The CR that was passed by the House on Friday was trimmed down 1,359 pages after a revolt by Conservatives against House Squeeker Mike Johnson. The bill went from 1,547 pages to just 118, despite "Tiny" Johnson's protestations.
The revised bill passed 256 to 34.
Now how hard was that Johnson? Turns out you didn't need all that pork in the bill to get it through. And the Democrats were probably more frightened of a government shutdown than were Republicans; think on that Mike!
At any rate the thirty four Republicans who voted against this did so primarily because they stood with Trump in wanting the debt ceiling eliminated. I don't know why Trump wants this so badly but it's a bad sign. (Well, actually I do; he's going to have to spend a LOT of money when he first takes office to do what he needs to do - close the borders and evict millions of illegal aliens, for instance.) But it's a mistake on his part to get rid of the debt ceiling in that it is the only thing that constrains Congress at this point (though it rarely stops them) and in two years the Democrats will probably be back in charge of the House and possibly the Senate. Unless the Republicans take bold action now and move Trump's agenda (and I doubt they will with Johnson at the helm and I suspect the Democrats will see to it he's re-elected as Speaker) they will follow the normal trend and lose seats - in a House where they hold just a five seat majority.
So eliminating the debt ceiling may be good for now but terrible for later. I don't know why Trump doesn't see that.
Not having read this bill I cannot comment on it, but it IS a bit disturbing the Democrats are not all that unhappy with it. I wonder if something isn't lurking inside of it.
But at least we eliminated much of the pork and Johnson showed his hand yet again. We cannot move forward with a guy like that at the helm.
Johnson spoke of a "sea change" coming; when will that start Mike? The election is over so there was no political fallout to take even if the government shut down, so why wait until the next Congress? His reasoning is faulty to the point where I do not believe what he is saying; he knows he's full of guano.
If you can't take a risk when there is little risk why would you take a risk when the stakes are higher?
The GOP is still a corrupt and feckless institution.

Department of Education Withdraws Rule on Transgender Athletes in School Sports
The rule would have forced schools to accept athletes who feel like the sex of their choice to play in that category. Many districts were putting rules in place to keep the sexes segregated in sports and the DOE wanted to ban such rules.
Why now? Because the Department of Education is facing it's demise under the Trump Presidency. They're scared.
Good; they should be!

Here is a disturbing little story about our government. It seems a Republican House member, one Kay Granger from the great state of Texas, has been awol since July. Nobody even noticed she was gone, it seems, but eventually a local news source started digging and it turns out Granger is in a nursing home for those suffering dementia, being placed there after she was found wandering the streets incoherent.
So for five months we've been without one Republican vote when the House is on a razor thin margin.
Doesn't the fact that nobody seemed to notice her absence suggest our lawmaking body is top-heavy? I mean, if we don't even notice some old gal has disappeared, was she really necessary at all?
There needs to be a law passed that requires House and Senate members to vote. If they miss, say, three votes in a row without a valid excuse they should be suspended and perhaps - at least with the House - a special election held.
This shows our government is shlerotic and not at all concerned with actually doing what they were sent to D.C. to do.
Fortunately Granger did not seek re-election. She is being replaced by Republican Craig Goldman for the Ft. Worth area district.

It's now confirmed by genetic testing; syphillis is an American export to Europe and not something Columbus gave to the Native Americans.
FTA:
"When a mysterious flesh-rotting disease broke out in Europe in 1495, two years after Christopher Columbus returned from the Americas, suspicion fell on his crew.
Syphilis was soon rampant across the Continent and beyond, but its origins continued to be fiercely debated, with some historians claiming it was actually home-grown.
Now, scientists have carried out genetic testing on the bones of infected people from Chile, Peru, Mexico and Argentina, who lived between the 13th and 15th centuries and died before Columbus arrived.
They found that ancestral forms of syphilis were present in the New World before it was discovered by Europeans, suggesting the bacterium did indeed hitch a lift back with the explorers.
"The data clearly support a root in the Americas for syphilis and its known relatives, and their introduction to Europe starting in the late 15th century is most consistent with the data,” said Kirsten Bos, group leader for molecular paleopathology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.
"While indigenous American groups harboured early forms of these diseases, Europeans were instrumental in spreading them around the world.”
End
This has long been suspected by scientists who noted it's similarity to other diseases known in central and south America. But it's been an article of faith that the Europeans introduced it to the Indians because, well, we all know everything they did was evil and so they had to despoil paradise with their filthy lecher's disease.
In it's day syphillis was as dreaded and terrible as AIDS was in the '80's and '90's. There was no cure for it, although on rare occasions people went into permanent remission. But it gets into the nervous system and many of those in remission went insane from it.
Penicillin changed all that because it's a bacteria and is now easily treated (easily enough, anyway).
Now,it is true the Natives suffered from the arrival of Europeans as they were more susceptible to the European diseases. That makes perfect sense in that the Europeans were always coming into contact with other peoples, some from quite far away (like China or subsaharan Africa) and so their immune systems were better at dealing with novel infections. Also, the lack of cross-cultural trade in the Americas (for instance the Aztecs didn't even know of the Incans and vice-versa)which stemmed largely from a lack of proper pack animals and the Indians not inventing the wheel or any sort of ship capable of moving large numbers of people or cargo made the Americas isolated and as a result open to the new infections coming from the old world.
At any rate efforts to research the diseases transmitted to Europe have always failed primarily due to lack of interest by Academia and fear of a backlash by the Left, which has built it's whole worldview on the evils of Western culture.
Tehy are wrong as this shows.

