line of Defense: Property.”

Hysterical Christian-Haters for Property Rights

Daren Jonescu

A homosexual coffee shop ownerwith an angry mind, a foul mouth, and at least a few screws loose, has done Christian conservatives the favor of a lifetime, making the case for a businessman's private property rights against the progressive oppression of anti-discrimination laws more eloquently -- well, at least more bluntly -- than any Christian business owner could make it.

A Seattle pro-life activist group that had been handing out pamphlets targeting homosexuals for repentance and "rebirth" decided to enjoy a break from their activities at the Bedlam coffee shop. It so happens the shop is owned by a homosexual man, who, when he caught wind of the group's presence -- they were not proselytizing, mind you, just drinking his coffee, thereby filling his coffers -- confronted them...with exactly the kind of expletive-filled, sexually explicit, hysterical hissy-fit rant you'd expect from the stereotypical homosexual coffee shop owner who is hypersensitive about Christian critics of his "lifestyle." In short, he rudely and summarily kicked them off his premises. Now we all know that had the owner been the Christian in this story, and the activists the homosexuals, his actions would be plastered all over the mainstream media, Soros-backed communist protests would be exploiting this little nobody's "hate speech" to increase social unrest and provoke violence, and his butt would be hauled into court faster than you can say "Hello sailor." He would probably be bankrupted, his name and reputation soiled forever, his children humiliated by their teachers, and his entire family sentenced to community service cleaning the toilets at a homosexual nightclub.

But since the owner is the homosexual, and his patrons/victims Christians, the media will largely ignore the story, the communist agitators will say free speech does not extend to these customers' intolerance of the LGBTXYZ community -- Isn't it strange how every favored special interest group is a "community"? Does anyone refer to the "white supremacist community"? -- and the owner will be receiving letters of sympathy, congratulations, and moral support from all corners of the continental United States. The hypocrisy of the left is obvious, revolting, and displays an unsurprisingly complete lack of principle or honor.

But all that is irrelevant next to this: A man decided, for his own idiosyncratic reasons, that he didn't want people of a certain kind on his premises -- after all, it's his place, and he didn't think he should have to put up with opening it to people whose views he abhors -- so he told them they were not welcome. Leaving aside the question of whether he owed them compensation for the drinks they had already paid for, this man made in essence the same decision you make every time you lock your door at night. You don't want a certain kind of people, namely non-residents of the household, availing themselves of your property against your will, so you take active steps to prevent their entry.

This anti-Christian coffee shop case cuts to the basic issue of private property rights: Do you really own what the law calls "your property," or do you not? If you really own it, then you should certainly have every right to deny access to it to anyone you please, for any reason you please. Placing moral conditions on people's (peaceful, nonviolent) control over their own property is nothing less than a rejection of the very concept of private property, as it transforms genuine ownership of something into mere conditional permission to use it.

And if our so-called property is in fact just something we are conditionally permitted to use, then the logical question is, "Who really owns it?" Who, in other words, has the true authority to grant the permission and set the conditions for its use?

Socialists who live in a world of willowy abstractions will answer, "Society." But rational people who look at what is concretely entailed by this conditional permission in practice will answer, "The government."

If a man, assuming he is doing nothing with his property to abuse or violate other people, has been forced to cede authority over its use to government regulators -- as he is forced to do by anti-discrimination laws -- then he owns nothing. Property is a sham, a palliative illusion wielded by government to cushion the blow of a harsh reality, namely that the man lives entirely at the mercy and whim of the State. If the State decides it does not approve of the way he chooses to make his property accessible to others, he can be punished and his preferences overruled in the name of "non-discrimination." (Apparently, discrimination against property owners per se falls outside the realm of self-righteous anti-discrimination sentiments.)

