It Depends on the Meaning of Years

From Willis Eschenbach:

The scumballs at the NY Times have totally sold out to the Democrats. Now they are whining about what they repeatedly call "years-old" leaking accusations against James Comey. "Years-old"??? Get real! It was two and a half years ago! See below for the article.

The underhanded part is that they are claiming that because it wasn't investigated by FBI at the time, the prosecution now must be political.

Which makes perfect sense ... until you think to yourself, wait a minute, who was head of the FBI at that time?

Why ... um ... unless I'm wrong, it was James Comey himself.

So their claim is quite simple—the current investigation of James Comey is obviously wrong and politically motivated. We know that because when James Comey allegedly leaked secrets to the media "years ago" way back in 2017, it wasn't immediately investigated at the time by James Comey, and the fact that James Comey didn't find it necessary to investigate James Comey clearly proves James Comey's innocence! You got a problem with that?

I weep for the death of journalism. Comey is a self-admitted leaker and a liar, and the NYT has his back. Despicable.

Folks, if you believe one word those lying pond scum at the NYT have to say, you've been suckered badly.

w.

A note from Tim:

Isn't this the very reason they appointed a special prosecutor for "Russiagate", because they claimed Trump's AG could not be impartial? Now they say James Comey was perfectly capable of investigating himself. The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Failed Global Warming Predictions

This from Willis Eschenbach:

The World Wildlife Fund has warned that due to climate change, Spain will be riddled with malaria, parts of the US coast will have flash floods, and the ski resorts in the Alps will be out of snow by the year ... 2100? 2050?

Nope. By 2020. They made the ludicrous claim in 1999, back when they figured that everyone would have forgotten about it if they were wrong ... but the intarwebs never forgets.

And climate alarmists wonder why people no longer believe them ...

Tourist Spots Could Be Too Hot to Handle

From the 1999 Guardian article:

By 2020, visitors to the Costa del Sol could risk contracting malaria as global warming brings more frequent heatwaves, making the country a suitable habitat for malaria-bearing mosquitoes, while increases in summer temperatures to more than 40C (104F) could make parts of Turkey and Greece no-go areas in July and August.

The report, Climate change and its impacts on tourism, carried out by the University of East Anglia's climatic research unit for WWF, suggests that tour operators and countries which rely on holidaymakers for foreign revenue will need to take account of the changing climate when planning new resorts or upgrading facilities.

Ute Collier, the WWF's head of climate change, warned: "The tourism industry could be faced with huge costs as global warming begins to influence decisions about when and where people are going to go on holiday. We must see real action from government to tackle the problem of global climate change now."

David Viner, the senior research scientist who compiled the study, said: "Areas such as the Mediterranean - a popular destination for British tourists - could become unbearable during the traditional summer holiday season. As temperatures begin to soar, many tourists will stay away."

The tourist industry is not just a potential victim of global warming - it also contributes to the causes of climate change itself.

[...]

Winter tourism will be affected in the Alps and other European skiing destinations from the impact of less snowfall and shorter skiing seasons.

Lower-lying resorts, such as Kitzbuhel in Austria, and areas where commercial skiing operations are already marginal, such as in Scotland, will be particularly hard hit.

The south-east coastline of the US, including parts of Florida, may be threatened by rising sea levels. Important wetlands, such as the everglades, could also be at risk.

Safari holidays in east and southern Africa may also be affected as droughts and changes in temperature alter the distribution of wildlife.

Meanwhile, some islands in the Maldives could disappear as they are submerged by rising sea levels.

It's tricky being world's largest importer of gas, oil and critic, too

Dana Mathewson

To sort of paraphrase the title, it's fun presenting articles by one of the finest writers in the business today. Victor Davis Hanson explains what's schizophrenic about Europe regarding its energy and defense needs as opposed to how it tries to deal with them.

Despite its cool Green parties and ambitious wind and solar agendas, Europe remains by far the world’s largest importer of oil and natural gas.

Oil output in the North Sea and off the coast of Norway is declining, and the European Union is quietly looking for fossil fuel energy anywhere it can find it.

