Jupiter and Tidal Pumping

Richard Cronin

Jupiter’s moons are telling us more every day regarding the heating effects of Tidal Pumping. The gigantic gravity field of Jupiter racks and pushes the subsurface oceans of moons like Io and Europa into extensive volcanic activity. Now we are finding out that moon-to-moon interactions also exert Tidal Pumping and the moons heat one another.

What is so hard about understanding that the Sun’s Tidal Pumping forces heat the Earth ?

Tim adds:

Don't forget Jupiter also tugs on the Earth. In fact the Big Guy is the dominant planet in the solar system, influencing the orbits of every planet. So the Earth gets tidal pumping from the Sun, but also from Jupiter and to a lesser degree Saturn. The geometry is critical to how this plays out. BTW Richard Pluto has a watery interior thanks to fissionables inside the planet. If that cold and distant body is warm enough for liquid water (and it gives the planet a gaseous atmosphere) then why isn't the same happening on Earth (as you often discuss)?