"But a coffee shop is a place of business!" With regard to questions of discrimination and tolerance, we have all been trained to regard private businesses as a unique case, as though running a business were a public (governmental), rather than a private, endeavor. Think about this: If what you do with the majority of your waking hours, and the majority of your mental and physical energy, does not belong to you, simply because it involves the exchange of goods and services, then does this not imply that the entire "free market" -- including the lives and labor of the people who participate in it -- is a state-owned apparatus, i.e., that all activity related to producing, exchanging, and consuming belongs to the government?

And if the time and effort -- which is to say, the life -- a man spends on supporting himself through his labor and productive energy belong to the government, then in what meaningful sense can we say the man owns himself at all?

Offering goods I have produced, or services I have learned to provide, to other people in my community is a private choice, involving my private effort and personal investment. There ought to be nothing, in principle, to distinguish this from my private ownership of my home, with regard to my preferences regarding who should or shouldn't be permitted entry to my premises, or to whom I should or shouldn't render my services.

Note that I am talking about private choices, not discriminatory laws. There is no legitimacy in laws forbidding access to private businesses to certain kinds of law-abiding people, for exactly the same reason that there is no legitimacy in laws demanding access to private businesses for certain kinds of people. Discriminatory laws and anti-discrimination laws are, in this sense, just two sides of the same coin. They both ultimately entail government ownership of "private property."

On the other hand, if a private man, including a small business owner, chooses to discriminate against certain people or kinds of people, then as long as his doing so involves no direct violations of those people's rights, that is his business. Much as we may dislike his preference, there is nothing we can do about it, short of violating his property. And to be clear for those whose progressive education has left them at sea on the question of individual rights, there is no rights violation involved in being denied access to someone's place of business through the owner's private choice. No one can have a right to another man's property (or to association with him), including his commercial property; hence, no right is violated by your being denied access to that other man's property.

Do you support the baker who prefers not to bake cakes for homosexual weddings? Do you despise the homosexual coffee shop owner who prefers not to serve his fare to Christians?

In short, from the point of view of justice, it makes no difference which business owner's attitude you like or dislike. All that matters is that you accept that in both cases, there are no legitimate grounds for denying these owners their personal forms of "discrimination." To discriminate is to judge, which is to think, which is to live as a human being. That our thinking is often wrong, and therefore our judgments false and our discriminations wrongheaded, is a problem of human nature. We are imperfect, and often lost in the fog. But contrary to the progressive authoritarian mentality, this natural imperfection is certainly no justification for overriding or obliterating the condition that, above all other conditions, makes practical reasoning, judgment, and discrimination possible, namely freedom.

On the contrary, it is only through the practical, political freedom to make our (sometimes errant) judgments, including regarding our associations with others -- commercial or otherwise -- that we may gradually grope our way through the fog to the higher kind of freedom every soul seeks.

Robert Mueller's Joyriding at Taxpayer Expense

Timothy Birdnow

HHS Secretary Tom Price was fired for taking private flights on the government dime. But Special Counsel Robert Mueller took far more such flights When he was running the FBI when he ran that organization.

Mueller, as any reader of The Aviary knows, is the crusading investigator trying to dig up something on President Donald Trump.

It makes me wonder; did Trump toss Price under the bus here for this very reason? Something has to be done to rein in Mueller, who filled his staff chock full of Democrat partisans and who has gone way beyond the mandate givgen him. Trump can't just fire Mueller, but he could perhaps damage him with this. Trump is a fighter and will not just let an agent go without a fight. What Price did was common enough, but the media blew a headgasket over it because they wanted him out. Well, sauce serves over both goose and gander...

Now, We Know My Mother Has Flaws, but…

Selwyn Duke

There’s a disclaimer many of us have been conditioned to utter, quite reflexively, and it’s something that has got to stop. When preparing a defense of the United States (against, lamentably, other "Americans”), we may preface it with, "Well, I know our country isn’t perfect” or, as pundit Tucker Carlson HYPERLINK "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMUh5bRrLHk" said while debating a bigoted lawyer last month, "I don’t deny…that this country is flawed….” Actually, our perspective is flawed.
To gain some perspective, imagine you were giving a speech about your mother and opened with, "Now, we know my mother has flaws, but….” Sound good?