Europe itself is naturally rich in fossil fuels. It likely has more reserves of shale gas than the United States, currently the world’s largest producer of both oil and natural gas. Yet in most European countries, horizontal drilling and fracking to extract gas and oil are either illegal or face so many court challenges and popular protests that they are neither culturally nor economically feasible.

The result is that Europe is almost entirely dependent on Russian, Middle Eastern and African sources of energy.

The American-Iranian standoff in the Middle East, coupled with radical drop-offs in Iranian and Venezuelan oil production, has terrified Europe — and for understandable reasons.

In a logical world, Europeans would retake control of their own destiny. That recalibration would entail beefing up their military power, and their navies in particular.

The European Union has almost no ability to guarantee the delivery of critical oil and gas supplies from the Middle East should Iran close the Strait of Hormuz or harass ships in the Persian Gulf.

Europe’s only maritime security is the NATO fleet — a synonym for the U.S. Navy.

Vladimir Putin’s Russia supplies an estimated 30 percent of Europe’s oil needs. In times of crisis, Putin could exercise de facto control over the European economy.

In other words, Europe refuses to develop its own gas and oil reserves, and won’t fund the necessary military power to ensure that it can safely import energy from problematic or even hostile sources.

It’s no wonder that Europe’s traditional foreign policy reflects these crazy paradoxes.

Energy neediness explains why the EU was so eager to maintain the so-called "Iran deal” with the theocracy in Tehran, and also why it was nervous about the anti-Russia hysteria that arose in the United States after the 2016 election.

Past European distancing from Israel reflected Europe’s fear of alienating Arab oil producers in the Middle East and North Africa.

Europeans are also uneasy about the Trump administration. They see the current U.S. government as nationalist and unpredictable. Americans appear not so ready as in the past to enter the world’s hotspots to ensure unimpeded commercial use of sea and air lanes for the benefit of others.

The result is a sort of European schizophrenia when it comes to America and foreign policy in general. On one hand, the European Union resents its military dependence on Washington, while on the other it prays for its continuance. The EU loudly promotes freedom and democracy abroad, but it is careful to keep ties with oil-exporting Middle Eastern autocracies that are antithetical to every value Europeans promote.

"Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera," to quote the King of Siam in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I." By which I mean, please go here https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/victor-david-hanson-europ-importer-gas-oil to read the rest. Victor Davis Hanson's articles are not be be bypassed or ignored!

And you will learn important lessons to keep in mind when you hear European "allies" complain about President Trump's actions in the Middle East, especially ones which appear to say "OK, guys, we're going to take our stuff and go home now (which to many of us sound like a great idea since we don't need their oil anymore)."

Please note that stuff about Europeans possessing oil reserves but not utilizing it. Remember when we were in the same boat?

FISA Court "Reform" to be Run by Trump Hater and Partisan

Timothy Birdnow

Efforts to reform the FISA Courts have been undertaken - and the Courts have hired a bitter Trump-hating partisan to assist them with the task.

Sharyl Attkinsson dishes:

On Jan. 10, the FISA court posted an ordernaming anti-Trump lawyer David Kris to "assist the court” in assessing the FBI’s response to the court-ordered cleanup of lapses and abuses identified by Department of Justice Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz.

[...]

To some, the appointment of Kris to help with the job is as mysterious as to why the FISA court’s judges failed to flag the FBI abuses on their own.It would seem more important than ever to have an apolitical person, or a balanced group of people, conducting oversight of these politically sensitive matters.Kris’s vocal criticisms of President Donald Trump present numerous, obvious conflicts of interest.

On Twitter, KriscalledRep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) "a politicized, dishonest [Intelligence Community] overseer who attempts to mislead,” and wrote that Trump and his advisers should be "worried” that the "walls are closing in” regarding the Mueller probe. Kris alsobought intothe now-disproven conspiracy theory about Trump colluding with Russia and Putin.

But even more importantly, since that time, Kris has advocated for Trump’s removal.

