Wither Impeachment?

Timothy Birdnow

Here is exactly what is wrong with the GOP and their complete ineptness at power politics.

Hot Air's Jazz Shaw asks where is the GOP and where are the calls to impeach Joe "Blow" Biden.

Shaw theorizes at the end and sound rather in agreement, that the GOP has to be careful because of Trump; they don't want to legitimatize an impeachment and suggests instead they may want to just keep dribbling this stuff out.

That is profoundly wrong.

The Democrats twice impeached Mr. Trump, and smeared him with multiple investigations over lies, precisely because they knew there would be no retribution, nothing done in reprisal.

IF the GOP fails to impeach Biden then the Democrats see this is a viable option in the future. They think that way.

And what of the rest? It MAY hurt Trump but probably not. More likely it will disgust the public who will see parity between the two. NOT impeaching Biden puts him on a higher moral plane than Mr. Trump. He will appear clean and the GOP will appear to be just going after Biden on dubious claims they know to be false, or have so little confidence in they don't want to bring charges. It will appear to the public as an admission of weakness. You  have to act on this stuff.

And if the Biden Administration can be shown to be so corrupt it will suggest to the public that Donald Trump is merely being persecuted.

But you get nothing if you do nothing. Biden looks clean. By comparison then Trump looks dirty. The Democrats see they can get away with this. Prosecutors see they can just use lawfare to ruin Republicans.

And the media will continue to put a lid on this and it will just be background noise. Only an impeachment will work; that cannot be ignored by the media, nor can Biden just sidestep it.

The time for half-measures and overthinking this stuff is over. We need resolute action.

This sort of tip-toeing is vintage RINO Republicanism. All it will do is cost the GOP, more seats, more money, and probably the Presidency.

The rules of engagement are set by the aggressor. The Democrats have been the aggressor. It is the job of Congressional Republicans to learn to play by those rules. They seem utterly unwilling to learn to fight as dirty as the Democrats.

Being the bigger man is what every cowering child with a baby tooth knocked out and his lunch money stolen has tried and failed to do. It's the fast way to get your head stove in.

I cannot believe the GOP is still that naive. They must know the stupidity of refusing to respond in kind. Shoot; even if Biden were pure as the wind driven snow I'd advocate he be impeached. Tit for tat must be th rule. I know, Gandi said an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth makes the whole world blind and toothless. But not following that precept leads one bully with two good eyes, a mouth full of teeth, and the other fellow blind in both eyes and toothless, plus broke as the bully will now have his bank roll.

The GOP acts as nothing but a foil, the Wiley Coyote to the Democrat Road Runner. They exist to lose, and they play that part quite well. But that is not what WE elected them to do. WE want them to win, for US. They have other plans. They like losing because the bully lets them keep some of their lunch money. Or worse. Actually the bully has taken the GOP on as the toadie, the weak kid who basks in the glory of the fear of the bully. They get their cut, if less. And that is satisfactory to them.

But it isn't to us. If the GOP refuses to impeach Joe Biden they will lose us to a third party. I know I'll join one.

And who cares if Kamala winds up President? She is a political disaster, and even if not she is no worse a manager and administrator than Joe Biden, who showed himself totally incompetent repeatedly.

No, we want Biden impeached, even if the impeachment fails. It is the only way to turn the tide. Otherwise all we do is fight defense. We've got to stop defending and start attacking.

1 Oh, Timothy. You go on at length about how impeaching Trump made the Democrats look corrupt, stupid, and treacherous, and then you say it would be a mistake for Republicans NOT to impeach Biden. Try to think with the left side of your brain my friend. That's the side that uses logic. Leave the right side, with all of its emotion and fantasy, to the Democrats.

2 No Bill; the Democrats didn't just LOOK corrupt, they showed they were by twice impeaching Trump with what were clearly  bogus charges. And endlessly investigated a political attack by Hillary Clinton as if it were true, besmirching Trump's name. There was no there there.

What I am calling for is impeaching Joe Biden for cause. If they fail to do so the GOP will be the ones who look corrupt. They will let a crime go unpunished. They will appear weak and vacillating and lacking the courage of their convictions.

And the Democrats must know that they cannot get away with such things.

We used that strategy in the Cold War all the time.

Perhaps YOU should think with the left side of your brain. I do not know why you had to get nasty here but obviously understanding what was written and logic are not your strong suits.

You read into my statements. I laid out a series of arguments about why the GOP should do this and you simply dismissed them all.

If you don't think the GOP should impeach Biden then give solid reasons and rebut what I actually said; don't just sneer. It's unbecoming.

3 Because, Tim, no matter what the facts are, the public will not believe them. A majority believe that Trump was guilty. A majority believe that the election was NOT rigged. And a majority will believe that Biden is being unfairly attacked. Elections cannot be won by spouting dirt on the other guy. Elections have to be won by offering something better.

4 First Bill, who says a "majority" believe? I have posted here about how Trump's poll numbers are doing against Biden, and I have also posted a little noticed report showing over a million people switched to the GOP after 2022. The media and liberal polling is telling us things to make us adopt the very defeatist attitude you are displaying here, that we can't win because everyone thinks Trump is guilty and they all hate him. It seems fairly clear this isn't the case - especially since they continue to go after him. IF it were true they would just let Trump alone to be the nominee so the GOP would get creamed.

Second, this would be about Joe Biden - not Donald Trump. Even if what you say is true it does not automatically mean the public loved Joe Biden and wouldn't listen to an impeachment.

What do you suggest? I suppose just doing nothing and hoping it all happily works out? The Karl Rover strategy? We've seen that fail time after time with the GOP and still so many on our side want to do that.