Consider the message sent. Since we’re all imperfect, it’s a given your mother has flaws, and, therefore, it isn’t something you’d normally even think to mention. Thus, the very act of mentioning it involves the implication that your mother isn’t just saddled with the usual imperfections — but that she’s uniquely flawed. It’s not something you do unless she’s a somewhat horrible person.

Or you’re a horrible child — or one horribly brainwashed into thinking he must please a certain hateful audience by disparaging what should be held dear.
Of course, if America were uniquely flawed, it would follow that there are a host of nations better. If we know of one, we may want to consider moving there. If we don’t, we should stop parroting that stupid disclaimer. Russians don’t do it. Chinese don’t do it. Japanese don’t do it. Not even Sudanese, Iranians or North Koreans do it.
In fact, while there’s no nation without sin, can you think of one beyond the waning West whose citizens feel compelled to issue self-flagellating we’re-so-flawed utterances? So why do many Americans, despite occupying history’s greatest nation, feel such a compulsion? What are they comparing America to? Heaven?

Speaking of the spirit world, many cultures would engage in ancestor worship. We engage in ancestor condemnation. Just recently, while defending Columbus Day against Indigenous Peoples Day dunderheads, a quite well-meaning commentator wrote that there "are 364 other days in the year on which we could acknowledge the sins of our ancestors….”

Sorry, but I don’t do ancestors. First, I’ll consider condemning our forebears when other groups and nations begin condemning theirs. Second, I’m no more responsible for their trespasses than I am for their triumphs. (Speaking of which, when I start getting royalty checks for all the inventions and innovations birthed by history’s great white men, I’ll consider offering reparations.) Lastly, I have no interest in continually "acknowledging” my ancestors’ sins — I have enough problems with my own.

This brings us to another aspect of this matter, one well illustrated by another comment Tucker Carlson made: that our country "is deeply flawed on questions of race.”

Actually, no, it’s not. As in the 1990s Rwandan genocide, racial/ethnic/tribal/religious conflicts elsewhere often have resulted in massive bloodshed. In contrast, it’s hard to think of a nation in which so many disparate peoples get along as well as in the U.S. (though the Left is trying feverishly to change that). The point is that in all this talk about "our flaws,” we’re not even talking about "our” flaws.

We’re talking about the flaws of people long dead (that is, when the flaws aren’t wholly imaginary).
In other words, we’re fighting yesterday’s battles — harping on our ancestors’ sins in an infinite loop — and ignoring today’s.
As to this, if a man seeing a therapist fixated constantly on his late father’s faults, wouldn’t the therapist point out that, not only is he living in the past, but that incessantly focusing on another’s flaws can be a way of avoiding having to confront your own?

Leftists haven’t the foggiest idea what our "flaws” are for the simple reason that, being moral relativists/nihilists (not believing in Truth, absolute by definition), they have no standard of perfection to use as a yardstick. And if you have no objective standard of right, you can’t know what’s wrong — not any more than you could identify unhealthful foods without believing in and knowing the rules of human nutrition.

We do have real flaws, today, now, things such as confusion over marriage, sex and the sexes ("transgender” agenda); the mainstreaming of perversion; decadent entertainment; rampant vulgarity; racial demagoguery; profligate spending; leftist propaganda everywhere; and, what lies at the heart of it all, moral relativism. But it’s easier to talk about those dastardly dead white males — they’re not around to defend themselves.

One of the great victories of the Left is that it has woven so many of its suppositions so seamlessly into the culture that even good people accept them, unknowingly, unthinkingly. Thus will we utter, cowed and callow, "Look, I know our country has flaws….”

The irony is that if we could purge so-called leftism from the hearts and minds of Americans, most of our flaws would disappear overnight.