"Do we want to be a country in which elected officials can use their governmental power to attack political opponents? If not, it’s pretty simple: Trump has to go,” Kris wrote on Twitterin October 2019. Specifically, Kris criticized what he said was Trump using government powers against political opponents, seeming to dismiss the possibility that the government had used its powers improperly against Trump.

In addition, Kriswritesfor the blog "Lawfare” and has called Lawfare’s Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes "incisive.” Wittes is the man whowroteof the need for an "insurance policy” against Trump prior to Trump’s election:

"Our democracy needs a health insurance policy. … The courts have a few obvious advantages, starting with hundreds of independent judges of both parties whom Trump cannot remove from office and who don’t have to face his supporters in forthcoming elections. … The goal … will be to offer a systematic defense of the values the Coalition of All Democratic Forces holds in common and to have the ability to respond rapidly to actions that threaten those values: to forestall such actions in court as long as possible, to whittle them down, and to block those that can be blocked. The goal is to use the courts to render Trump’s antidemocratic instincts as ineffectual as possible.”

Wittes also is a friend of former FBI Director James Comey, who was referred for criminal charges for mishandling and leaking government information in his anti-Trump efforts. (The Justice Department declined to prosecute, with officials stating they didn’t believe Comey meant any harm.)

Regardless, however, America is now faced with a very stark choice: do we want to be a country in which elected officials can use their governmental power to attack political opponents? If not, it’s pretty simple: Trump has to go. 5/5

— David Kris (@DavidKris) October 3, 2019

This is proof that there is no appetite for reform for this hopelessly corrupt star chamber court.

Washington is hopelessly corrupt, and the possibility of reform is slim. Donald Trump took on the Hydra here.

It's Warm because it WAS Cool!

Timothy Birdnow

Roy Spencer knocks another leg out of the Global Warming stool:

1D Model of Global SST Shows 40% of Warming Since 1979 Due to Early Volcanic Cooling

From the article:

In 2017, Christy & McNider published a study where they estimated and removed the volcanic effects from our UAH lower tropospheric (LT) temperature record, finding that 38% of the post-1979 warming trend was due to volcanic cooling early in the record.

https://www.nature.com/articles/367325a0?fbclid=IwAR1RU5VEJ7OR790uHFP7-7RUFh7BRE-fTwvO7xwlSyu6jIFe5opxeo_aoSU

Yesterday in my blog postI showed results from a 1D 2-layer forcing-feedback ocean model of global-average SSTs and deep-ocean temperature variations up through 2019. The model is forced with (1) the RCP6 radiative forcings scenario (mostly increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols and volcanoes) and (2) the observed history of El Nino and La Nina activity as expressed in the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) dataset. The model was optimized with adjustable parameters, with two of the requirements being model agreement with the HadSST global temperature trend during 1979-2019, and with deep-ocean (0-2000m) warming since 1990.

Since the period since 1979 is of such interest, I re-ran the model with the RCP6 volcanic aerosol forcing estimates removed. The results are shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1. 1D model simulation of global (60N-60S) average sea surface temperature departures from assumed energy equilibrium (in 1765), with and without the RCP6 volcanic radiative forcings included.

The results show that 41% of the ocean warming in the model was simply due to the two major volcanoes early in the record. This is in good agreement with the 38% estimate from the Christy & McNider study.

It is interesting to see the "true” warming effects of the 1982-83 and 1991-1993 El Nino episodes, which were masked by the eruptions. The peak model temperatures in those events were only 0.1 C below the record-setting 1997-98 El Nino, and 0.2 C below the 2015-16 El Nino.

Interesting; volcanic cooling early on skewed the record!  And at 41% that knocks out over a third of planetary warming!

Global Warming alarmism has become nothing but a fable.

Greta Glares: Pot is Environmentally Unfriendly

Timothy Birdnow

What would Greta say?

Here is something quite interesting; it seems marijuana growers use vast amounts of electricity in the production of commercial cannabis.