This has to be the year's best article for Cognitive Dissonance and Trump Derangement! The title is a true work of art!
Trump threatens government shutdown unless debt limit demand met, blames Biden if it happens
Apparently the Christmas bonus Congress was giving to itself and the Democrats is kaput due to a rebellion in the ranks over the pork-laden spending spree negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson.
I've got news for the folks at ABC (who just paid out big bucks to Trump for defaming him):
1.Trump is not President and any "theats" he makes at this point are mere words.
2. If Trump "killed the spending bill" how did he do it? He has no vote. He is a private citizen at this point. All he could do is complain about it and ask House members to reject it.A
3. What Trump said was he did not want us to reach and surpass the debt limit. He warned we could slip into a recession if we do - and we shouldnt take the risk.
4. Trump is "putting the blame" on Biden they claim. Huh? He stated quite plainly he was FORCING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO DEAL WITH A FISCAL ISSUE DURING IT'S TENURE and not have it dumped on his incoming Administration. Biden has not and is not showing any sort of leadership here. It is his job, after all, and will be for a number of weeks to come.
5. A furlough of a couple of weeks for non-essential government workers (and if there are 'non essential' workers doesn't that suggest we don't need 'em in the first place?) is actually a nice Christmas gift for them. They will get back pay after the furlough.
5. Trump argues that a shutdown will be the Democrat's fault as they are the ones insisting on higher spending - and Biden will take the heat. He says:
"Shutdowns only inure to the person who's president," Trump said. "That's what I tried to teach [former House Speaker] Kevin McCarthy, but I obviously didn't do a very good job [with] a shutdown because he kept giving them extensions into my territory, a shutdown only hurts or inures to the person who happens to be president."
Well, who is threatening to shut the government down? Not the Republicans who are offering half a loaf anyway. So a shutdown is indeed the fault of the Democrats contrary to what ABC News believes.
BTW ABC isn't the only media outlet twisting a government shutdown to be Trump's fault. Here are a few headlines I found on a Google search:
Ap News - Government funding plan collapses as Trump makes new demands
Reuters - Trump rejects bipartisan US spending bill, raising government shutdown risk
CNN - GOP scraps government funding bill after Trump demands changes
Al Jazeera - Facing government shutdown, Trump and Republican allies scuttle Spending Bill
NBC News - Trump opposes funding bill, pushing government closer to a shutdown
Notice how each of these lays the blame for any shutdown squarely on Trump, and says nothing, nothing, not one blasted thing, about the Democrats unwillingness to compromise with this.
The Democrats are the ones shutting it all down.
More proof the media is hopelessly biased and at the same time gaslights Americans repeatedly.