IF we have the information and it is credible - and since we actually do have people who have direct knowledge of what Biden did and are working up the paper trail as we speak - then the public will not gain sympathy for Biden. Especially since he's wrecked the economy and made America a laughingstock.

But if we do nothing nothing will happen. The media puts constant pressure on our side and they protect Biden (or any Democrat) so if nothing comes from our guys nothing will happen. You know that.

We have no choice here. It's either impeach or let Biden simply walk away from it. And if we do that they will continue to take liberties with the Constitution. They will keep going after Trump, for instance, and anyone else who opposes them.

This is basic power politics. Read Macchiavelli. Read Sun Tzu. They have.

We need to be getting our own politicized prosecutors and going after theirs. If we fail to respond they will up the ante.

And the Big Guy is the top target at this point and should be. They made our big guy their target. If we fail to respond in kind all it will do is embolden them.

Why did the politics of personal destruction ramp up in the first place? Bill you remember the Nixon era. When the Democrats pursued Richard Nixon as they did the GOP did nothing, or worse were on their side. It was the way things used to work. But the Nixon investigation taught a basic principle to young Democrats and the media; they could drive Republicans out with baseless accusations of scandal or minor scandal. The failure of the GOP to back Nixon led to the endless investigations of Reagan (you do remember Iran Contra, for instance) and the destruction of Robert Bork. It led to the attacks on Clarence Thomas and eventually to Brett Kavanaugh. It led to special counsels investigating Bush and Chaney over Valerie Plame, a phoney scandal if there ever was one. It has led to multiple fake investigations against all sorts of Republican legislators, like Ted Stevens in Alaska, causing the Democrats to steal seats. And it is why they felt confident they could do this to Trump without reprisal. There never has been any.

So you think there shouldn't be any now. I can't fathom that. If we don't start taking action they will take everything away. The radicalization of America didn't just happen. It happened because good men on our side did nothing. The Karl Rover approach.

5 You don't beat your opponent by becoming indistinguishable from your opponent. You don't win a war by doing exactly what your enemy does. You have to be visibly different. The Republican Party is barely distinguishable from the Democrats now. What do we stand for? The fact is we don't stand for anything other than hating Democrats. Impeachment merely adds to that, based on facts or not. We need to stand for something rather than merely being against Democrats.

6 Bill you would continue to fight using the same tactics that have seen us lose and lose. This isn't a game; these people are not just in disagreement with us. This is a true war and it's for our very survival. Being "visibly different" is fine and dandy but losing the war means we get that anyway.

The aggressor sets the rules of engagement. We didn't choose this fight, nor did we choose the terms of it, nor the place and time. It has been thrust upon us.

How did our military tactics differ from that of Germany in WWII? NOT our social and cultural issues but our military tactics. A little but not by that much. We didn't win WWII by sending in groups of Mennonites preaching pacifism. We won it by fighting with the same weapons and using many of the same strategies that Germany used. Germany set the rules of engagement - we finished it using THEIR rules.

It sounds nice to fantasize about  a world where we don't have to fight in this fashion, but they did it and unless we fight back in kind they will win. As I said this is not a game. Our future, our way of life, our freedom depends on this.

You do realize Bill that the Colonists fought the British oftentimes using tactics considered out of bounds for the day. We used gueeilla warfare. We hid behind trees and sniped at them. We targeted officers. We did all that because it was the only way we had a chance against the British, the best military on Earth.

And we won because we were not too squimish to get our hands dirtied. The Brits called us cowards and cheaters but who wound up gaining independence? I would add the British had their greatest successes when they tried to copy our tactics. And we had our worst loses when we fought in a standard military matchup with them.

You want to hold to some idea of honor that says it is better to lose but retain your dignity. I say there is no dignity in defeat, especially by such a wretched and vile bunch. This is about survival.

I imagine the Tsar's supporters were proud of themselves for losing to the Revolutionaries with dignity too. Served them well until they got their heads cut off.

Again I ask; what would YOUR appraoch be? If you have some brilliant new approach that will snatch victory from the jaws of defeat I'd like to hear it. But I rather doubt you do; you seem to be promoting the same tired Republican idea of being the bigger man here. As I have already said, the bigger man in the school yard is the kid without teeth or lunch money.

I agree we need to stand for something different than the Democrats (and that is STAND FOR, not necessarily use different weapons) and that is exactly what Trump and MAGA was about. We have a uniparty; two ships sailing in the same direction. The main difference is the Democrats want to go faster and a bit farther. But the GOP wants what they want too. The GOP wants open borders. The GOP wants huge amounts of spending. The GOP wants economic interdependence with the world. The GOP wants to empower international institutions and maintain entangling alliances that we fund. The GOP wants wars all over the globe to profit the corporations. The GOP wants this tribal politics. The Democrats want all these things too. Theyare just more eager.

It is THERE that we should set ourselves apart. I do not understand why you complain about methods here. You see what they've done to Donald Trump. That never would have happened had the GOP struck back when the Democrats did this to Nixon, to Reagan, to Bush, to so many of their appointees. If we return to a policy of reprisals we can restore the balance. Everyone will know this is outside of the rules. But the Democrats no longer care about the rules because the GOP refused to enforce them. They cared more about looking statesmanlike than protecting themselves. And that is why we have so much vote fraud (and the Democrats have been able to steal both the Presidency and Congress.)

I am not suggesting we simpoly toss mud either Bill, or make stuff up. I am saying there is ample material to work with and we need to get off our butts and use it. I have no doubt that these prosecutors who are currently pursuing Trump have skeletons in their closets that can be unearthed. We should be unearthing them - and our own prosecutors should be looking into charges. We didn't weaponize the law - they did. But by God  we need to finish it. Just as we finished it in Germany and Japan.

Your suggestion seems to be going back to what got us here in the first place. Good luck with that.