From the Canada Free Press article:

The $344 billion cannabis industryis one of the country’s most energy-intensive in the world, frequently demanding an array of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, fans and 24-hour indoor lighting rigs at multiple growing sites.

Just how much electricity does the entire US marijuana industry consume?

The numbers are mind-boggling.

They’re also the bane of the cannabis industry, according to Joseph Maskell, founder and president of AAXLL, one cannabis company aiming to be a major disrupter of the short-lived status quo.

"The key in this emerging industry is to be asset-light,” says Maskell.

"With billions spent just on electricity in the US cannabis-growing industry, the companies that will survive the next culling, which is already in process, will be those with low capital outlays, no warehouses, no buildings, no machinery.”

Back in 2016, after the state of Oregon legalized recreational marijuana, Pacific Power in Portland recorded seven blackouts that the company traced to marijuana production.

Meanwhile, a good 45% of Denver’s increase in energy demand or "load growth” was directly linked to electricity that went to power marijuana growth.

The electricity consumption of marijuana grow houses is staggering when you compare it to consumption by the average business or residential unit.

In 2014, the NPCCworked out that it takes 4,000 to 6,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy to produce a single kilogram of marijuana product. Electricity costs can represent 20% of the total cost of cannabis production.

Back in 2015, it was estimated that a 5,000-square-foot indoor facility in Boulder County consumed ~41,808 kilowatt-hours per month—or nearly 66x the average consumption by a household in the county. More than two percent of the city’s electricity usage went to marijuana production.

More recent estimates are not very encouraging either, even as more energy professionals enter the marketplace.

Evan Mills, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, says that production of legal marijuana in the US consumes 1% of total electricity, or 41.71 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, at a cost of $6 billion per year.

That’s enough energy to power 3.8 million homes or the entire State of Georgia. Generating that much electricity spews out 15m tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2), or about what three million average cars would produce in a year.

What will Greta say?  Somehow I suspect this story will fly under the radar in the pro-pot mainstream media, and the environmental activists won't worry about the greenhouse gases being emitted to grow their favorite adult plant.

Liberalism is all about balancing sometimes opposing crackpot ideas. You have feminism and transgenderism, two diametrically opposed kookeries.  Feminists are being forced to accept men in drag as their own, a galling thing.  You have opposing minorities, many of whom hate one another. For example, a great many political blacks hate Jews, and blacks and Hispanics both hate each-other. But as the goal is to stick it to the White Man they manage to maintain an uneasy peace, a peace that will shatter if and when they attain their goal.

So now we have Gang Greens and Potheads.

It should be fairly easy to split these groups. We just have to make it a priority. Sadly, too few Conservatives will understand the importance, preferring to talk about taxes or other things only interesting to other conservatives. And many just won't bother.

Virginia Governor to Declare State Emergency to Prevent Lawful Carry at 2A Rally

Dana Mathewson

This Northam dude is asking for trouble. Actually he hasn't yet declared a State of Emergency, but he's reportedly thinking about it.
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here -- this is the War Room!"

-Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, 1964

"Citizens, you can't carry legal firearms here -- this is a Second Amendment rally!"

-Commonwealth of Virginia, 2020

The laugh-out-loud absurdity of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove is now the cry-out-loud reality of Democrat-held Virginia.

Just days before a planned gun-rights protest in the state capitol, Democratic Governor Ralph Northam plans to declare an emergency later today banning all weapons, including firearms, from the Capitol Square. According to NBC4 in Washington, officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the governor is concerned about "credible threats of potential violence and extremism." However, the ominous-sounding report has the unnamed official admitting that "the state does not have intelligence that the groups are planning a specific act of violence." Still, "Northam has grown increasingly concerned about numerous ominous-sounding postings on social media from forces outside Virginia."