And down goes Fani...
Fani Willis Disqualified From Trump Election Interference Case
The Georgia Court of Appeals disqualified Willis on Thursday, stating:
"After carefully considering the trial court's findings in its order, we conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office" over what the appeals court called "a significant appearance of impropriety,"
Willis and the Fulton County DA's office vow to appeal the ruling.
While this does not dismiss the case seems possible the removal of Willis will end the matter; it makes this an even great "hail Mary" pass then before. But who knows? No doubt the office is full of partisan hacks like the duaghter of the former Black Pantther and communis revolutionary herself. (Willis' father is John Clifford Floyd IIIormer live-in lover of the Communist revolutionary Angela Davis and former Black Panther revolutionary.)
It may be that anyone taking over for Willis will see the writing on the wall and won't be willing to sacrifice him or herself. Especially with such a weak case. But of course Willis will still be in the same office as these people and will assert undue pressure. She'll still be their boss after all. That is, if it stays in Fulton County. The question of who takes over the case, and whether it continues, will be decided by the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia. Georgia is run by Republicans.
Still, the case is unraveling and I suspect it may wind up being dismissed by a superior judge at some point.
In a way this could be BAD for Trump as Willis has been a terrible prosecutor, pulling all sorts of dirty tricks to get Trump. Maybe the next prosecutor won't be so easily tarred with prosecutorial malfeasance?
Time will tell.
The court did NOT toss out the indictments as the Trump defense team had requested.

Why birthright citizenship is a lot of horsepoop.
The Constitution does not Grant Birthright Citizenship to the Children of Illegal aliens
What the media omits when discussing the 14th amendment is the words "subject to the jurisdiction thereof". You can't pass along citizenship to people who are subject to the jurisdiction of the countries to which they are citizens. Just showing up doesn't do it (nor does it grant that to tourists or foreign diplomats, etc.)
So Trump may well be able to end it by exectuvie order and it may stick if the Supreme Court does it's job (no sure thing with good old John Roberts at the helm and you never know with Coney-Barrett and Neil Gorsuch.
The sponsor of the 14th Amendment, Senator Jacob Howard of Michigan, had this to say about it at the time:
So if we adhere to original intent then birthright citizenship is illegal. Clearly Congress did not intend to use it as a way to award citizenship as a participation trophy.
Howard further explained what he meant by "subject to the jurisdiction":
Which means that you aren't a citizen if you come here while being subject to another nation. Case closed.

Matt Gaetz may get the last laugh after all.
Gaetz was run out of Congress and blacklisted by this own party for accusations made against him that never led to a prosecution. This no doubt happened to Gaetz because he led the charge to remove Kevin Mccarthy as Speaker and then went after Mike Johnson. This is nothing but payback. And, after refusing to release the ethics report on Gaetz the House (under Tiny Johnson) reversed course and now plans on airing the most lurid and dispicable accusations falsely made against the disruptive former Congressman.
Well, if they want a sexual armageddon...
The word is Gaetz may blow the whole stinking thing up. He had access to the information behind the decades-long program in Congress to pay off "bimbo eruptions" and he is threatening to go public with some of these.
Rep. Thomas Massie had floated the idea earlier of taking a page from Alvin Bragg and going after House members based on "hush money" as election tampering. I mean, if it's good enough for the Democrats to use on Trump why not use it on congressmen? But Massie let it drop; it was a bluff with him.
But Gaetz may well drop the big one here, and perhaps with a Trump-appointed AG we'll see prosecutions of RINO and Democrat congressional perverts based on the sword the Democrats handed to Trump.
As ye sow so shall ye reap!
I hate to see it come to this but if someone crosses the rubicon you must as well.
Anyway, I don't know what the report will say, but I suspect it's full of unverified accusations which the media will run with even where the report says it's unverified. It's purely to slime Gaetz to force him out of public life.
Payback is a bitch.

How many woke DEI subjects can you pack into one topic?
Same-sex couples more vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change – Williams Institute
I think these folks are trying to win some sort of prize for DEI stuffing!
It could just as easily be argued that a warming climate helps gay couples. For instance, many gay men are thinner than average and we all know fat is a great insulator (which is why Eskimoes tend to be beefy). So a warming world would favor the stick-thin homosexual.
The very same Williams Institute claims 60% of homosexuals in America live in the South or Midwest where it's warmer.
(BTW, an online survey done by PEW found 7% of the populaion worldwide identified as LGBTQ. Online surveys are worthless; they can be gamed very easily. And given the rather desperate nature of the gay community for acceptance I stronglysuspect we can cut that number in half at least, thus putting it under 4%, yet the way the media portrays it one would think a third of all Mankind is gay.)
I tried to find a correlation between gay and straight numbers based on climate throughout the world and was unable to come up with any correlation; it seems gay is gay. So how does "climate change" affect the LGBTQEIEIO community adversely when warmer weather does not seem to hold them back?
There is no definitive study on the matter and there should be. But I rather suspect MORE homosexuality occurrs in the warrmer climates. Cultures in the tropics seem far less judgmental about the matter than in the temperate zones. Of course that could simply be cultural and tied to Christianity, although Islam is equally intolerant of homosexuality and it comes from hot climates.
So this is just more happy horsepoo.

