How to Subvert a Nation

Timothy Birdnow

The Socratic maxim that the recognition of our ignorance is the beginning of wisdom has profound significance for our understanding of society. Most of the advantages of social life, especially in the more advanced forms that we call "civilization" rest on the fact that the individual benefits from more knowledge than he is aware of. It might be said that civilization begins when the individual in the pursuit of his ends can make use of more knowledge than he has himself acquired and when he can transcend the boundaries of his ignorance by profiting from knowledge he does not himself possess.

Friedrich August von Hayek

Amen. I remember back in the '70's when the youth culture became prominent and the push was on to promote the notion that young people knew more than old folks, who were schlerotic and slow thinking. This then turned to the "self-esteem" culture of the eighties, which taught that children needed more self-esteem and promoted it by refusing to correct kids when they were wrong. This stuff has metastasized until now children are puffed up with their own importance and are unwilling to admit they have anything to learn, especially from their elders.

Of course the Left pushed these ideas so as to create a break with the past, and they planned to fill the empty skulls with their own ideas. it's worked by and large too.

Now the young reject the America we knew because they reject anything from the past, and because they think they are wiser than the racist/bigoted/sexist/homophobic old geezers from the past. But they dutifully listen to their teachers and the culture at large which brainwashes them.

This is how you subvert a nation.

1 Today's youngsters can't even operate a dial phone, while their parents and grandparents laugh at them for their ignorance -- or should, at any rate. "Yes, you young whippersnapper, we didn't have computers and things like that when we were young. So we invented them. Tell me, what have YOU invented, that's worth anything?"

4 Indeed, Tim, but one way or another I fear that we are doomed due to the total ignorance of our spawn. You've heard me say that before and doubtless will hear me say that again. My wife has even heard me say it more than once...