Cam Edwards at our sister site Bearing Arms writes that "buried at the bottom of a laundry list of rules for the House," is the new Rule 85. It reads in part:

The House Committee on Rules will establish, by majority vote, a formal policy on the ability of members, staff, guests, and visitors to bring firearms into the those [sic] areas under the legal authority of the House of Delegates including, but not limited to, the Capitol, the House Chamber, and the Pocahontas Building. The Committee may amend the policy, which may or may not include a blanket prohibition, from time to time as appropriate. Copies of the approved policy and any changes or amendments thereof will be provided to every member, full and part-time employee, page, and intern of the Virginia House of Delegates and be posted for the members of the public.

But Edwards -- who will speak at Monday's rally -- also notes that the "House of Delegates doesn’t control the entire state capitol complex, only the House itself, along with House office spaces," and that the Senate has issued no such new rule. That might explain Northam's plan to declare a state of emergency in order to assume wider powers and effectively shut down any carrying of firearms to a peaceful firearms protest.

The irony, it drips.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League is sponsoring the event, and they seem committed to following the letter of the law. Their instructions to protestors include the following:

CARRY: As of this moment, carry is prohibited inside the General Assembly (GA) Building and the Capitol. For this reason we suggest that if you intend to go inside to lobby you should leave your firearm at home, in your hotel room, or out-of-sight in your locked vehicle. DO NOT LEAVE AN UNSECURED GUN IN AN UNLOCKED CAR! There have been multiple firearms stolen out of vehicles lately. DO NOT HANDLE A LOADED FIREARM. VCDL's firearm safety policy at all VCDL-sponsored meetings, events, or gatherings has always been that loaded firearms shall NOT be handled; they will remain holstered or otherwise secured at all times. Don't ask someone to hold your gun while you go in the building. We suggest that if you are lobbying and come unarmed that you travel in groups with a DD...Designated Defender. This person volunteers to stay outside while the others go in and make our voices heard. As an alternative, you can use a fanny pack type holster which can be taken off and handed to your companion for safe keeping while you go into the building. AGAIN, DO NOT TAKE THE FIREARM OUT OF ITS HOLSTER.

This does not sound to me like the work of anyone trying to incite a violent mob. In fact, the instructions also ask members to "Be patient with the Capitol Police on the screenings," because "It was not their idea, but Democrat leadership's idea." Clearly, the VCDL is doing everything in its power to avoid making a scene, which is perfectly in line with their stated mission to advance "the fundamental human right of all Virginians to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment."

Go here https://pjmedia.com/vodkapundit/virginia-governor-to-declare-state-emergency-to-prevent-lawful-carry-at-2a-rally/ to read the rest of the article. Please! It's very important. Second Amendment rights are at stake country-wide if this guy gets away with what he's trying!

Only as Good as Their Word

Timothy Birdnow

The two top managers of the Houston Astros were fired for their role in sign stealing and other cheating

Also, the manager of the Boston Red Sox was the brain behind the Houston scheme when he was with the Astros.

Manager Alex Cora  was sacked for his role in the Astros swindle fest.

I find it interesting he went to Boston, the city always ready to cheat. The New England Patriots have been stealing football games for years, and the Boston Red Sox have a venerable history of dubious play.

I'm glad they were caught, but cheating is something often winked at by the major leagues. It shouldn't be; anyone caught should be expelled from all participation in the sport - including telecaster - and their teams should be punished to such an extent that no front office will dare take the chance.

It reminds me of vote fraud, which is ubiquitous in this country and often laughed at "vote early, vote often" was an old Democratic expression. Vote fraud should be punished by at least twenty years and the party that benefits should be penalized in some fashion. Right now we have people getting a month in jail suspended and they wind up getting a better job at the DNC.

In both instances this strikes at the heart of the issue. Of course, in vote fraud it is a conscious effort to disenfranchise people, to streal their votes. But then too, in sports it upsets betting and is just a nasty thing, not in line with the values of the games. It promotes a lack of confidence in the veracity of the sport.

In the end, such cheating bespeaks of a moral problem in this country. Americans are increasingly willing to cheat or lie to get what they want. A nation is only as good as the word of it's citizenry. If the citizens tolerate such cheating in small things (like sports) how much more will they tolerate in big things (like politics)? In fact, we have already seen how much; just look at the attempt to bring down President Trump with lies and innuendos.

Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach thereunto, the Bible tells us. America is seriously reporached these days...

Ex-Royals Rail Against Faux Racism

Timothy Birdnow

Hew Boy!

Questions of racism linger as Harry, Meghan step back

I was wondering how long it would be before some woke bloke started hollering "racism".

Look, Britain has a lot of black people these days, and they have always had a rather warm hearted feeling towards black folks. What they haven't had was an AMERICAN black woman marrying a pasty British royal.

That is not to say the young couple is being discriminated against by the British People, but it IS to say that the Brits probably aren't thrilled with an American princess.

It used to be you were out if you married a commoner. Prince Charles, the man child in an eternal waiting room for the throne, had to marry Diana Spencer because she was in the royal lineage and could serve as the King's Queen. See, Charles WANTED to marry Camilla Parker Bowels, but he couldn't because she didn't have the right genes. (Granted, he said he wanted to live in her jeans, but that is a homophone) You can't become a royal just by marrying one - or at least you didn't used to be able to do so.

Meghan Markel doesn't like being a princess. It is too demanding, of your time and your life. You have to dress appropriately at all times. You cannot eat garlic or onions or refried beans or anything that would make you flatulent or smelly. You have to behave properly; no nose picking or pulling the underwear out of the crotch of your pants or inappropriate scratching. You have to use stilted, polite, passionless speech.

None of which is apt to suit any American girl, but especially one who was a celebrity in Hollywood.

See, she thought she would be an uber celebrity, not a prisoner of an insane Emily Post. She is just now realizing she is trapped in the Pierrefeu
gulag
.

And there is nothing snootier than a British aristocrat. To quote Alan Rickman's character in the movie Bottle Shock "you think I'm an asshole but I'm not. It's just that I'm British...and you're not." Pretty much sums it up.

So Meghan wants out, and her Harry hubby does too. But what good is just walking away? You lose the taxpayer dollars. You lose the prestige. You lose the pride of a nose stuck well into the air.

So the ex-royals are trying to blame racism to surf the waves of wokeness. When in doubt, get woke! It buys you the kind of celebrity you crave, without all the unpleasant stuffiness.

Harry and Meg are trying to have their cake and eat it too. There is talk about their keeping their titles even while not actually doing their jobs. There is talk about them having a stipend to live on, even though they have abandoned the royal life. And they know the British public isn't on board with more freeloaders, so they have to appear victims. Oh, it isn't THEM, it's those nasty Brexit types who made Meghan feel unwelcome!

It doesn't wash, gang. Of course, Meghan Markel doesn't either (she has people for that), which is why she wants to hang on to her princesshood while living like any other Hollywood hanger-on.

Schiff, Nadler to Head Impeachment Managers

Timothy Birdnow

So, Nancy Pelosi has named both Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadlernas House Mangers for the impeachment proceedings. Why?

Well, for one thing, it will be a lot harder to call either of them as witnesses.

The other Democratic attack dogs managers include Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Sylvia Garcia of Texas, Val Demings of Florida, Jason Crow of Colorado and Zoe Lofgren of California. Interesting; there are no representatives from the Midwest or any other "Red State".

In fact, Pelosi and company are still demanding witnesses - including new ones not heard from during the hearings. But I notice Adam Schiff is not offering to testify, nor is the "whistleblower".

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the Senate should have opened their own investigation while Pelosi piddled around. Stolen the hag's cover.  But Senate Republicans are not known for being smart or proactive.

Nice Work When You Can Get It

Anyone  wonder why Illinois is broke?

From the Belleville News Democrat:

Representatives and senators are paid in 12 equal disbursements on the last working day of each month. Current law allows lawmakers to receive a full salary as long as they hold office at least one day in each pay period.

Comptroller Susana Mendozaproposed prorating legislators’ pay, ensuring they are only paid for only the days they hold office. She also wants to shift their salary schedule to be the same as it is for other state officials and employees — twice monthly.

No wonder these jobs in "public service" are so sought after.