Mike "Tiny" Johnson is in trouble over his budget-busting CR as Conservative Republicans blasted the pork-laden steaming pile as "business as usual".
This 1,500 page bill had a number of add-ons, including funding for farmers, for rebuilding the F.S. Keys bridge in Baltimore, disaster relief funding, a big pay raise for Congress, a reautthorizaton of the DHS funding for regulating drones, etc. All to keep the government open AFTER an election.
Tom Massey went on record saying he will oppose Johnson's Speakership, for instance.
But of course the Democrats could save Johnson again - as they did in the no-confidence vote prior. And I suspect this is his paying them back for that, giving them what they want now since they kept his sorry posterior in office.
The real problem in our government are the RiNO Republicans. If we had control of the party we would make great strides, but these people (like Johnson) will sell their souls for another two years in power. And they have. Mike Johnson was a rising star among Conservatives; now he's just another in a line of weak and cowardly Speakers, on a par with McCarthy, Ryan, Boehner, Hastert, etc. As soon as these guys get the gavel they morph into Democrats. Personally I suspect they are blackmailed (I know Hastert was; he was paying bribes to a blackmailer to not bring up his pedophilic rape of a young man).
Anyway we need Johnson replaced pronto. He's not going to accomplish anything and will wind up obstructing Trump's agenda.
I have a theory that the top brass in the GOP in Congress don't WANT to win or accomplish anything. They want to keep the numbers very close then use that as an excuse to not take any action. That way they have campaign issues to run on, but don't have to worry about having a record to defend. Even worse I think they want to let the Democrats have their way because deep down they really don't support Conservatism or MAGA but like the big-spending welfare state. Just look at what they didn't do when they took control of both chambers of Congress last time; after years of promising "repeal and replace" Obamacare they did not send a single bill to President Trump to fix it. They did this based on the argument "we can't take something away from the Amrican People" but what did Obama do but take something away from the American People in instituting it? And the whole point was "repeal and replace" not just repeal. Obamacare is grossly unpopular (I know; I have had an ACA plan since it's inception and it's very unpopular with ME!) This was a winner! But especially Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan didn't want Trump to have any legislative victories because it would assure him re-election and they knew it. So they stymied him at every turn over everything. I would argue they actually purposely threw the last three elections prior to '24 because of "the Long Game" as McConnell is so fond of promoting. They figured they could afford to lose control of Congress to get their dirty work done and get rid of tat SOB Trump. So McConnell defunded many MAGA candidates who could win and wasted money on guaranteed losers back east so as to then blame TRUMP for the failures. Ryan was no better.
I remember when Trump was first elected; Rush Limbaugh gave the GOP sound advice "enact Trump's agenda". He argued that by enacting the agenda Mr. Trump won on (despite seemingly overwhelming odds) the GOP would prosper. Sadly Ryan and McConnell also heard that and did the opposite because they wanted to crush MAGA. And thus Trump was then a one-term President.
That appears to be what Tiny is trying to do now. He just promoted a disgraceful waste of taxpayer money ostensibly out of fear of being blamed for a government shutdown. But after Trump's election why would the REPUBLICANS be blamed for a shutdown? And why care; it's four years until the next Presidential and two years until the midterms. The public will have long forgotten this shutdown, and after the new Congress takes charge a more favorable condition - with a Republican Senate and President - will prevail. There was absolutely no reason to blow this huge wad of cash now.
Of course Johnson will blame the tight House numbers. AS usual. As planned. But of course those numbers are so tight because they lost a couple of Republican seats, one of which they simply threw away (in New York with George Santos, a fibber certainly but one they should have let remain until the election.) And don't forget Matt Gaetz, who Kevin McCarthy worked to get tossed out.
Santos was the first House member expelled in 20 years. So what was his terrible crime? He lied about being Jewish. (Funny; I seem to remember a sitting Senator who lied about being Cherokee.) He was also accused of fraud and misuse of campaign funds, but he did nothing worse than any other sitting Congresscritter. The Democrats simply targeted him because he won in "their" district and the GOP let them because of the reasons I mentioned above. Santos was only one of six House members ever expelled from that august body, and he was the only one ever expelled without being convicted of a crime.
(BTW Anyone remember the House Banking Scandal? How was that any worse than what Santos had been doing? Yet nobody was expelled, including John "fly my kite" McCain, who went on to the a thorn in our sides as Senator.)
According to the New People's Republic aka NPR:
The North Shore Leader, a newspaper in Santos' Long Island district, originally raised questions about claims that Santos' made in campaign filings in which he estimated his net worth at roughly $11 million. More extensive allegations were published last December in The New York Times.
Among other lies, the 35-year-old Santos falsely claimed that he had been a volleyball star at Baruch College, that he had worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that he was Jewish — stories he later amended or recanted in a December 2022 interview.
[...]
Then, in May, Santos was indicted on 13 criminal charges including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.
In October, prosecutors added an additional 10 charges in a superseding indictment, following a plea deal by a former campaign finance official affiliated with Santos' campaign.
This bears a striking resemblance to what happened to Donald Trump, does it not? It was clearly a concerted effort to take the man out.
Now, I'm not excusing Santos by any means, but am pointing out that the same methods employed against Trump were used against him, and the GOP led the charge in removing him despite the very narrow margin in the House. They could simply have left it up to the American People or waited for Santos to be charged and convicted. But they chose to kick him out without due process because they are either cowards or duplicitous. I tend to think the latter, at least where leadership is concerned. Everyone knew the Democrats would win Santos' seat.
Here is a database of misconduct by House members over the years. Yet almost all of these people remained in office under the theory that the voters should decide and not their representatives.
Anyway, Johnson has betrayed us yet again and will continue to do so as long as there are no repercussions. He is part of the Deep State whether he admits it or not. He talks a a great game but in the end he's just another Cryin' John" Boehner, who was a staunch conservative until he became Speaker then he became "Go Along to Get Along" Johnnie. Oh, did I mention he and Johnson have become great friends and he's a regular adviser to the current Speaker?
If Trump's popularity lasts until the midterms he should find a way of successfully removing Johnson. Johnson is not his friend - nor ours.

