Crazy Conspiracy Theories

Timothy Birdnow

Here is a discussion between John Lees and myself about conspiracy theories - and theorists.

John observes:

How frustrating it is, to live in the modern age, when everything must involve a vast conspiracy and require elaborate and complex advanced technologies.
We no longer need Occam's Razor. We've now got Occam's laser hair removal. But, operated via satellite, by the CIA, using "alien technology".

I reply:

Conspiracies are all around us all the time. They do exist. Most are essentially harmless, like the conspiracy between Standard Oil, Firestone Tire, and GM to kill streetcars. Others are more malevalent. I believe there are some big ones - and they center on groups like the World Economic Forum, But what is happening, and has been for some time, is that these very groups actually promote all sorts of conspiracy theories, many quite silly, to hide in plain sight. When peopple talke about space aliens or Bigfoot or whatnot they aren't talking about the rising socialism of the Western World. BTW John, do you really need a laser? You can find an old tube t.v. and cut the lense in front off then start the fire with sunlight...

John responds:

This is precisely my conclusion. I don't doubt that some/many conspiracies are sown into culture as a form of subversion. Personally I would not be surprised if, in 50 years, people learn that the CIA was behind the Q-Anon cult.
That would not surprise me at all.
It also wouldn't surprise me if it was run from a troll farm in Ukraine. We probably will not find out in our lifetimes, sadly.

Me again:

I think so too. I suspect Qanon is indeed a crazy conspiracy theorist set up to embarass those who actually see what is happening. Then the "reasonable" people will say "crazy conspiracy theorists" when there is nothing crazy about certain things. We know, for instance, there was in fact a government plot against Donald Trump. But if you said that then you were accused of being a kook who reads Q-Anon. It was a clever strategy. Then everyone laughs at a person pointing out a real conspiracy (like the FBI set Trump up with the fake dossier.) Yeah; I wonder what was happening in Ukraine. Certainly Hillary Clinton had ties to the country, as did the Bidens. No, we probably will never know.

Timothy Birdnow I'm almost certain that it was something along those lines.

This from John:

What is most notable about the Q-Anon phenomenon, is that normally the approach would be to take the pool of existing Trump supporters, find the lunatics, then plant even more ludicrous ideas into the heads of those people, then induce those people to act in ways that discredits Trump supporters in general.
However, with Q-Anon we see in interesting phenomenon whereby in many instances Q-Anon seems to have induced non-Trump supporter lunatics to become allied with the Trump base. Many of them dope-addled hippie types who had been seduced online by pizzagate garbage.
Moonlanding deniers and their associated fruitloops.

Tim rplies:

John Lees - yeah; I've noticed that too. I suspect it means there were not enough Trump supporters who were, well, stupid enough to fall for the trick so they had to import crazies from outside. They need to associate Trump with the lunatic fringe. But the lunatic fringe has generally been Democratic. As you say, dope-smoking hippies and paranoid minorities and womyns study types and the like. So they got these people to make common cause via Q-Anon with Trump supporters (who actually have a strong case) and thus deligitimizes the MAGA and at the same time infiltrates Leftists into the Trump camp. That way they can get people who will committ violence or who will otherwise prove to be embarassing to appear as the "base".

You may remember Jason Kessler, and the "Unite the Right" rally that ended in a riot in Charlottesville. He had been a devout Obama supporter and an "Occupy Wall Street" guy before turning "MAGA".