It appears that Trump not only offered the National Guard to the J6 Coffee Klatch and book club meeting but actually ordered it - and his orders were disobeyed by then acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller.
Bombshell; Trump didn't Just Offer the Military to Protect the Capitol He ordered and and was Disobeyed
Trump-hating General Mark Milli (Vanilli) told investigators that Trump said:
"Hey, I don’t care if you use Guard, or soldiers, active-duty soldiers, do whatever you have to do. Just make sure it’s safe.”
And yet Miller didn't obey the order. He told the IG investigator:
Why did Miller disobey orders? He was cowed by an op-ed authored by Dick Cheney and his daughter, and out of a desire to protect his future career prospects:
Get that? He was more concerned with how he was perceived by the media and others than doing what he was supposed to do.
Cowardice, betrayal, and plitics all led to the events of January 6 and it is increasingly clear that Nancy Pelosi engineered much of this, along with Cheney. Heads need to roll.

I just listened to a wonderful Christmas CD - Christmas from the Heart. Done by our northern tier editor Dana Mathewson and his wife and colleagues this beautiful music was quite a treat for the Christmas season and I recommend everyone to get a copy.
A mix of traditional and jazz, with a heavy emphasis on the traditional, this compilation of songs offers an eclectic mix, something for everyone. (Me, I'm a traditionalist where Christmas music is concerned and it has plenty of that, but it has something for everyone.)
Dana does the woodwinds, and his wife Martha does the piano. Both are very well respected professional musicians with extensive experience with the top names in the business.
Singers are Melissa O'Neill and Tom Witry, both of whom have absolutely beautiful voices.
This was a lovely album and I would heartily recommend it to everyone. A lovely treat on this winter's day a week before Christmas!
To learn more about From the Heart or buy this wonderful cd go to https://fthquartet.wixsite.com/fromtheheartartists. They are also available for events if you are in the Twin Cities area.

Oh, by the way, Congress gave itself a nice raise in Tiny Johnson's last minute spending spree.
FTA:
According to the New York Times, individual members could be reimbursed up to about $34,000 in the first year.
Most members of Congress earn $174,000 annually, although some in leadership positions receive higher salaries. The Speaker of the House receives $223,500, while the Senate president pro tempore receives $193,400.
With the provision blocking pay raises stripped, lawmakers will receive an annual adjustment in pay equal to the change in the government’s Employment Cost Index for the fourth quarter of the prior calendar year versus the year before that.
That adjustment will be made each year unless Congress again blocks its pay raise.
